Reflexive pronoun siebie/sobie/sobą
B1 Zaimek zwrotny siebie/sobie/sobą 38 / 52
In short
Back in Lesson 6 you met the tiny fixed marker się. Now you meet its fuller family: siebie, sobie, sobą - a single reflexive pronoun that declines through the cases and points back to the subject of the clause, no matter who that subject is. Unlike English, one word covers myself, yourself, himself, ourselves and the rest. Its cousin swój does the same job for possession: “one’s own”, tied to whoever is doing the action.
The rule
siebie is the reflexive pronoun (zaimek zwrotny). It refers to the subject of its own clause and is the same for every person, number and gender: Myślę o sobie = I think about myself; Oni myślą o sobie = They think about themselves.
One pronoun, no nominative
siebie has no nominative form - it can never be the subject, only an object or the complement of a preposition. It fills all the other cases (genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental, locative) with the forms siebie / sobie / siebie / sobą / sobie.
się is just the short (clitic) form
The little się from Lesson 6 is the unstressed accusative/genitive of this same pronoun. Polish has a long (stressed) form and a short (clitic) form:
- Short: się - unstressed, glued near the verb, used for ordinary reflexive verbs: myję się, boję się.
- Long: siebie - stressed, used when the pronoun is emphasized, contrasted, stands first, or follows a preposition: Widzę tylko siebie (I see only myself); dla siebie, o sobie, ze sobą.
After a preposition you must use the long form: do siebie, o sobie, ze sobą - never do się.
siebie always looks at the subject
Choose siebie when the object is the same person as the subject. If it is a different person, use a normal personal pronoun (Lesson 19):
- Anna widzi siebie (w lustrze) = Anna sees herself.
- Anna widzi ją = Anna sees her (some other woman).
Reflexive-possessive swój
swój is the reflexive possessive (“one’s own”). Use it when the possessor is the subject of the clause - for any person:
- Kocham swój dom = I love my (own) house.
- (Ty) kochasz swój dom = You love your (own) house.
- Ona kocha swój dom = She loves her (own) house.
It declines exactly like mój / twój and agrees with the thing possessed, not the possessor. Compare:
- Anna zabrała swój parasol = Anna took her own umbrella.
- Anna zabrała jej parasol = Anna took her (someone else’s) umbrella.
For 3rd person this distinction is obligatory: swój = own, jego/jej/ich = somebody else’s.
Forms & patterns
Declension of siebie
There is one set of forms for all persons, numbers and genders. Note: no nominative.
| Case | Long (stressed) form | Short (clitic) form |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative (mianownik) | - (none) | - |
| Genitive (dopełniacz) | siebie | się |
| Dative (celownik) | sobie | (sobie) |
| Accusative (biernik) | siebie | się |
| Instrumental (narzędnik) | sobą | - |
| Locative (miejscownik) | (o) sobie | - |
The short się exists only for the accusative/genitive; the other cases always use the long form.
siebie after prepositions
The preposition selects the case; the long form is compulsory:
| Preposition (+ case) | With siebie | English |
|---|---|---|
| dla (+ gen.) | dla siebie | for oneself |
| do (+ gen.) | do siebie | to/towards oneself (home) |
| od (+ gen.) | od siebie | away from oneself |
| ku / przeciw (+ dat.) | ku sobie / przeciw sobie | toward / against oneself |
| na (+ acc.) | na siebie | onto oneself |
| przed (+ instr.) | przed sobą | in front of oneself |
| za (+ instr.) | za sobą | behind oneself |
| z (+ instr.) | ze sobą | with oneself / along |
| nad (+ instr.) | nad sobą | over oneself |
| o (+ loc.) | o sobie | about oneself |
| w (+ loc.) | w sobie | within oneself |
| po (+ loc.) | po sobie | after oneself |
Declension of swój
Declines like mój / twój; the masculine accusative singular follows animacy (Lesson 9).
| Case | Masc. sg | Neut. sg | Fem. sg | Virile pl | Non-virile pl |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nominative | swój | swoje | swoja | swoi | swoje |
| Genitive | swojego | swojego | swojej | swoich | swoich |
| Dative | swojemu | swojemu | swojej | swoim | swoim |
| Accusative | swój / swojego | swoje | swoją | swoich | swoje |
| Instrumental | swoim | swoim | swoją | swoimi | swoimi |
| Locative | swoim | swoim | swojej | swoich | swoich |
(Masc. acc. sg = swój for inanimate, swojego for animate: mam swój bilet but widzę swojego brata.)
Examples
| Polski | English |
|---|---|

| Ona ciągle myśli tylko o sobie. | She constantly thinks only about herself. |
| Weź ze sobą parasol - będzie padać. | Take an umbrella with you - it is going to rain. |
| Zamknij drzwi za sobą. | Close the door behind you. |
| Mam przed sobą trudne zadanie. | I have a difficult task in front of me. |
| Widzę w lustrze samą siebie. | I see my very self in the mirror. |
| Opowiedz mi coś o sobie. | Tell me something about yourself. |
| Oni są ze sobą szczęśliwi. | They are happy with each other. |
| Adam zabrał swój komputer do pracy. | Adam took his (own) computer to work. |
| Dbajcie o swoje zdrowie. | Take care of your (own) health. |
Common mistakes
- Myślę o mnie -> Myślę o sobie - when the object equals the subject, use reflexive sobie, not the personal pronoun.
- Weź ze się parasol -> Weź ze sobą parasol - after a preposition you need the long form, never clitic się.
- dla się, o się, do się -> dla siebie, o sobie, do siebie - prepositions never take się.
- Anna wzięła jej parasol (meaning her own) -> Anna wzięła swój parasol - own possession by the subject needs swój, not jej.
- Kocham mój kraj (neutral) -> Kocham swój kraj - when the possessor is the subject, prefer swój over mój/twój.
- Sobie myślę o wakacjach -> Myślę sobie o wakacjach - the unstressed sobie of myślę sobie leans on the verb like a clitic and does not open the clause; keep the verb first.
- Ona nazywa się swoja Ewa -> Ona nazywa się Ewa - do not mix swój into fixed się-verbs; swój marks possession only.
Tips
- Memory hook for the case forms: siebie - sobie - siebie - sobą - sobie (Gen-Dat-Acc-Instr-Loc). There is no nominative, because you cannot “be” the subject and its object at once.
- Two-form rule: if a preposition or emphasis/contrast is involved, reach for the long form (siebie/sobie/sobą); otherwise the bare verb takes clitic się.
- Three high-frequency chunks to overlearn: ze sobą (with me/you/along), o sobie (about oneself), dla siebie (for oneself).
- For swój: ask “does the owner do the verb?” If yes, use swój; if the owner is someone else, use jego/jej/ich. This choice is optional for 1st/2nd person but obligatory in the 3rd.
- swój agrees with the noun it sits on (gender, number, case), exactly like mój - the possessor never shows on the word.
