Advanced scalar and role particles
C1 고급 조사 조차·마저·은/는커녕·(으)로서 65 / 68
In short
Beyond plain 도 (too) and 만 (only), C1 Korean has a set of nuanced particles: scalar 조차/마저/까지 (three shades of even), the dismissive 은/는커녕 (far from X, not even Y), and the near-identical (으)로서 (in the role of) vs (으)로써 (by means of). Most of them carry a hidden constraint - a negative-polarity requirement or a formal register - that you must respect.
The rule
Step 1 - Three shades of even: 조차, 마저, 까지
All three attach directly to a noun and, like 도, push out 이/가, 은/는 and 을/를 (you never write *이름을조차) - unlike 만, which happily stacks with them (너만을, 이것만은). They differ in attitude:
- 조차 - even the most basic/expected thing, and it is negative-leaning: it almost always sits in a sentence about something missing or failing. 이름조차 몰라요 (ireumjocha mollayo) - doesn’t even know the name.
- 마저 - even the last remaining one too, usually with regret: the final member you were counting on also goes. 너마저 떠났어요 (neomajeo tteonasseoyo) - even you left me.
- 까지 - even, going as far as, reaching an extreme end point. This one is neutral - it works in welcome climaxes as well as unwelcome ones. 집까지 팔았어요 (jipkkaji parasseoyo) - he even sold his house.
Step 2 - Dismissal: 은/는커녕
Noun + 은/는커녕 means far from X, not even Y - it rejects X as absurdly out of reach and then names something much smaller that also failed. It selects 은 after a 받침 and 는 after a vowel, exactly like the topic particle. The second clause is downgraded and usually negated with 도:
- 밥은커녕 물도 못 마셨어요. (Babeunkeonyeong muldo mot masyeosseoyo.) - Far from eating, I couldn’t even drink water.
Step 3 - Role vs instrument: (으)로서 and (으)로써
Both grow out of the particle (으)로, and both take 으로 after a 받침, 로 after a vowel, and 로 after a ㄹ-final noun (like 서울로) - never *으 after ㄹ.
- (으)로서 = as, in the capacity/role of. 교사로서 (gyosaroseo) - as a teacher.
- (으)로써 = by means of, with, through. 대화로써 (daehwarosseo) - through dialogue.
Mnemonic: 로써 hides 쓰다 (to use), so 로써 = by using = instrument; 로서 is your status.
Step 4 - The rest of the toolkit
A cluster of smaller particles rounds out C1 fluency (see the table below): 대로 (as per), 뿐 (only, merely), 치고(는) (for a …, considering), 에다가 (onto, in addition), (이)라도 (… at least), (이)든지 (any-, no matter), 씩 (each, at a time), (이)나마 (even just, though inadequate), (이)야말로 (precisely, of all things). Two subject-marking specials also belong here: 에서 can mark an organization as subject (정부에서 발표했어요 - the government announced), and honorific 께서 replaces 이/가 for an honored subject (할아버지께서 오셨어요). Finally, formal 마는 attaches to a full sentence ending as a concession (가고 싶습니다마는 시간이 없습니다 - I’d like to go, but there’s no time), and 만은 = 만 + 은 stresses a single exception (이것만은 포기할 수 없어요 - this one thing I can’t give up).
Forms & patterns
Scalar particles compared (all replace 이/가·은/는·을/를):
| Particle | Force | Polarity | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 도 | also, too | neutral | 저도 가요 (jeodo gayo) I’ll go too |
| 까지 | even, as far as (extreme) | either | 집까지 팔았어요 (jipkkaji parasseoyo) even sold the house |
| 조차 | even (the bare minimum) | negative-leaning | 이름조차 몰라요 (ireumjocha mollayo) doesn’t even know the name |
| 마저 | even the last one too | regret / unwelcome | 너마저 떠났어요 (neomajeo tteonasseoyo) even you left |
| 은/는커녕 | far from X, not even Y | strongly negative | 밥은커녕 물도 (babeunkeonyeong muldo) not even water, let alone food |
Allomorph selection (note how ㄹ splits the two families):
The smaller particles at a glance:
| Particle | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 대로 | as per, in accordance with | 말한 대로 (malhan daero) as (you) said; noun-bound: 약속대로 (yaksokdaero) |
| 뿐 | only, merely | 이것뿐이에요 (igeotppunieyo) this is all; 뿐만 아니라 (ppunman anira) not only |
| 치고(는) | for a …, considering | 겨울치고 따뜻해요 (gyeoulchigo ttatteutaeyo) warm for winter |
| 에다가 | onto, in addition to | 공책에다가 써요 (gongchaegedaga sseoyo) write it in the notebook |
| (이)라도 | … at least, even … | 물이라도 마셔요 (murirado masyeoyo) at least drink water |
| (이)든지 | any-, no matter which | 언제든지 오세요 (eonjedeunji oseyo) come anytime |
| 씩 | each, apiece, at a time (strictly a suffix, 접미사) | 하나씩 주세요 (hanassik juseyo) give one each |
| (이)나마 | even just (though inadequate) | 조금이나마 도움이 돼요 (jogeuminama doumi dwaeyo) it helps even a little |
| (이)야말로 | precisely, … of all | 이것이야말로 진짜예요 (igeosiyamallo jinjjayeyo) this is the real thing |
Examples
- 그 사람은 제 이름조차 몰라요. (Geu sarameun je ireumjocha mollayo.) - That person doesn’t even know my name.
