Degrees of comparison of adjectives
B1 Ступені порівняння прикметників 36 / 58
In short
Ukrainian, like English, adds two degrees on top of the plain adjective: a comparative (ви́щий ступі́нь, “bigger, more interesting”) and a superlative (найви́щий ступі́нь, “biggest, most interesting”). Each degree has a synthetic one-word form and an analytic two-word form. The one-word forms — бі́льший, найбі́льший, нові́ший, найнові́ший — are already within reach at A2: you take the stem and add -ш-/-іш- for the comparative, then glue най- in front for the superlative. What B1 adds is the tidy-up: a short list of suppletive irregulars (бі́льший, ме́нший, кра́щий, гі́рший) and the analytic pattern більш / менш + adjective — the only way to say “less”.
The rule
- Two degrees. Comparative = “more X / -er”; superlative = “most X / -est”. The plain adjective (нови́й, висо́кий) is the positive degree and carries no marker.
- Synthetic comparative = stem + -ш- / -іш-. The fuller -іш- goes on most adjectives (нови́й → нові́ший, си́льний → сильні́ший); the bare -ш- goes on a group of common ones and often triggers a sound change (see below). The result agrees in gender, number and case like any hard-group adjective (lesson 22): нові́ший, нові́ша, нові́ше, нові́ші.
- Synthetic superlative = най- + comparative. You never attach най- to the positive: висо́кий → ви́щий → найви́щий. For extra emphasis prefix якнай- or щонай-: якнайкра́щий “the very best”.
- Consonant changes at the -ш- seam. An adjective that takes the bare -ш- first drops a suffix -к- / -ок- / -ек- / -ьк- if it has one (коро́ткий → коро́тший, соло́дкий → соло́дший, глибо́кий → гли́бший; м’яки́й keeps its к: м’я́кший); only then does the bared stem meet ш: г, з, ж → жч (доро[г]и́й → доро́жчий, ни[з]ьки́й → ни́жчий, ва[ж]ки́й → ва́жчий), с → щ (ви[с]о́кий → ви́щий). This is the same alternation family as lesson 35. Two everyday adjectives sit outside it: до́вгий → до́вший (the г is simply lost) and легки́й → ле́гший (the -к- drops and the г survives) — neither gives жч.
- Suppletive irregulars (B1). Four very frequent adjectives build the comparative from a different root: вели́кий → бі́льший, мали́й → ме́нший, до́брий/хоро́ший → кра́щий, пога́ний → гі́рший.
- Analytic forms (B1). більш / менш + positive adjective for the comparative, найбільш / найменш + positive for the superlative: більш важли́вий, найменш ціка́вий. Note that менш / найменш is the only way to say “less / least” — there is no one-word form for it.
- Saying “than”. Use за + accusative, від + genitive, or ніж / як + same case as the first member: ви́щий за бра́та = ви́щий від бра́та = ви́щий, ніж брат.
Forms & patterns
Regular synthetic forms (A2-accessible). Comparative in -ш-/-іш-, superlative = най- + comparative:
| Positive | Comparative (ви́щий ст.) | Superlative (найви́щий ст.) | English |
|---|---|---|---|
Suppletive forms (B1) — a different root, learn as a set:
| Positive | Comparative | Superlative | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| вели́кий | бі́льший | найбі́льший | big → bigger → biggest |
| мали́й | ме́нший | найме́нший | small → smaller → smallest |
| до́брий / хоро́ший | кра́щий | найкра́щий | good → better → best |
| пога́ний | гі́рший | найгі́рший | bad → worse → worst |
Analytic forms (B1) — більш/менш carry the degree, the adjective stays in the positive:
| Comparative | English | Superlative | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| більш важли́вий | more important | найбільш важли́вий | most important |
| менш важли́вий | less important | найменш важли́вий | least important |
| більш відо́мий | more famous | найбільш відо́мий | most famous |
| менш ціка́вий | less interesting | найменш ціка́вий | least interesting |
A comparative declines like a hard-group adjective. Sample paradigm of нові́ший (stress stays on -і- throughout):
| Case | Masc | Fem | Neut | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nom | нові́ший | нові́ша | нові́ше | нові́ші |
| Gen | нові́шого | нові́шої | нові́шого | нові́ших |

Common mistakes
- більш ви́щий -> ви́щий (or більш висо́кий) — one comparative marker only; більш on top of a synthetic comparative is a double comparative.
- висо́кший -> ви́щий, коро́ткший -> коро́тший — the suffix -к-/-ок- drops before -ший; you can’t just tack -ший onto висок-, коротк-.
- дорогши́й -> доро́жчий — г fuses with ш to жч (so do з and ж) — but not in до́вший or ле́гший.
- найвисо́кий -> найви́щий — най- glues onto the comparative (ви́щий), never onto the positive.
- ви́щий чим брат -> ви́щий за бра́та / ви́щий, ніж брат — say “than” with за+accusative, від+genitive, or ніж/як; чим is a Russianism.
- менше важли́вий -> менш важли́вий — before an adjective the marker is менш; менше is the adverb “less (quantity)”.
Tips
- Reach for the one-word synthetic form with short, common adjectives (нові́ший, not більш нови́й). Keep більш + adjective for long, derived, or participle-like adjectives where -іш- would sound clumsy.
- Never stack більш on a form that already ends in -ший — pick one degree marker.
- Memorize the four suppletive families (вели́кий / мали́й / до́брий / пога́ний) first: they are by far the highest-frequency comparatives.
- менш / найменш is your only tool for “less / least” — there is no synthetic equivalent.
- Watch the seam sounds: висо́кий → ви́щий, дороги́й → доро́жчий, ни[з]ьки́й → ни́жчий. When in doubt, fall back on the analytic більш + adjective, which never alternates.
- Say “than” three interchangeable ways: за + accusative, від + genitive, or ніж / як + the same case as the thing being compared.
- For an emphatic top degree, prefix якнай- or щонай-: якнайшви́дший, щонайбі́льший.
