Ongoing actions and states (在/正在 and 着)
A2 进行体「在、正在」与持续体「着」 21 / 56
In short
To say an action is happening right now, put 在 (zài) - or the more explicit 正在 (zhèngzài) - before the verb, often with 呢 (ne) at the end: 他在吃饭呢 (tā zài chī fàn ne, he’s eating). To say a state is simply holding - a door standing open, a person seated - put 着 (zhe) right after the verb: 门开着 (mén kāi zhe, the door is open). One is a moving action; the other is a frozen state.
The rule
Mandarin has no tense, so “is doing” and “is in a state” are marked by two different aspect words, and they sit in two different places.
Step 1 - Action in progress: 在 / 正在 + Verb. Put the marker before the verb:
Subject + 在 / 正在 + Verb (+ Object) (+ 呢)
- 在 (zài) is the everyday default: 我在看电视 (wǒ zài kàn diànshì, I’m watching TV).
- 正在 (zhèngzài) is more explicit - “right now, in the middle of it”: 他正在打电话 (tā zhèngzài dǎ diànhuà, he’s on the phone right now).
- 正 (zhèng) alone highlights a coincidence and usually leans on a final 呢: 我正想给你打电话呢 (wǒ zhèng xiǎng gěi nǐ dǎ diànhuà ne, I was just about to call you).
- The sentence-final 呢 softens the whole thing into “-ing” and can even carry the progressive by itself: 你干嘛呢? (nǐ gànmá ne?, what are you up to?).
Do not add 是 and do not conjugate: the marker attaches straight to the plain verb.
Step 2 - State that persists: Verb + 着. Put 着 (a toneless particle, zhe) directly after the verb. It says the state produced by the verb is still holding:
Verb + 着 (+ Object)
门开着 (mén kāi zhe) = the door stands open; 他站着 (tā zhàn zhe) = he is standing; 他穿着一件红衬衫 (tā chuān zhe yī jiàn hóng chènshān, he’s wearing a red shirt). This is a snapshot, not a motion.
Step 3 - 着 also links a manner to a main verb: V1 着 + V2. The first verb describes how the second is done:
Verb1 + 着 + Verb2 = do V2 while / by V1-ing
他笑着说 (tā xiào zhe shuō, he said with a smile), 站着看书 (zhàn zhe kàn shū, read standing up).
Step 4 - 着 in existential sentences: Place + Verb 着 + Thing. A location + V着 presents something as sitting there: 桌子上放着一本书 (zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe yī běn shū, there’s a book lying on the table).
Step 5 - Negate with 没(有), not 不. An ongoing action or a holding state is negated with 没: 他没在睡觉 (tā méi zài shuìjiào, he isn’t sleeping), 门没开着 (mén méi kāi zhe, the door isn’t open). Using 不 here is wrong - 不在 reads as “isn’t present / isn’t here.”
Forms & patterns
Progressive markers, weakest to most explicit:
| Marker | Position | Example | Nuance |
|---|---|---|---|
| …呢 | clause-final | 他吃饭呢 (tā chī fàn ne) | casual “-ing,” from context |
| 在 | before verb | 他在吃饭 (tā zài chī fàn) | everyday “is doing” |
| 正在 | before verb | 他正在吃饭 (tā zhèngzài chī fàn) | “right now, mid-action” |
| 正…呢 | before verb + final 呢 | 他正吃饭呢 (tā zhèng chī fàn ne) | “just at this moment” |
The core contrast - 在 (moving action) vs 着 (frozen state):
| 在 + Verb | Verb + 着 | |
|---|---|---|
| Signals | an action in progress (dynamic) | a state that persists (static) |
| Answers | ”what is X doing?" | "what does X look like?” |
| 穿 (wear) | 他在穿衣服 (tā zài chuān yīfu) - putting clothes on | 他穿着衣服 (tā chuān zhe yīfu) - has clothes on |
| 开 (open) | 他在开门 (tā zài kāi mén) - opening the door | 门开着 (mén kāi zhe) - the door stands open |
The three jobs of 着:
| Use | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Persisting state | Verb + 着 | 门关着 (mén guān zhe) - the door is shut |
| Accompanying manner | V1 + 着 + V2 | 他躺着看书 (tā tǎng zhe kàn shū) - reads lying down |
| Existential | Place + V着 + Thing | 墙上挂着一幅画 (qiáng shàng guà zhe yī fú huà) - a picture hangs on the wall |
(In 一本书 and 一幅画 the number 一 is written yī in citation but is pronounced yì before the measure word here - see Measure words (classifiers).)
Examples

Common mistakes
- 他是在看电视。 -> 他在看电视。 (Tā zài kàn diànshì.) - The progressive 在 attaches straight to the verb; do not insert 是.
- 他不在睡觉。 -> 他没在睡觉。 (Tā méi zài shuìjiào.) - Negate an ongoing action with 没(有), never 不; 不在 would mean “isn’t here.”
- 他笑说。 -> 他笑着说。 (Tā xiào zhe shuō.) - A manner verb needs 着 to hang onto the main verb: V1 + 着 + V2 = do V2 in the manner of V1.
- 他在穿着衣服。 (meant as “he has clothes on”) -> 他穿着衣服。 (Tā chuān zhe yīfu.) - For a static “wearing” state use V着 alone; 在…着 forces the dynamic “in the act of getting dressed” reading.
- 桌子上着放一本书。 -> 桌子上放着一本书。 (Zhuōzi shàng fàng zhe yī běn shū.) - 着 comes right after its verb, not before it.
Tips
- The two-picture test: 在 = a video clip (something is moving - 他在坐下, tā zài zuò xià, he’s sitting down); 着 = a still photo (a pose or arrangement is frozen - 他坐着, tā zuò zhe, he’s seated). Pick the marker that matches what you’d film.
- Everyday speech often drops the marker and lets a final 呢 do the work: 你吃饭呢? already means “eating, are you?” Reach for 正在 only when you want to stress “right this minute” or sound a shade more formal.
- Same character, different jobs: the aspect particle 着 is toneless (zhe), but read zháo it is a resultative meaning “manage to / hit the mark,” as in 睡着 (shuìzháo, to fall asleep). Do not let 睡着了 (fell asleep) blur into 睡着 the durative - the tone and the sense both differ.
- Neither 在 nor 着 marks tense. 他在看书 can be “is” or “was” reading; the time comes from a time word (今天, 那时候) or context, not from the aspect marker.
