Ordinal numerals, dates & time

A1 Порядковые числительные, даты и время 14 / 50

In short

Ordinal numerals (пе́рвый first, второ́й second, тре́тий third…) are really adjectives: they agree with their noun in gender, number and case (пе́рвый уро́к, пе́рвая страни́ца, на второ́м этаже́). Dates use a neuter ordinal + the month in the genitive (пя́тое ма́я), the year keeps the ordinal in the prepositional (в две ты́сячи два́дцать четвёртом году́), days of the week take в + accusative (в сре́ду), and seasons take the instrumental (ле́том, зимо́й).

The rule

1. Ordinals are adjectives. Unlike cardinal numerals (lesson 13), ordinals decline and agree exactly like ordinary adjectives (lesson 12). Pick the ending from the noun’s gender / case:

MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
hard (пе́рвый)пе́рвый эта́жпе́рвая страни́цапе́рвое ме́стопе́рвые дни
soft (тре́тий)тре́тий эта́жтре́тья страни́цатре́тье ме́стотре́тьи дни

Only тре́тий (third) has a soft declension (тре́тий, тре́тьего, тре́тьему, о тре́тьем…); all the others are hard like но́вый / молодо́й.

2. Compound ordinals - only the LAST word changes. In two- or three-word numbers, every part stays a plain cardinal and just the final word becomes ordinal: два́дцать пе́рвый (21st), две ты́сячи два́дцать четвёртый (2024th).

3. Dates. “What’s the date?” - Како́е сего́дня число́? The answer is a neuter ordinal (agreeing with the hidden word число́) + the month in the genitive:

  • Сего́дня пя́тое ма́я. (the fifth of May)
  • “On” a date puts the ordinal in the genitive: Она́ родила́сь тре́тьего апре́ля. (on the third of April)

4. Years. “In 2024” = в две ты́сячи два́дцать четвёртом году́ - the last word is an ordinal in the prepositional, and год takes the special locative ending -у́. To say the year on its own (nominative): Сейча́с две ты́сячи два́дцать четвёртый год. At the end of a full date, and after с or до, the year goes into the genitive: пятна́дцатого ма́рта две ты́сячи два́дцать четвёртого го́да, с две ты́сячи деся́того го́да.

5. Days of the week use в + accusative: в понеде́льник, во вто́рник, в сре́ду, в суббо́ту.

6. Time / clock. “What time is it?” - Кото́рый час? or Ско́лько вре́мени? The hour noun час follows the cardinal-numeral rule (lesson 13): час (1), два / три / четы́ре часа́ (gen. sing.), пять… часо́в (gen. pl.). Half hours name the hour that is running: полови́на + the NEXT hour as an ordinal in the genitive - полови́на седьмо́го is 6:30, not 7:30; with “at” only полови́на moves, into the prepositional: в полови́не седьмо́го.

7. Seasons answer “when?” in the instrumental (no preposition): весно́й, ле́том, о́сенью, зимо́й. (The times of day work the same way: у́тром, днём, ве́чером, но́чью.)

- Како́е сего́дня число́? - Сего́дня двадца́тое ма́я.”What’s the date today?” - “Today is the twentieth of May.”

Common mistakes

  • пе́рвый страни́ца -> пе́рвая страни́ца - the ordinal agrees in gender with the noun (страни́ца is feminine).
  • Сего́дня пя́тый май -> Сего́дня пя́тое ма́я - the date is neuter (число́) and the month goes into the genitive.
  • в две ты́сячи два́дцать четвёртый год -> в две ты́сячи два́дцать четвёртом году́ - “in” a year needs the prepositional (в … году́), and only the last word is ordinal.
  • в среда́ / в сре́да -> в сре́ду - days of the week take в + accusative.
  • Сейча́с два час / пять час -> два часа́ / пять часо́в - after 2-4 use gen. singular часа́, after 5+ gen. plural часо́в (lesson 13).

Tips

  • Learn each ordinal as an adjective trio (пе́рвый - пе́рвая - пе́рвое) and decline like но́вый. Remember the one oddball: тре́тий is soft (тре́тий, тре́тья, тре́тье, тре́тьи).
  • Memory hook for “when?”: a year -> в + prepositional (в … году́); a day -> в + accusative (в сре́ду); a season / time of day -> instrumental (ле́том, у́тром); a date -> neuter ordinal + month in genitive (пя́тое ма́я).
  • In long numbers only the last word is ordinal - so once you can count (lesson 13), you only need to “ordinalize” the final word.
  • “Floors” and rankings use the prepositional with на: на пе́рвом ме́сте (in first place), на второ́м этаже́ (on the second floor).
