Reflexive verbs (-ся)

A2 Возвратные глаголы (-ся) 26 / 50

In short

A reflexive verb carries the particle -ся (after a consonant) or -сь (after a vowel) glued onto the end of every form: учу́сь, у́чишься, у́чится. It can mean the action turns back on the subject (мы́ться = wash oneself), that two people do it to each other (встреча́ться = meet), it can be passive (Дом стро́ится = the house is being built), or the verb may simply exist only with -ся (смея́ться, боя́ться). A -ся verb never takes a direct object in the accusative.

The rule

1. The particle and its spelling. Take a normal verb and add the particle on top of the usual ending. The choice -ся / -сь depends only on the last letter of that ending:

  • after a consonant (including ь and й) → -ся: у́чится, у́чимся, учи́лся;
  • after a vowel → -сь: учу́сь, у́читесь, учи́лась.

The particle stays on every form - present, past, infinitive, imperative. It never drops off.

2. Five meanings. The same -ся can do different jobs; context decides which:

  • True reflexive - the subject acts on itself: мы́ться (wash oneself), одева́ться (get dressed), умыва́ться (wash one’s face). Roughly English -self / get-.
  • Reciprocal - two or more people act on each other: встреча́ться (meet), целова́ться (kiss), обнима́ться (hug), знако́миться (get acquainted).
  • Verbs that exist only with -ся - there is no form without the particle: смея́ться (laugh), наде́яться (hope), боя́ться (fear), горди́ться (be proud), занима́ться (study / do), улыба́ться (smile), нра́виться (please).
  • Passive (imperfective only) - the subject undergoes the action: Дом стро́ится (the house is being built), Кни́га легко́ чита́ется (the book reads easily).
  • Intransitive partner of a transitive verb - “by itself”, with no doer named: открыва́ть (open sth) → открыва́ться (open, of itself); начина́ть (begin sth) → начина́ться (begin, of itself).

3. No accusative object. Because the action already turns back on the subject, a -ся verb cannot take a direct object. Compare: Я мо́ю маши́ну (I wash the car - object) vs Я мо́юсь (I wash myself - no object). Some -ся verbs instead require another case: боя́ться + genitive, горди́ться / занима́ться / интересова́ться + instrumental.

Forms & patterns

Conjugation - учи́ться (to study / learn). The base verb is учи́ть; just add the particle:

Common mistakes

  • я учу́ся -> я учу́сь - after a vowel the particle is -сь, not -ся.
  • Я бою́сь соба́ку -> Я бою́сь соба́ки - боя́ться takes the genitive, never the accusative.
  • Я занима́юсь спорт -> Я занима́юсь спо́ртом - занима́ться takes the instrumental.
  • Дверь открыва́ет -> Дверь открыва́ется - “the door opens (by itself)” needs the intransitive -ся form; without it the verb demands an object.
  • Я мо́юсь маши́ну -> Я мо́ю маши́ну (or just Я мо́юсь = I wash up) - a -ся verb cannot take a direct object; drop -ся when there is one.

Tips

  • Spelling shortcut: -сь after a vowel (учу́сь, у́читесь, учи́лась), -ся after a consonant (у́чится, учи́лся). Look at the last letter before the particle - nothing else matters.
  • The particle is welded on for life: it appears in every form, including the infinitive and past, and never falls off.
  • Map many -ся verbs to English “get / become” or “each other”: одева́ться = get dressed, начина́ться = get started, встреча́ться = meet each other.
  • Memorise the case a few key verbs need: боя́ться + genitive; горди́ться, занима́ться, интересова́ться + instrumental.
  • Don’t confuse the verbal -ся with the pronoun себя́ (lesson 27): мо́юсь is a normal habitual I wash up, while мо́ю себя́ is rare and emphatic.
