Direct & indirect speech

B1 Прямая и косвенная речь 44 / 50

In short

Direct speech (пряма́я речь) quotes the exact words inside «ёлочки» with a colon or a dash. Indirect speech (ко́свенная речь) reports them in a subordinate clause - and, unlike English, Russian has NO tense backshift: keep the speaker’s original tense. Statements take что, yes/no questions take ли, wh-questions keep the question word (with calm statement order), and commands/requests take что́бы + past or an infinitive.

The rule

1. Direct speech (пряма́я речь). The exact words sit in «ёлочки». Author’s words can come before (colon) or after (comma/«?»/«!» + dash):

  • Author first: Он сказа́л: «Я за́нят». When the sentence runs on past the quote, the closing » is followed by , — (after ? or ! by the dash alone) and the continuation stays lower case: Он сказа́л: «Я за́нят», — и вы́шел. Он спроси́л: «Кто там?» — и откры́л дверь.
  • Quote first: «Я за́нят», — сказа́л он.
  • A question or exclamation keeps its own mark: «Ты гото́в?» — спроси́л он.

2. Indirect speech (ко́свенная речь) - the big difference from English: NO backshift. English shifts is → was, will → would. Russian does not: you copy the speaker’s original tense straight into the что-clause.

Direct (his words)Indirect (Russian)English
«Я за́нят» (present)Он сказа́л, что он за́нят.He said he was busy (lit. is).
«Я приду́» (future)Она́ сказа́ла, что придёт.She said she would come (lit. will).
«Я всё по́нял» (past)Он сказа́л, что всё по́нял.He said he had understood.

A comma always stands before что / ли / что́бы / где / кто …

3. Reported statements → что. Я ду́маю, что он прав. Она́ написа́ла, что ско́ро прие́дет. (что here ≈ “that”; it is never dropped as English “that” can be.)

4. Reported yes/no questions → ли (“whether”). Move the stressed/focused word to the front, then put ли right after it. Do not use е́сли here:

  • «Ты зна́ешь а́дрес?» → Он спроси́л, зна́ю ли я а́дрес.
  • «Она́ до́ма?» → Я не зна́ю, до́ма ли она́.

5. Reported wh-questions → keep the question word, use statement order. The question word (где, когда́, почему́, как, кто, что́…) stays, the clause takes calm statement order (subject before verb), and the pronouns shift:

  • «Где ты живёшь?» → Он спроси́л, где я живу́. (the pronoun shifts: ты → я)

6. Reported commands / requests → что́бы + past, or an infinitive.

  • With a different subject: что́бы + past - Он сказа́л, что́бы я подожда́л.
  • With verbs like проси́ть, веле́ть, сове́товать, предложи́ть: object + infinitive - проси́ть takes the accusative (Он попроси́л меня́ подожда́ть), the other three the dative (Он веле́л мне подожда́ть).

7. Pronouns shift by sense, exactly as in English: «Я тебе́ помогу́» → Он сказа́л, что он мне помо́жет.

Examples

РусскийEnglish
Он сказа́л, что он за́нят.He said he was busy (lit. is busy).
Она́ сказа́ла, что придёт в семь.She said she would come at seven.
Я ду́маю, что ты прав.I think (that) you’re right.
Он спроси́л, зна́ю ли я её а́дрес.He asked whether I knew her address.
Я не зна́ю, до́ма ли она́.I don’t know whether she is at home.
Он спроси́л, где я живу́.He asked where I lived.
Учи́тель сказа́л, что́бы мы закры́ли кни́ги.The teacher told us to close our books.
Она́ попроси́ла меня́ подожда́ть мину́ту.She asked me to wait a minute.

Common mistakes

  • Он сказа́л, что он был за́нят → за́нят - no backshift; keep the speaker’s present (use был only if he really was busy earlier).
  • Она́ сказа́ла, что пришла́ бы → придёт - “would come” reports a future; copy his future (придёт), not a conditional or past.
  • Я не зна́ю, е́сли она́ до́ма → до́ма ли она́ - “whether” in a reported question is ли, never е́сли (е́сли = conditional “if”).
  • Он спроси́л, где живёшь ты → где я живу́ - shift the pronoun to the reporter’s point of view (ты → я) and keep calm statement order.
  • Он сказа́л, что я подожда́л → Он сказа́л, что́бы я подожда́л / Он попроси́л меня́ подожда́ть - a reported command needs что́бы + past or проси́ть/веле́ть + infinitive.
  • Я ду́маю что… → Я ду́маю, что… - always a comma before что / ли / что́бы / где.

Tips

  • Mantra: no backshift. Whatever tense the speaker used, copy it verbatim into the что-clause. is → за́нят, will → придёт, never “shift one step back” as in English.
  • ли = “whether/if-question”. Build it in two moves: ① pull the focus word to the front, ② drop ли right after it - до́ма ли она́, зна́ю ли я.
  • Wh-reports go calm: keep the question word but switch to quiet statement order (subject before verb) and adjust pronouns - где я живу́, not где живёшь ты.
  • Commands: ask “same subject?” Different subject → что́бы + past (что́бы ты пришёл); after проси́ть/веле́ть → infinitive (попроси́л подожда́ть).
