Derivation & word formation
B2 Afleiding 44 / 48
In short
Dutch builds thousands of words from a small stock of roots by adding suffixes (endings that fix the word class and often the gender) and prefixes (front parts that change the meaning). Learn the patterns and you can guess gender, meaning and word class of words you have never seen.
The rule
Whereas compounding (lesson 43) glues whole words together, derivation (afleiding) attaches a meaningful particle that is not itself an independent word.
Noun-forming suffixes. Each suffix gives a predictable gender, so the ending tells you de or het:
| Suffix | From | Meaning | Gender | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| -ing | verb | action / result | de | regeren -> de regering |
| -heid | adjective | quality (abstract) | de | vrij -> de vrijheid |
| -teit | (loan) adj. | quality (abstract) | de | actief -> de activiteit |
| -schap | noun/adj. | state / collective | de or het | vriend -> de vriendschap; gezel -> het gezelschap |
| -er / -ster | verb | agent (m. / f.) | de | bakken -> de bakker / de bakster |
| -ij (-erij) | verb/noun | activity / place | de | bakken -> de bakkerij |
Note: nouns in -heid form their plural in -heden: de mogelijkheid -> de mogelijkheden.
Adjective-forming suffixes:
| Suffix | Rough meaning | Example | English |
|---|---|---|---|
| -ig | ”having X / -y” | zonnig, handig | sunny, handy |
| -lijk | ”-ly / -able” | vriendelijk, gevaarlijk | friendly, dangerous |
| -baar | ”can be X-ed” (passive potential) | eetbaar, leesbaar | edible, readable |
| -loos | ”without / -less” | werkloos, zinloos | unemployed, pointless |
| -isch | ”-ic / -ical” (loanwords) | logisch, praktisch | logical, practical |
| -achtig | ”-ish / -like” | roodachtig, reusachtig | reddish, gigantic |
Verb-forming prefixes be-, ver-, ont-, her- are inseparable: the stress falls on the stem, and the past participle takes no ge- (see lesson 28).
| Prefix | Core sense | Example | Participle |
|---|---|---|---|
| be- | makes a verb transitive / “do to” | antwoorden -> beantwoorden | beantwoord |
| ver- | change / transform (sometimes “wrong”) | taal (language) -> vertalen (translate) | vertaald |
| ont- | un- / de- / “start to” | dekken -> ontdekken (discover) | ontdekt |
| her- | re- / again | halen -> herhalen (repeat) | herhaald |
Nominalisation with het + infinitive. Any infinitive can become a neuter noun meaning “the -ing of”: het roken (smoking), het wachten (the waiting), het eten (eating / food). It is always het and can take adjectives: het vele lopen (all that walking).
Negative prefixes. Use on- to negate an adjective (onmogelijk, oneerlijk, ongezond). Use the hyphenated niet- to negate a noun or role (niet-roker, niet-leden) - and the occasional adjective where on- does not fit (niet-westers).

| betalen (verb) | -baar | betaalbaar | adjective |

| schrijven (verb) | her- | herschrijven | verb (inseparable) |
| spannen (verb) | ont- | ontspannen | verb (inseparable) |
| zwemmen (verb) | het + inf. | het zwemmen | noun (het) |

Common mistakes
- gebetaald, geverkocht -> betaald, verkocht - be-/ver-/ont-/her- are inseparable, so the participle gets no ge-.
- het regering, het mogelijkheid -> de regering, de mogelijkheid - the suffixes -ing/-heid/-teit/-er/-ij are always de.
- de waarheiden, de mogelijkheiden -> de waarheden, de mogelijkheden - plural of -heid is -heden.
- onroker; een niet-mogelijk plan -> niet-roker; een onmogelijk plan - on- negates adjectives, niet- negates nouns/roles (the separate word niet stays perfectly normal: dat is niet mogelijk).
- de lopen, de eten -> het lopen, het eten - a nominalised infinitive is always a het-word.
Tips
- Read the ending first: -ing/-heid/-teit/-schap/-er/-ij = a
denoun (most -schap exceptions like het gezelschap, het landschap you simply memorise). - Map the adjective suffixes to English: -baar = “-able”, -loos = “-less”, -achtig = “-ish”, -isch = “-ic” (and -isch is pronounced “-ies”).
- If a verb starts with be-, ver-, ont- or her-, the stress is on the stem and the participle never takes ge-: ont-DEKT, her-HAALD.
- Turn any action into a noun with het + infinitive (het wachten, het reizen) - handy for talking about activities in general.
- One learned suffix unlocks dozens of words at once, so collect words by pattern, not one by one.