- 친한 친구마저 저를 떠났어요. (Chinhan chingumajeo jeoreul tteonasseoyo.) - Even my close friend left me.
- 그 사람은 집까지 팔았어요. (Geu sarameun jipkkaji parasseoyo.) - He even went so far as to sell his house.
- 밥은커녕 물도 못 마셨어요. (Babeunkeonyeong muldo mot masyeosseoyo.) - Far from eating, I couldn’t even drink water.
- 교사로서 최선을 다해요. (Gyosaroseo choeseoneul dahaeyo.) - As a teacher, I do my best.
- 대화로써 문제를 풀어요. (Daehwarosseo munjereul pureoyo.) - We solve problems through dialogue.
- 계획한 대로 진행해요. (Gyehoekan daero jinhaenghaeyo.) - We proceed as planned.
- 매일 조금씩 공부해요. (Maeil jogeumssik gongbuhaeyo.) - I study a little bit each day.
- 시간이 없으면 이메일이라도 보내세요. (Sigani eopseumyeon imeirirado bonaeseyo.) - If you have no time, at least send an email.
- 정부에서 새 정책을 발표했어요. (Jeongbueseo sae jeongchaegeul balpyohaesseoyo.) - The government announced a new policy.
Common mistakes
- 밥는커녕 물도 못 마셨어요. (Babneunkeonyeong muldo mot masyeosseoyo.) -> 밥은커녕 물도 못 마셨어요. (Babeunkeonyeong muldo mot masyeosseoyo.) - 은/는커녕 picks its allomorph by the preceding 받침 just like the topic particle. 밥 ends in ㅂ, so it must be 은커녕.
- 대화로서 문제를 풀어요. (Daehwaroseo munjereul pureoyo.) -> 대화로써 문제를 풀어요. (Daehwarosseo munjereul pureoyo.) - 로서 is a role/status; a tool or method is 로써. Remember 로써 = 쓰다, by using.
- 선물조차 받아서 기뻐요. (Seonmuljocha badaseo gippeoyo.) -> 선물까지 받아서 기뻐요. (Seonmulkkaji badaseo gippeoyo.) - 조차 is negative-leaning and clashes with a happy climax; for a welcome extreme use 까지.
- 밥은커녕 물을 많이 마셨어요. (Babeunkeonyeong mureul mani masyeosseoyo.) -> 밥은커녕 물도 못 마셨어요. (Babeunkeonyeong muldo mot masyeosseoyo.) - After 은/는커녕 the second clause must be something even lesser, normally negated with 도 - not a positive abundance.
- 계획한대로 진행해요. (Gyehoekandaero jinhaenghaeyo.) -> 계획한 대로 진행해요. (Gyehoekan daero jinhaenghaeyo.) - After a verb modifier, bound-noun 대로 takes a space. It attaches solid only to a plain noun: 약속대로.
Tips
- A ladder for even: 도 < 까지 < 조차 < 마저. 도 is neutral, 까지 marks an extreme (either direction), 조차 adds even the bare minimum failed (negative), and 마저 adds the last one I had left, too (regret). When you mean “not even ___”, reach for 조차.
- 로써 = 쓰다 (to use). The double 써 borrows the verb to use, so 로써 is always the instrument or method; 로서 is the hat you are wearing (교사로서, 부모로서, 친구로서).
- ㄹ splits the two particle families. 은/는커녕 treats a ㄹ-final noun as a consonant (물은커녕), but (으)로서/(으)로써 treats it like a vowel and drops the 으 (딸로서, 말로써) - the same rule that gives 서울로, not *서울으로.
- Register: these lean formal or literary. 로써, 은/는커녕, (이)야말로, (이)나마 and 마는 belong to writing and careful speech; casual speech prefers plain 로, 도, or 는 무슨. 에서-as-subject and 께서 are the subject markers you meet in news, reports and announcements.
