Yes/no questions with 吗 and sentence-final particles

A1 「吗」问句与语气助词(呢、吧、啊、嘛) 11 / 56

In short

To ask a yes/no question, take a plain statement and add 吗 (ma) at the very end - nothing else moves: 你是学生 (you are a student) -> 你是学生吗?(are you a student?). Other sentence-final particles color the mood instead: 呢 (ne) = “and you? / where is…?”, 吧 (ba) = a suggestion or a guess, 啊 (a) = warmth/exclamation, 嘛 (ma) = “it’s obvious”. All five are neutral tone and always sit last.

The rule

The single most important fact: Chinese does not reorder a sentence to ask a question. There is no “do/does”, no inversion. You keep the statement exactly as it stands and hang a particle on the end.

Step 1 - Yes/no question: Statement + 吗?

吗 (ma, neutral tone) turns any statement into a yes/no question.

Statement + 吗?

  • 你是学生。 (Nǐ shì xuésheng.) - You are a student. -> 你是学生吗? (Nǐ shì xuésheng ma?) - Are you a student?

The word order is identical; only 吗 is added. A 吗 question expects a yes or no answer, so do not put 吗 on a sentence that already contains a question word (谁 shéi “who”, 什么 shénme “what”, 哪 nǎ “which”) or an A-not-A form - those are separate question types owned by Question-word, A-not-A and alternative questions.

Answering has no all-purpose “yes/no”. Chinese answers by echoing the sentence’s own verb: 是 / 不是 (shì / bú shì), 有 / 没有 (yǒu / méiyǒu), 对 / 不对 (duì / bú duì). A one-word 是吗?(shì ma?) on its own means “Really? / Is that so?”.

Step 2 - 呢 (ne): “and you? / where is…?”

Two everyday jobs:

  • Bounce a topic back. After a first full sentence, a bare noun + 呢 means “and X? / what about X?”: 我很好,你呢? (Wǒ hěn hǎo, nǐ ne?) - I’m fine, and you?
  • “Where is X?” A noun + 呢 with no other context asks where something has got to: 我的手机呢? (Wǒ de shǒujī ne?) - Where’s my phone?

(呢 also tags an action in progress - 他睡觉呢 “he’s sleeping” - but that overlaps Ongoing actions (在/正在 and 着); stick to the two jobs above.)

Step 3 - 吧 (ba): suggestion or guess

吧 softens the sentence in one of two directions:

  • Suggestion / soft command: 我们走吧! (Wǒmen zǒu ba!) - Let’s go! It turns a bare order into an invitation.
  • Supposition seeking confirmation: 你是老师吧? (Nǐ shì lǎoshī ba?) - You’re a teacher, right? You already think so and just want it confirmed.

Contrast with 吗: 你是老师吗? = a genuine question (no idea); 你是老师吧? = “I’m fairly sure, confirm it”.

Step 4 - 啊 (a) and 嘛 (ma): flavor particles

  • 啊 adds warmth, agreement or mild exclamation: 好啊! (Hǎo a!) - Sure! / OK!; 是啊。 (Shì a.) - Yeah, that’s right. (In casual writing you may see the sound spelled out as 呀/哇/哪; the standard character is 啊.)
  • 嘛 (ma, neutral tone) marks something as self-evident - “obviously, as you know”: 这很简单嘛! (Zhè hěn jiǎndān ma!) - This is easy, obviously! Note the character: 嘛 ≠ the question particle 吗. Same sound, opposite job.

Forms & patterns

The five sentence-final particles at a glance (all neutral tone, all sit last):

ParticlePinyinAddsExample
吗mayes/no question你忙吗?(nǐ máng ma?) are you busy?
呢ne”and you? / where is?”你呢?(nǐ ne?) and you?
吧basuggestion / guess走吧!(zǒu ba!) let’s go!
啊awarmth / exclamation好啊!(hǎo a!) sure!
嘛ma”it’s obvious”容易嘛!(róngyì ma!) it’s easy, obviously!

Genuine question (吗) vs guess/suggestion (吧):

You want to…UseExampleFeel
ask with no idea of the answer吗你是老师吗?(nǐ shì lǎoshī ma?)real yes/no question
confirm what you suspect吧你是老师吧?(nǐ shì lǎoshī ba?)“…right?“
propose doing something吧我们走吧。(wǒmen zǒu ba.)“let’s…”

Answering a 吗 question - echo the verb, don’t reach for a “yes” word:

QuestionYesNo
你是学生吗?(shì?)是。(shì)不是。(bú shì)
你有车吗?(yǒu?)有。(yǒu)没有。(méiyǒu)
你忙吗?(máng?)忙。(máng)不忙。(bù máng)
你去吗?(qù?)去。(qù)不去。(bú qù)

(不 is bù, but shifts to bú before a 4th-tone syllable: bú shì, bú qù - yet bù máng, because 忙 máng is 2nd tone. When the statement carries 了 - 你吃饭了吗? - the positive answer keeps it, 吃了 (chī le), while the negative uses 没 in place of 不 and drops 了: 没吃 (méi chī), never 不吃 or 没吃了.)

Examples

  • 你是中国人吗? (Nǐ shì Zhōngguó rén ma?) - Are you Chinese?
  • 你饿吗? (Nǐ è ma?) - Are you hungry?
  • 你吃饭了吗? (Nǐ chī fàn le ma?) - Have you eaten?
  • 我很好,你呢? (Wǒ hěn hǎo, nǐ ne?) - I’m fine, and you?
  • 我的钥匙呢? (Wǒ de yàoshi ne?) - Where are my keys?
  • 我们喝茶吧。 (Wǒmen hē chá ba.) - Let’s have some tea.
  • 你累了吧? (Nǐ lèi le ba?) - You’re tired, aren’t you?
  • 是啊,我也这么想。 (Shì a, wǒ yě zhème xiǎng.) - Yeah, I think so too.
  • 这么贵?是吗? (Zhème guì? Shì ma?) - That expensive? Really?

Common mistakes

  • 你去哪儿吗? -> 你去哪儿? (Nǐ qù nǎr?) - a sentence that already has a question word (哪儿 nǎr, “where”) is already a question; 吗 makes a yes/no question, so never stack it on top of a question word.
  • 你是不是老师吗? -> 你是老师吗? (or 你是不是老师?) - 吗 and A-not-A are two different ways to ask the same yes/no question. Pick one; never combine them.
  • 你有车吗?——是。 -> ……——有。/ 没有。 - there is no all-purpose “yes”; answer by echoing the sentence’s own verb (有 -> 有 / 没有), not with 是.
  • 这很简单吗! (meaning “this is obviously easy!”) -> 这很简单嘛! - 吗 (with 马) asks a question; the “as you know / obviously” particle is 嘛 (with 麻). Same sound, different character and job.
  • 你累吗了? -> 你累了吗? (Nǐ lèi le ma?) - the question particle 吗 goes at the very end, after 了; nothing may follow it.

Tips

  • 吗 is your one must-have question tool at A1: state the sentence, add 吗, done - no reordering, no auxiliary verb. If you master a single particle first, make it 吗.
  • All five particles are neutral tone and strictly sentence-final - light, unstressed, right at the edge. Nothing ever comes after them.
  • 吗 vs 嘛: 吗 = 口 + 马 asks a question (curious, rising); 嘛 = 口 + 麻 asserts the obvious (flat, “duh”). When in doubt, if you’re asking, it’s 吗.
  • 呢 has two drill-worthy jobs: bounce-back 你呢? (and you?) and lost-object 我的手机呢? (where’s my phone?). Both are just noun/topic + 呢.
