In short
Ordinal numbers (first, second, third…) say position or order. In Dutch you build them from the cardinal numbers (lesson 8): add -de for 2-19 and -ste from 20 up. Learn the three irregulars: eerste (1st), derde (3rd) and achtste (8th).
The rule
Take the cardinal number and add an ending:
- 2 to 19 -> add -de: twee -> tweede, vier -> vierde, tien -> tiende, twaalf -> twaalfde.
- 20 and higher -> add -ste: twintig -> twintigste, honderd -> honderdste, duizend -> duizendste.
Three forms break the pattern:
- 1st = eerste (not “eende”).
- 3rd = derde (not “driede”).
- 8th = achtste (just -ste, not “achtde”).
Ordinals are adjectives, so they usually follow de/het (or another determiner): de eerste dag, het derde huis, mijn tweede kans. Because they already end in -e, they don’t change further. Use them for dates, rankings/order, and floors. Once the noun is clear you can leave it out and keep just the determiner + ordinal: Het eerste antwoord is fout, het tweede klopt. In a date the month works the same way: De cursus loopt van 4 maart tot de achttiende.

Abbreviation: write the figure + e -> 1e, 2e, 3e, 8e, 20e, 100e (forms ending in -ste may also be written 8ste, 20ste).

Common mistakes
- driede -> derde - 3rd is irregular; never “driede”.
- achtde -> achtste - 8 takes -ste, not -de, like the 20+ group.
- eende / eenste -> eerste - 1st has its own form.
- twintigde -> twintigste - from 20 upward the ending is -ste, not -de.
- de eerste verdieping is de begane grond -> de begane grond is the ground floor; de eerste verdieping is one floor up. Don’t translate American “first floor” word-for-word.
Tips
- Memory hook: -de for the small numbers (2-19), -ste once you hit the “big” twintig and beyond.
- Spoken dates can drop the ordinal: “drie mei” (cardinal) and “de derde mei” (ordinal) are both fine; in writing you just put the figure: 3 mei.
- Just three irregulars to memorise: eerste, derde, achtste. Everything else follows the rule.
- Compound ordinals add the ending only to the last word, written as one word: eenentwintig -> eenentwintigste.
