Participles (active & passive)

B2 Причастия 45 / 50

In short

A прича́стие (participle) is a verbal adjective: it is built from a verb but agrees like an adjective in gender, number and case. It packs a whole кото́рый-clause into one word: студе́нт, кото́рый чита́ет → чита́ющий студе́нт. Active participles describe the doer (чита́ющий = the one reading); passive ones describe the thing acted upon (чита́емый = being read). This is mostly a written / bookish form - first learn to recognise it.

The rule

Two big choices: active vs passive, and present vs past.

1. Active (действительные) = the noun does the action.

  • Present (only from imperfective verbs): present-tense stem + -ущ-/-ющ- (1st conj.) or -ащ-/-ящ- (2nd conj.) + adjective ending. From они́ чита́ют → чита́ющий (reading); они́ говоря́т → говоря́щий (speaking).
  • Past: past stem + -вш- (after a vowel) or -ш- (after a consonant). чита́ть → чита́вший (who was reading), прочита́ть → прочита́вший (who has read), нести́ (нёс) → нёсший (who was carrying).

2. Passive (страдательные) = the action is done to the noun. Only from transitive verbs.

  • Present (imperfective): 1st-person-plural stem + -ем- (1st conj.) or -им- (2nd conj.). чита́ем → чита́емый (being read), лю́бим → люби́мый (loved/favourite). Fairly rare; several are now plain adjectives (люби́мый, ви́димый).
  • Past (usually perfective): -нн- (verbs in -ать/-ять), -енн-/-ённ- (verbs in -ить + consonant stems), or -т- (many in -нуть, -ыть, -оть, monosyllables). прочита́ть → прочи́танный, постро́ить → постро́енный, реши́ть → решённый, откры́ть → откры́тый, сде́лать → сде́ланный.

3. Replacing a кото́рый-clause. A participle can replace кото́рый only when кото́рый is the subject (active) or the direct object (passive) of its own clause:

кото́рый-clauseParticiple phraseType
студе́нт, кото́рый написа́л эссе́написа́вший эссе́ студе́нтactive past
тури́ст, кото́рый говори́т по-ру́сскиговоря́щий по-ру́сски тури́стactive present
кни́га, кото́рую чита́ютчита́емая кни́гаpassive present
дом, кото́рый постро́илипостро́енный домpassive past

4. Spelling -нн- vs -н-. The full (attributive) passive past participle has -нн-: прочи́танная кни́га, постро́енный дом. The short form - the passive predicate (lesson 47) - has a single -н-: кни́га прочи́тана, дом постро́ен.

5. Commas. A participial phrase after its noun is set off by commas, exactly as the кото́рый-clause it replaces: студе́нт, чита́ющий газе́ту, … (one that ends the sentence keeps only the opening comma). Moved in front of the noun it normally takes no comma at all: чита́ющий газе́ту студе́нт.

Forms & patterns

The four types at a glance (from чита́ть / прочита́ть, говори́ть, постро́ить):

TypeSuffixExampleMeaning
Active present-ущ-/-ющ-, -ащ-/-ящ-чита́ющий, говоря́щийthe one (who is) reading / speaking
Active past-вш-, -ш-чита́вший, прочита́вший, нёсшийthe one who was reading / has read / was carrying
Passive present-ем-, -им-чита́емый, люби́мый(being) read, loved
Passive past-нн-, -енн-/-ённ-, -т-прочи́танный, постро́енный, откры́тый(having been) read, built, opened

Reflexive verbs. The -ся stays put after the adjective ending and never shortens to -сь: занима́ться → занима́ющийся, занима́вшаяся; верну́ться → верну́вшийся. Being intransitive, they have no passive participles.

Agreement. A participle declines like an ordinary adjective and copies its noun’s gender, number and case (here чита́ющий with masc. nouns):

CaseMasc.Neut.Fem.Plural
Nom.чита́ющийчита́ющеечита́ющаячита́ющие
Gen.чита́ющегочита́ющегочита́ющейчита́ющих
Dat.чита́ющемучита́ющемучита́ющейчита́ющим
Acc.= N./G.чита́ющеечита́ющую= N./G.
Inst.чита́ющимчита́ющимчита́ющейчита́ющими
Prep.(о) чита́ющем(о) чита́ющем(о) чита́ющей(о) чита́ющих

Passive past participles in -нный/-енный decline like hard adjectives (as но́вый): прочи́танный, прочи́танного, прочи́танному, прочи́танным, о прочи́танном.

Common mistakes

  • чита́ющая студе́нт -> чита́ющий студе́нт - the participle must agree in gender/number with its noun (студе́нт = masc.).
  • Я ви́жу студе́нта, чита́ющий -> студе́нта, чита́ющего - it also takes the noun’s case (here accusative студе́нта).
  • студе́нт, кото́рый написа́л -> написа́вший студе́нт, not напи́санный - the student does the action, so use the active participle (-вш-), not the passive.
  • кни́га, кото́рую чита́ют -> чита́емая кни́га, not прочи́танная - “are reading now” is present + imperfective, so present passive (-ем-), not past.
  • кни́га прочи́танна -> кни́га прочи́тана - the short (predicate) form has a single -н-; only the full attributive form keeps -нн- (прочи́танная кни́га).

Tips

  • Read the suffix. -щ- = active (the doer is the noun); -м- / -нн- / -енн- / -т- = passive (the noun is acted upon). That one letter tells you who does what.
  • Decode back to the verb: strip the suffix and ending. чита́-ющ-ий → чита́ть (present, active); про-чи́-та-нн-ый → прочита́ть (past, passive). Recognition is the main B2 goal.
  • Which кото́рый? If кото́рый is the subject of its clause → active participle; if it is the direct object → passive participle. Otherwise keep the кото́рый-clause.
  • No noun? A participle can stand without one and work as a noun itself, still declining like an adjective: жела́ющие записа́ться (“those wanting to sign up”), среди́ приглашённых, всё ска́занное.
