Existential sentences

B1 存现句 35 / 56

In short

An existential sentence puts a place first, then a verb, then a brand-new, indefinite thing: 墙上挂着一幅画 (qiáng shàng guà zhe yī fú huà, there’s a painting hanging on the wall). It is how Chinese says “there is / appears / vanishes X at a place.” The verb carries 着 for a static state or 了 for something appearing or leaving, and the final noun is always new information - 一 + measure word, never 这/那.

The rule

An existential sentence (存现句) reverses ordinary word order to present something. Instead of “the thing + is somewhere,” you say “the place + shows + a thing.” The whole schema is:

Place + Verb + 着 / 了 + (Number + Measure) indefinite Noun

Step 1 - Lead with the place, bare. The location itself is the subject, so it needs no 在 in front of it: 门口 (ménkǒu, the doorway), 桌子上 (zhuōzi shàng, on the table), 前面 (qiánmiàn, up ahead). Give an object noun a localizer (上, 里, 下) to make it a place. (A time word - 昨天, yesterday - can lead the same way, but the core case is a place.)

Step 2 - Mark the verb for its job. There are three flavours:

  • Existence (存在) - something simply sits there in some posture or arrangement. Use Verb + 着: 床上躺着一个孩子 (chuáng shàng tǎng zhe yī ge háizi, a child is lying on the bed). Typical verbs are placement/posture verbs: 放 (fàng, be placed), 挂 (guà, hang), 站 (zhàn, stand), 坐 (zuò, sit), 停 (tíng, be parked), 写 (xiě, be written).
  • Appearance (出现) - something comes into the scene. Use Verb + 了, often with a directional 来/去: 前面来了一个人 (qiánmiàn lái le yī ge rén, someone came up ahead).
  • Disappearance (消失) - something leaves the scene. Also Verb + 了: 家里死了一只猫 (jiā lǐ sǐ le yī zhī māo, a cat died at home).

Step 3 - End with a NEW, indefinite noun. This is the point of the whole construction: it introduces something the listener does not yet know. So the final noun takes 一 + measure word (or 几, 很多, a bare number) - and never 这/那 or a name. If the thing is already known, you must not use an existential sentence; flip to Thing + Verb + 在 + Place instead (那幅画挂在墙上, nà fú huà guà zài qiáng shàng, that painting hangs on the wall).

Existential sentences are presentational and almost always affirmative. To say something is not there, use plain 没有 existence (墙上没有画), covered in 有 and 在.

Forms & patterns

The three types of 存现句:

TypeMeaningPatternExample
Existence 存在a thing sits therePlace + V + 着 + indef. Noun墙上挂着一幅画 (qiáng shàng guà zhe yī fú huà) - a painting hangs on the wall
Appearance 出现a thing comes inPlace + V + 了 + indef. Noun前面来了一个人 (qiánmiàn lái le yī ge rén) - someone came up ahead
Disappearance 消失a thing goes awayPlace + V + 了 + indef. Noun村里搬走了两户人家 (cūn lǐ bān zǒu le liǎng hù rénjiā) - two households moved out of the village

Existential order vs ordinary location order - the same scene, opposite jobs:

Existential (presents new)Location (locates known)
Subject isthe placethe thing
The noun isindefinite (一 + measure)definite (这/那 / a name)
OrderPlace + V着/了 + ThingThing + V + 在 + Place
Example门口停着一辆车 (ménkǒu tíng zhe yī liàng chē)那辆车停在门口 (nà liàng chē tíng zài ménkǒu)
English”there’s a car parked at the gate""that car is parked at the gate”

Common existence verbs (posture / placement) that take 着:

(In 一幅画, 一辆车 etc. the number 一 is written yī in citation but pronounced yì before a 1st/2nd/3rd-tone measure and yí before a 4th-tone one - see Tone sandhi (reading & pronunciation guide).)

Examples

  • 墙上挂着一幅画。 (Qiáng shàng guà zhe yī fú huà.) - There’s a painting hanging on the wall.
  • 桌子上放着一台电脑。 (Zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe yī tái diànnǎo.) - There’s a computer sitting on the table.
  • 床上躺着一个孩子。 (Chuáng shàng tǎng zhe yī ge háizi.) - A child is lying on the bed.
  • 教室里坐着很多学生。 (Jiàoshì lǐ zuò zhe hěn duō xuésheng.) - There are a lot of students sitting in the classroom.
  • 门口停着一辆汽车。 (Ménkǒu tíng zhe yī liàng qìchē.) - A car is parked at the doorway.
  • 前面来了一个人。 (Qiánmiàn lái le yī ge rén.) - Someone came up ahead.
  • 我们班转来了一个新同学。 (Wǒmen bān zhuǎn lái le yī ge xīn tóngxué.) - A new classmate transferred into our class.
  • 家里死了一只猫。 (Jiā lǐ sǐ le yī zhī māo.) - A cat died at home.

Common mistakes

  • 墙上挂着这幅画。 -> 墙上挂着一幅画。 (Qiáng shàng guà zhe yī fú huà.) - The presented noun must be indefinite (一 + measure); a 这/那 noun is already known, so use 那幅画挂在墙上 instead.
  • 前面来一个人。 -> 前面来了一个人。 (Qiánmiàn lái le yī ge rén.) - Appearance and disappearance verbs need 了 to mark the thing entering or leaving the scene.
  • 在门口停着一辆车。 -> 门口停着一辆车。 (Ménkǒu tíng zhe yī liàng chē.) - The place is the subject itself; do not put 在 in front of it in an existential sentence.
  • 门口站着他。 -> 他站在门口。 (Tā zhàn zài ménkǒu.) - A definite noun (他, 那个人) cannot be the introduced item; flip to Thing + V + 在 + Place.
  • 桌子上有放着一本书。 -> 桌子上放着一本书。 (Zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe yī běn shū.) - Do not stack 有 onto the existential verb; 放着 already does the “there is” job.

Tips

  • One clean split: 着 = a still photo of something resting in place (存在); 了 = the moment something enters or leaves the frame (出现 / 消失). Pick the marker that matches whether the scene is frozen or changing.
  • The end-noun is always new - that is the whole reason 存现句 exists. If you catch yourself wanting to end with 他, 我的书, or 那辆车, the thing is already known: switch to Thing + 在 + Place and drop the existential order.
  • These sentences are the workhorse of description and narration. Openers like 屋里坐着几个人 (wū lǐ zuò zhe jǐ ge rén, a few people were sitting in the room) set a scene by panning from the place to what fills it - very common at the start of a story or a paragraph.
  • Do not confuse this with plain 有 existence. 桌子上有一本书 just states a book exists there; 桌子上放着一本书 adds how it sits (lying flat, placed). Existential verbs paint the posture; 有 only reports presence.
