Prefixed verbs of motion

B1 Czasowniki ruchu z przedrostkami 39 / 52

In short

In lesson 26 you met the base motion pairs iść / chodzić and jechać / jeździć, both imperfective. This lesson shows what happens when you glue a prefix onto them. A prefix does two things at once: it adds a direction (in, out, up to, across, away) and it changes the aspect. Prefix + the determinate verb gives a perfective verb; prefix + the indeterminate verb gives its imperfective partner. This is how Polish says “arrive”, “leave”, “enter”, “cross” and dozens more.

The rule

A prefix turns a plain “go” into a directed, bounded event. Which base verb you attach it to decides the aspect.

Prefix + determinate = perfective

Add a prefix to iść or jechać (the one-trip verbs) and you get a perfective verb - a single completed arrival/departure:

  • przyjść, przyjechać = “to arrive” (perfective)
  • wyjść, wyjechać = “to leave / go out” (perfective)

Because they are perfective, their present-tense endings express the simple future (lesson 23): przyjdę = “I will arrive”, not “I arrive”.

Prefix + indeterminate = imperfective

Add the same prefix to the indeterminate stem and you get the matching imperfective verb - for repetition, process, or an event in progress:

  • foot: the stem becomes -chodzić -> przychodzić, wychodzić
  • vehicle: the stem becomes -jeżdżać -> przyjeżdżać, wyjeżdżać

So each direction gives you a true aspect pair: przyjść (pf.) / przychodzić (impf.), wyjechać (pf.) / wyjeżdżać (impf.). Unlike the base pair in lesson 26, this really is the perfective/imperfective opposition of lesson 20.

What the prefixes mean

The commonest directional prefixes:

  • przy- = arrival, coming up to a point: przyjść (arrive)
  • wy- = out, exit: wyjść (go out)
  • w-/we- = in, entry: wejść (enter)
  • od-/ode- = away from, departure: odejść (walk away)
  • do- = as far as, reach: dojść (get to)
  • pod-/pode- = approach, up close: podejść (come up to)
  • prze- = across, through: przejść (cross)
  • z-/ze-/s- = down, or together: zejść (go down), zejść się (gather)
  • roze-…się = apart, disperse: rozejść się (part ways)
  • po- = set off (a fresh start of the trip): pójść, pojechać

The stem of -jść

When the prefix ends in a vowel, iść appears as -jść: przyjść, dojść, wyjść, przejść. When it ends in a consonant, an -e- is inserted: wejść, zejść, odejść, podejść. The prefix po- is special: po- + iść -> pójść (with ó).

Forms & patterns

One direction, both aspects (foot vs. vehicle)

Take przy- (“arrival”). Each cell is one full verb; the perfective conjugates as simple future.

FootVehicle
perfective (pf.)przyjśćprzyjechać
imperfective (impf.)przychodzićprzyjeżdżać

Conjugating the perfectives (endings = simple future)

przyjść (pf.)przyjechać (pf.)
japrzyjdęprzyjadę
typrzyjdzieszprzyjedziesz
on/ona/onoprzyjdzieprzyjedzie
myprzyjdziemyprzyjedziemy
wyprzyjdziecieprzyjedziecie
oni/oneprzyjdąprzyjadą
past (masc. sg.)przyszedłemprzyjechałem
past (fem. sg.)przyszłamprzyjechałam
past (3rd masc./fem.)przyszedł / przyszłaprzyjechał / przyjechała

Note the past root of -jść is -szedł- / -szł- (just like base iść): przyszedł (he arrived), przyszła (she arrived), przyszli (they, virile).

Conjugating the imperfectives (present tense)

przychodzić (impf.)przyjeżdżać (impf.)
japrzychodzęprzyjeżdżam
typrzychodziszprzyjeżdżasz
on/ona/onoprzychodziprzyjeżdża
myprzychodzimyprzyjeżdżamy
wyprzychodzicieprzyjeżdżacie
oni/oneprzychodząprzyjeżdżają

The system across prefixes (pf. / impf.)

DirectionFoot: pf. / impf.Vehicle: pf. / impf.
arrive (przy-)przyjść / przychodzićprzyjechać / przyjeżdżać
go out (wy-)wyjść / wychodzićwyjechać / wyjeżdżać
enter (w-/we-)wejść / wchodzićwjechać / wjeżdżać
leave, away (od-/ode-)odejść / odchodzićodjechać / odjeżdżać
reach (do-)dojść / dochodzićdojechać / dojeżdżać
approach (pod-/pode-)podejść / podchodzićpodjechać / podjeżdżać
cross (prze-)przejść / przechodzićprzejechać / przejeżdżać
go down (z-/s-)zejść / schodzićzjechać / zjeżdżać
set off (po-)pójść / (chodzić)pojechać / (jeździć)

The pattern is fully regular: foot imperfective is always -chodzić, vehicle imperfective is always -jeżdżać. The same prefixes work on the other motion roots too: przynieść / przynosić (“bring on foot”), przywieźć / przywozić (“bring by vehicle”), przylecieć / przylatywać (“arrive by air”).

Common mistakes

  • Będę przyjść. -> Przyjdę. - a perfective makes its own one-word future; never with będę.
  • Jutro przychodzę o ósmej. (one planned arrival) -> Jutro przyjdę o ósmej. - a single completed event needs the perfective przyjść.
  • Codziennie przyjdę do pracy. -> Codziennie przychodzę do pracy. - a habit needs the imperfective przychodzić.
  • Przyjeżdżam wczoraj. -> Przyjechałem wczoraj. / Przyjechałam wczoraj. - a finished past trip is perfective przyjechać.
  • wyjśc / wejśc -> wyjść / wejść - keep the -jść spelling; and w- + iść inserts -e-, giving wejść, not wiść.
  • poidę -> pójdę (from pójść) - po- + iść fuses to pójść, future pójdę, pójdziesz.
  • przychodzę do pracy autobusem (meaning by bus) -> przyjeżdżam do pracy autobusem - by vehicle use the -jeżdżać stem, not -chodzić (on foot).

Tips

  • Learn each direction as a pair on one card: przyjść / przychodzić, wyjechać / wyjeżdżać. The prefix + aspect are the two things to fix.
  • Two rock-solid formulas: foot imperfective = prefix + -chodzić; vehicle imperfective = prefix + -jeżdżać. Perfectives are always prefix + iść / jechać.
  • If the sentence is one finished or planned event, reach for the perfective (its “present” is future). If it is a habit or something in progress, reach for the imperfective.
  • Spelling hooks: after a vowel-prefix write -jść (przyjść, dojść); after a consonant-prefix insert -e- (wejść, zejść, odejść); po- gives pójść with ó.
  • The past of -jść keeps the base pattern szedł / szła / szli (przyszedł, wyszła, doszli) - do not regularize it.
