In short

Cardinal numbers tell how many. Dutch puts the unit before the ten (eenentwintig = “one-and-twenty”), writes numbers under 1000 as one word, and uses a comma for decimals. They power telling time, dates, prices, age and phone numbers.

The rule

Learn 0-20 by heart, then the tens. From 21 up, build numbers as unit + en + ten: eenentwintig, vijfenveertig, negenennegentig. Add a trema (¨) when two vowels would clash: twee + en -> tweeën-, drie + en -> drieën-. Above 100 you stack the parts: honderd, tweehonderd, honderdvijfentwintig. Numbers below 1000 are written as one word. Decimals use komma, not a point: 3,5 = drie komma vijf. The word één (one) gets accents only to avoid confusion with een (a/an).

Common mistakes

twintig-een -> eenentwintig - the unit comes before the ten, joined by en.
tachentig -> tachtig - 80 is just tachtig (no extra -en-); also tachtig sounds like “tach-” not “acht-”.
half drie = 3:30 -> half drie = 2:30 - half X means “half an hour toward X”, so it’s X minus 30.
3.14 / drie punt veertien -> 3,14 / drie komma veertien - Dutch uses a comma for decimals (and a point/space for thousands).
twee euros / tien jaren oud -> twee euro / tien jaar oud - euro and jaar stay singular after a number in prices and age.

Tips

Memorize 0-12 plus the tens as fixed blocks; everything else is just unit + en + ten clicked together.
Trema trick: add ¨ only when a vowel meets a vowel - tweeëntwintig, drieënveertig; vierentwintig needs none.
For time, anchor on half drie = 2:30. Then count around it: tien voor half drie (2:20) and tien over half drie (2:40).
Saying prices fast: drop euro in the middle - drie vijftig (€3,50), één negenennegentig (€1,99).
