Por and para

B1 Por y para 33 / 49

In short

Both por and para often translate as English “for,” but they split the work: para points forward — purpose, destination, deadline, recipient — while por points back or through — cause, exchange, duration, and movement along/through.

The rule

Picture an arrow. para = the goal the arrow points at. por = the reason behind it or the path it travels through.

Use para for the goal / destination:

  • Purpose (para + infinitive = “in order to”): Estudio para aprobar.
  • Employer (“work for”): Trabaja para una empresa alemana.

Use por for the cause / route / exchange:

  • Cause / motive (“because of”): Lo hago por ti.
(a stretch you plan or agree on; for one that simply lasted, Spain prefers durante or nothing — Estudié durante dos horas. Latin America uses por for both.)
  • Movement through / along: Paseamos por el parque.
  • Means (“by”): Te llamo por teléfono.
  • Agent in the passive (ser + participle, agreeing with the subject): La novela fue escrita por Cervantes.

Common mistakes

  • Salgo por Madrid -> Salgo para Madrid - the destination of movement is para.
  • Es demasiado caro por mí -> Es demasiado caro para mí - “in my opinion / for me” is para.

Tips

  • One-line test: para = destination/goal (the point) · por = motive/route (the reason, the path).
  • “In order to” is always para + infinitive. If you can insert “in order to,” use para.
  • Watch the pair: trabajar para (be employed by) vs trabajar por (for the sake of): Trabajo para el banco / Lo hago por mis hijos.
  • Movement: toward a destination = para (salgo para casa); through or around a place = por (voy por el parque).
  • Questions keep the preposition in front of the question word: ¿Para quién es?, ¿Para qué sirve?, ¿Para cuándo lo necesitas?, ¿Por dónde se va? — never ¿Quién es para?
  • Memorize the set phrases as units — por favor, por eso, por fin, para siempre — don’t re-derive them.
