Direct & indirect speech
B1 Пряма й непряма мова 50 / 58
In short
Ukrainian turns a quotation (пряма мова, “direct speech”) into a subordinate clause (непряма мова, “indirect/reported speech”) by dropping the quotation marks and joining the words to the reporting verb with a connector: що for statements, чи for yes/no questions, a question word for wh-questions, and щоб for requests and commands. The one big relief for an English speaker: there is no tense backshift. The reported verb keeps exactly the tense the original speaker used. You re-anchor only the persons (pronouns and possessives) and, when the situation changes, the time/place words.
The rule
A direct quotation is written with «ялинки» guillemets and attached to a reporting verb (сказа́ти, запита́ти, попроси́ти …), most often with a colon and a dash:
- А: «П». — Він сказа́в: «Я за́йнятий».
- «П», — а. — «Я за́йнятий», — сказа́в він.
To report it, delete the marks, add the right connector, and shift the pronouns to the reporter’s point of view:
- «Я живу́ в Ки́єві» → Він сказа́в, що живе́ в Ки́єві.
No backshift (the key point). In English a present tense inside the quote must move back one step: “I am reading” → He said he was reading. Ukrainian does nothing of the sort — the present stays present, the past stays past, the future stays future:
- «Я чита́ю» (present) → Він сказа́в, що чита́є (still present).
- «Я прочита́в» (past) → Він сказа́в, що прочита́в (still past).
Choosing the connector by sentence type:
- Statement → що (“that”).
- Yes/no question → чи (“whether/if”). The question mark disappears; the clause ends with a full stop.
- Wh-question → keep the question word (хто, що, де, коли, чому, як …).
- Command or request → щоб, and the verb after it takes its past-tense form (which works here like a subjunctive): «Зачини́ две́рі!» → Він попроси́в, щоб я зачини́в две́рі.
Forms & patterns
Common reporting verbs (perfective / imperfective):
| Verb | Meaning | Introduces |
|---|---|---|
| сказа́ти / каза́ти | to say | statement (що) |
| запита́ти / пита́ти | to ask (a question) | question (чи / question word) |
| відпові́сти / відповіда́ти | to answer | statement (що) |
| попроси́ти / проси́ти | to ask, request | request (щоб) |
| пора́дити / ра́дити | to advise | request (щоб) |
| пообіця́ти / обіця́ти | to promise | statement (що) |
| запропонува́ти / пропонува́ти | to suggest | request (щоб) |
| повідо́мити / повідомля́ти | to inform | statement (що) |
Connector by illocution:
| Sentence type | Connector | Frame |
|---|---|---|
| Statement | що | …, що + clause (tense unchanged) |
| Yes/no question | чи | …, чи + clause (no «?») |
| Wh-question | хто, що, де, коли́, чому́, як … | …, + question word + clause |
| Command / request | щоб | …, щоб + verb in past-tense form |
Re-anchoring persons and deixis (typical shift when a third party reports):
| Direct | → Reported |
|---|---|
| я | він / вона́ |
| ми | вони́ |
| мій, наш (owner is not the reported clause’s subject) | його́ / її́, ї́хній |
| мій, наш (owner is the reported clause’s subject) | свій |
| тут | там |
| за́раз | тоді́ |
| сього́дні | того́ дня |
Punctuation of direct speech:
| Pattern | Example |
|---|---|
| Author first: А: «П». | Він сказа́в: «Я за́йнятий». |
| Speech first: «П», — а. | «Я за́йнятий», — сказа́в він. |
| Speech split: «П, — а, — п». | «Я, — сказа́в він, — за́йнятий». |
| Question kept inside: «П?» — а. | «Хто там?» — запита́ла вона́. |
Examples

| Вона́ сказа́ла, що ба́чила цей фільм. | She said that she had seen this film. (past kept) |

| Друг пообіця́в, що зателефону́є вве́чері. | My friend promised that he would call in the evening. |
| «Котра́ годи́на?» — запита́в він. | ”What time is it?” he asked. (direct question) |
Common mistakes
- Він сказа́в, що жив у Ки́єві (reporting present «Я живу́») -> Він сказа́в, що живе́ в Ки́єві — no backshift: keep the tense of the quote; changing живе́→жив shifts the meaning to “used to live”.
- Він запита́в, що я прийду́ -> Він запита́в, чи я прийду́ — a yes/no question is reported with чи, not що.
- Ма́ма сказа́ла, що я прибра́в кімна́ту (meaning a command) -> Ма́ма сказа́ла, щоб я прибра́в кімна́ту — commands/requests take щоб; що would make it a plain statement (“that I tidied the room”).
- Він попроси́в, щоб зачини́ две́рі -> Він попроси́в, щоб я зачини́в две́рі — after щоб use the past-tense form (зачини́в), never the imperative (зачини́).
- Він сказа́в, що я гото́вий (echoing the quote’s «я») -> Він сказа́в, що він гото́вий — re-anchor the first-person «я» of the quote to the reporter’s third person.
- Він сказа́в “приві́т”. -> Він сказа́в: «Приві́т». — Ukrainian direct speech uses «ялинки», a colon before the quote, and a capital letter inside.
Tips
- The golden rule: re-anchor persons, not tense. Whatever tense the speaker used stays; only pronouns, possessives and (sometimes) deictic words move.
- Match the connector to the illocution: що = statement, чи = yes/no question, question word = wh-question, щоб = request/command.
- After щоб the verb is always in its past-tense form — it behaves like a subjunctive: щоб я зроби́в, щоб ти прийшо́в, щоб вони́ прочита́ли.
- A reported question loses its question mark and its rising intonation; it ends with a full stop: Він запита́в, котра́ годи́на.
- Shift я→він/вона́, ти→я, мій→його́/її́ so the sentence is told from the reporter’s viewpoint — but if the owner is the reported clause’s own subject, the possessive is свій: «Я взяв свою́ ку́ртку» → Він сказа́в, що взяв свою́ ку́ртку (“his own”; його́ ку́ртку would be someone else’s).
- Deictic words move only when the setting changes (тут→там, за́раз→тоді́, сього́дні→того́ дня). If you report the here-and-now, you may keep them as they are.
- Remember щоб = що + б: the same particle б/би that builds the conditional is hiding inside it, which is why the past form follows.
