Consonant alternations (к//ц, г//з, х//с; козак–козаче)

In short
Ukrainian velar consonants к, г, х dislike sitting in front of certain endings, so the stem swaps them out. Before the dative/locative ending -і they soften to ц, з, с (рука́ → у руці́); before the masculine vocative ending -е they shift to ч, ж, ш (коза́к → коза́че). The consonant changes, the meaning does not — you only have to remember to make the swap when you build the form.
The rule
There are two different swaps, and the ending you add decides which one fires. Keep them apart and the rest is mechanical.
Swap A — before the ending -і (dative & locative singular). When a noun stem ends in a velar and you add the soft ending -і, the velar softens one step:
- к → ц (рука́ → руці́)
- г → з (нога́ → нозі́)
- х → с (му́ха → му́сі)
This is the swap named in the title (к//ц, г//з, х//с). It shows up mainly in first-declension feminine nouns (dative and locative singular are then identical) and in the locative singular of masculine nouns that take -і (на бе́резі, на по́версі).
Swap B — before the vocative ending -е (masculine, second declension). When you call to someone or something with the vocative and the stem ends in a velar, the ending is -е and the velar shifts further, to a hushing consonant:
- к → ч (коза́к → коза́че)
- г → ж (друг → дру́же)
- х → ш (пасту́х → пасту́ше)
Crucially, the two swaps never mix: dative/locative gives ц/з/с, the vocative gives ч/ж/ш. Note also that feminine nouns take the vocative ending -о (ру́ко), which is not a trigger, so feminine nouns have no consonant shift in the vocative — only in the dative/locative.
Forms & patterns
Swap A — velar → ц/з/с before dative/locative -і
| Velar | → | Nom. sg. | Dat./Loc. sg. |
|---|---|---|---|
| к | ц | рука́ | (у) руці́ |
| г | з | нога́ | (на) нозі́ |
| х | с | му́ха | (на) му́сі |
Swap B — velar → ч/ж/ш before vocative -е (masculine)
| Velar | → | Nom. sg. | Vocative sg. |
|---|---|---|---|
| к | ч | коза́к | коза́че |
| г | ж | друг | дру́же |
| х | ш | пасту́х | пасту́ше |
Where the shift sits in a full paradigm — the feminine noun рука́ (only the dat./loc. cell alternates; acc. -у and voc. -о leave the к alone):
| Case | Singular |
|---|---|
| Nominative | рука́ |
| Genitive | руки́ |
| Dative | руці́ |
| Accusative | ру́ку |
| Instrumental | руко́ю |
| Locative | (на) руці́ |
| Vocative | ру́ко |

Common mistakes
- на ногі́ -> на нозі́ — before the locative -і the г must become з; keeping the velar is the classic slip.
- у кни́гі -> у кни́зі — same swap, г → з; the ending -і never sits on a bare velar here.
- на по́верхі -> на по́версі — х → с before the locative -і, not х + і.
- друг, допоможи́! -> дру́же, допоможи́! — don’t address someone with the nominative; the vocative of друг is дру́же (г → ж).
- козаку́ / козаке́ -> коза́че — masculine vocative of a velar stem is -е with к → ч.
- дру́зе -> дру́же — don’t borrow the dative/locative з for the vocative; the vocative uses ж (ч/ж/ш), never ц/з/с.
- трима́ю в ру́ку -> трима́ю в руці́ — “in the hand” is the locative (руці́), not the accusative (ру́ку), and it triggers к → ц.
Tips
- Tie each swap to its ending, not to the case name: -і pulls out ц/з/с, vocative -е pulls out ч/ж/ш. That single hook prevents most errors.
- Feminine -а nouns show Swap A twice in the singular — dative and locative are identical, so руці́ covers both “to the hand” and “on the hand”.
- Feminine vocative is -о (ру́ко) and never alternates; it is the masculine vocative -е that shifts the velar (коза́че, дру́же).
- Stress belongs to the word, not the rule: end-stressed рука́ keeps it (руці́), root-stressed му́ха keeps it (му́сі). Learn the stress pattern per noun.
- Drill the pairs out loud: “нога́ – на нозі́”, “друг – дру́же”, “пасту́х – пасту́ше”. Muscle memory beats reciting the table.
- The same ч/ж/ш shifts turn up in diminutives and verbs (рука́ → ру́чка, пекти́ → печу́, пече́, печу́ть), so spotting к/ч, г/ж, х/ш pays off well beyond these nouns — but a velar-stem verb keeps the hushing consonant through the whole present, and shows the velar only in the infinitive and the past (пік, пекла́).
