Verb reduplication and 一下

A2 动词重叠与「一下」 22 / 56

In short

Doubling a verb - 看 (kàn, “look”) -> 看看 (kànkan, “have a look”) - or putting 一下 (yíxià) after it makes the action short, casual and softer, the way English adds “a bit,” “a little,” or “have a …” One-syllable verbs double as VV (看看), two-syllable verbs as ABAB (学习学习), and 一下 attaches to either.

The rule

Reduplication and 一下 both express the tentative aspect: the action is brief, light, low-pressure, “just a little.” They are the everyday way to soften a request or a suggestion, so they turn a blunt order into something friendly.

Step 1 - Only controllable action verbs. You can reduplicate a verb you deliberately do - 看 (kàn), 说 (shuō, “speak”), 试 (shì, “try”), 想 (xiǎng, “think”), 休息 (xiūxi, “rest”). You cannot reduplicate states or non-actions: 是 (shì, “be”), 有 (yǒu, “have”), 在 (zài, “be at”), 喜欢 (xǐhuan, “like”) stay single.

Step 2 - One-syllable verbs: VV. Just repeat the verb; the second syllable becomes neutral tone. 看 -> 看看 (kànkan), 说 -> 说说 (shuōshuo), 想 -> 想想 (xiǎngxiang, “think it over”). You may also slip an unstressed 一 in the middle - V 一 V: 看一看 (kàn yi kàn), 试一试 (shì yi shì). The 一 here is toneless, and this infix works for one-syllable verbs only.

Step 3 - Two-syllable verbs: ABAB. Repeat the whole word, not each syllable. 学习 (xuéxí, “study”) -> 学习学习 (xuéxí xuéxí), 休息 -> 休息休息 (xiūxi xiūxi), 介绍 (jièshào, “introduce”) -> 介绍介绍. Never AABB (not 学学习习), and no 一 infix with two-syllable verbs.

Step 4 - V 一下 = the same idea, any verb. Put 一下 after the verb: 看一下 (kàn yíxià, “have a look”), 等一下 (děng yíxià, “wait a moment”), 介绍一下 (jièshào yíxià, “introduce briefly”). It means “do it once / briefly” and, unlike V 一 V, it happily attaches to two-syllable verbs too. Note the sandhi: 一 is citation yī, but before the 4th-tone 下 (xià) it is pronounced yí, so 一下 = yíxià.

Step 5 - Objects and completed actions. An object comes after the whole reduplicated verb: 看看电视 (kànkan diànshì, “watch a bit of TV”), 用一下你的电脑 (yòng yíxià nǐ de diànnǎo, “use your computer for a sec”). For a brief completed action, slot 了 inside: monosyllabic 看了看 (kàn le kàn, “took a quick look”), 想了想 (xiǎng le xiǎng, “thought for a moment”).

Forms & patterns

How each verb type reduplicates:

Verb typeBaseTentative formPinyinMeaning
One-syllable看看看kànkanhave a look
One-syllable + 一看看一看kàn yi kànhave a little look
One-syllable + 了 (completed)看看了看kàn le kàntook a quick look
Two-syllable (ABAB)学习学习学习xuéxí xuéxístudy a bit
Any verb + 一下看 / 介绍看一下 / 介绍一下kàn yíxià / jièshào yíxiàhave a look / introduce briefly

V 一 V vs V 一下 - overlapping, but not identical:

V 一 V (看一看)V 一下 (看一下)
Verb lengthone syllable onlyone or two syllables
The 一unstressed, tonelesssaid yí (2nd tone before 下)
Feelsoft, tentative”once / briefly,” very common

Examples

  • 你看看这本书。 (Nǐ kànkan zhè běn shū.) - Have a look at this book.
  • 我想想。 (Wǒ xiǎngxiang.) - Let me think for a moment.
  • 请等一下。 (Qǐng děng yíxià.) - Please wait a moment.
  • 我们休息休息吧。 (Wǒmen xiūxi xiūxi ba.) - Let’s take a little rest.
  • 你试一试这件衣服。 (Nǐ shì yi shì zhè jiàn yīfu.) - Try this piece of clothing on.
  • 我给你介绍一下。 (Wǒ gěi nǐ jièshào yíxià.) - Let me introduce them to you briefly.
  • 他想了想,然后说…… (Tā xiǎng le xiǎng, ránhòu shuō……) - He thought for a moment, then said …
  • 我可以用一下你的电脑吗? (Wǒ kěyǐ yòng yíxià nǐ de diànnǎo ma?) - Can I use your computer for a sec?
  • 我们商量商量这件事。 (Wǒmen shāngliang shāngliang zhè jiàn shì.) - Let’s talk this matter over a bit.
  • 你尝尝这个菜。 (Nǐ chángchang zhège cài.) - Have a taste of this dish.

Common mistakes

  • 学学习习 -> 学习学习 (xuéxí xuéxí) - Two-syllable verbs repeat as a whole word (ABAB), never syllable by syllable (AABB).
  • 学习一学习 -> 学习学习 / 学习一下 - The 一 infix (V 一 V) works only for one-syllable verbs; a two-syllable verb uses plain ABAB or 一下.
  • 我正在看看电视。 -> 我在看电视。 / 我看看电视。 - Reduplication means a brief, casual action, so it clashes with the ongoing 在/正在.
  • 看看了 -> 看了看 (kàn le kàn) - For a brief completed action the 了 goes inside, between the two verbs, not after them.
  • 我是是学生。 -> 我是学生。 - Only controllable action verbs reduplicate; 是/有/在 and stative verbs cannot.

Tips

  • Reduplication and 一下 are politeness tools. 看看 / 看一下 turn a blunt “Look!” into a friendly “Have a look,” and pair naturally with the suggestion particle 吧: 试试吧 (shì shi ba, “go on, give it a try”).
  • In one-syllable reduplication the second syllable is neutral tone: 看看 = kànkan, not kànkàn. The stress - and the meaning - sit on the first syllable.
  • When unsure, reach for 一下: it attaches to any action verb, one syllable or two, and never disturbs the verb’s own tones. Just say it yíxià (一 -> 2nd tone before the 4th-tone 下).
  • Reduplication is not counting. To say “read it twice / look it over once” you use the frequency words 次/遍 instead (see Duration and frequency complements); 看看 only ever means “a little look,” with no number attached.
