有 and 在 (existence and location)

A1 「有」字句与「在」字句 9 / 56

In short

有 (yǒu) means “to have” and “there is/are”: Possessor + 有 + Thing (我有书, I have books) or Place + 有 + Thing (桌子上有书, there are books on the table). 在 (zài) is the verb “to be located at”: Thing + 在 + Place (他在家, he’s at home). Same scene, opposite order: 桌子上有书 introduces new books; 书在桌子上 tells you where known books are.

The rule

Two everyday verbs cover this whole lesson: 有 (yǒu) and 在 (zài).

有 (yǒu) has two jobs.

  • Possession - Possessor + 有 + Thing. The subject is a person (or group) who owns something: 我有一辆车 (Wǒ yǒu yí liàng chē) = I have a car.
  • Existence - Place + 有 + Thing. The subject is a place, and 有 means “there is / there are”: 桌子上有一本书 (Zhuōzi shàng yǒu yì běn shū) = There’s a book on the table. The thing that 有 introduces is new, indefinite information (a book, some people, a number of things) - so it takes 一/a number or an indefinite quantity (很多, 一些, 几 + measure, 一点), never 这/那.

有 is never negated with 不. Its negation is 没(有), covered in Lesson 10.

在 (zài) is the location verb “to be (located) at / in”.

  • Thing + 在 + Place. The subject is a specific, already-known thing, and 在 tells you where it is: 他在家 (Tā zài jiā) = He’s at home; 书在桌子上 (Shū zài zhuōzi shàng) = The book is on the table.

Place words. Both existence-有 and 在 need a genuine place expression after them. Proper places, 家 / 这儿 / 那儿, and any noun that already names a place or a position - 学校, 公司, 教室, 楼上, 门口, 三楼 - work as they are (在北京, 在家, 在公司, 在楼下), and there a localizer is optional rather than required (在教室 = 在教室里). But an ordinary object noun is not a place by itself - add a localizer such as 上 (shàng, on top) or 里 (lǐ, inside): 桌子上 (on the table), 包里 (in the bag), 房间里 (in the room). Bare 在桌子 is wrong; say 在桌子上.

Choosing 有 or 在 (the heart of the lesson).

  • Step 1 - decide what is known. Are you introducing something new (“there’s a …”)? Or locating something already known (”… is at …”)?
  • Step 2 - order it. New thing at a place -> Place + 有 + Thing. Known thing’s location -> Thing + 在 + Place.

The very same fact flips both subject and verb:

房间里有一台电视。 (there’s a TV in the room - introduces the TV) 电视在房间里。 (the TV is in the room - locates the known TV)

Forms & patterns

The three core patterns:

UsePatternExampleGloss
PossessionPossessor + 有 + Thing我有两个妹妹 (Wǒ yǒu liǎng ge mèimei)I have two younger sisters
ExistencePlace + 有 + Thing桌子上有一杯茶 (Zhuōzi shàng yǒu yì bēi chá)there’s a cup of tea on the table
LocationThing + 在 + Place茶在桌子上 (Chá zài zhuōzi shàng)the tea is on the table

有 (existence) vs 在 (location) side by side:

有 (existence)在 (location)
Subject isthe placethe thing
It tells youthat a new thing is therewhere a known thing is
The thing isindefinite (“a / some”)definite (“the”)
English”there is / are …""… is at / in …”
OrderPlace + 有 + ThingThing + 在 + Place
Example家里有人 (jiā lǐ yǒu rén) - someone’s home人在家 (rén zài jiā) - the person is home

Localizers - just enough to turn an object noun into a place:

LocalizerPinyinMeaningExample
上shàngon / on top of桌子上 (zhuōzi shàng) - on the table
里lǐin / inside房间里 (fángjiān lǐ) - in the room
下xiàunder / below床下 (chuáng xià) - under the bed

Examples

  • 我有一个哥哥。 (Wǒ yǒu yí ge gēge.) - I have an older brother.
  • 他们有很多朋友。 (Tāmen yǒu hěn duō péngyou.) - They have a lot of friends.
  • 桌子上有一本词典。 (Zhuōzi shàng yǒu yì běn cídiǎn.) - There’s a dictionary on the table.
  • 教室里有很多学生。 (Jiàoshì lǐ yǒu hěn duō xuésheng.) - There are a lot of students in the classroom.
  • 我家附近有一个超市。 (Wǒ jiā fùjìn yǒu yí ge chāoshì.) - There’s a supermarket near my home.
  • 老师在教室里。 (Lǎoshī zài jiàoshì lǐ.) - The teacher is in the classroom.
  • 你的手机在桌子上。 (Nǐ de shǒujī zài zhuōzi shàng.) - Your phone is on the table.
  • 我们下午在家。 (Wǒmen xiàwǔ zài jiā.) - We’re home in the afternoon.
  • 妈妈不在家。 (Māma bú zài jiā.) - Mom isn’t home.

Common mistakes

  • 桌子上在一本书。 -> 桌子上有一本书。 (Zhuōzi shàng yǒu yì běn shū.) - “there is X at a place” uses 有 (Place + 有 + Thing), not 在.
  • 书有桌子上。 -> 书在桌子上。 (Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.) - to say where a known thing is, the thing leads and you use 在; 有 would reverse subject and object.
  • 书在桌子。 -> 书在桌子上。 (Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.) - a plain object noun isn’t a place; add a localizer (上 / 里 / 下) after it.
  • 我是两个孩子。 -> 我有两个孩子。 (Wǒ yǒu liǎng ge háizi.) - “to have / possess” is 有; 是 (to be) can’t express possession.
  • 我不有时间。 -> 我没有时间。 (Wǒ méiyǒu shíjiān.) - 有 is negated with 没, never 不; the full rules are in Lesson 10.

Tips

  • Quick decision: introducing something new -> Place + 有 (“there is”); locating something known -> Thing + 在 (“it’s at”). The subject and the verb flip together.
  • Rough shortcut: 有 pairs with “a / some”, 在 pairs with “the”. You say 桌子上有一本书 (a book), but for the known one you say 那本书在桌子上 (that book is on the table), not 有.
  • Don’t confuse this 在 (main verb, followed by a place) with the 在 that marks an ongoing action and is followed by a verb (在看书, “is reading”). That different job is covered in Lesson 21.
  • Negation preview: 有 -> 没有 (never 不有); 在 -> 不在 (不在家, “not home”). Note 不 becomes bú before 在 (bú zài). Full treatment in Lesson 10.
