Learned noun and adjective classes
C1 Λόγια ουσιαστικά και επίθετα 62 / 66
In short
Everyday Greek nouns and adjectives were covered in lessons 14, 28-31 and 49. Those lessons deliberately left out a handful of paradigms that look irregular but are in fact a tidy, closed set inherited from the learned (λόγια) written tradition. You meet them constantly in newspapers, law, science and administration: ο συγγραφέας with its plural οι συγγραφείς, the neuters in -ος such as το κράτος with genitive του κράτους and plural τα κράτη, a few survivals like το οξύ / του οξέος and η πειθώ / της πειθούς, and the two-ending (δικατάληκτα) adjectives ο/η διεθνής, το διεθνές. Add the three verbal adjective suffixes -τός, -σιμος/-ιμος and the obligation form -τέος (η εξεταστέα ύλη) and you can read a formal Greek text without stumbling. Participles are a separate story and belong to lesson 64.
The rule
1. Masculine nouns in -έας. They are mostly agent nouns: ο συγγραφέας “writer, author”, ο γραμματέας “secretary”, ο γονέας “parent”, ο ιππέας “horseman”, ο τομέας “sector, field”, ο ιερέας “priest”, ο προβολέας “projector, floodlight”. The singular behaves like any -ας noun (του συγγραφέα), but the plural is the learned one: nominative and accusative -είς, genitive -έων. So the nominative plural is οι συγγραφείς, never *οι συγγραφέες, and the accusative plural is identical to it: τους συγγραφείς.
2. Neuter nouns in -ος. το κράτος “state”, το μέλος “member”, το έθνος “nation”, το μέγεθος “size, magnitude”, το λάθος “mistake”, το βάθος “depth”, το ενδιαφέρον is not one of these but το ύψος, το πλήθος, το είδος, το τέλος are. Two endings matter: genitive singular -ους (του κράτους) and plural -η with genitive -ών (τα κράτη, των κρατών). The genitive plural is always stressed on the ending, and where the singular is stressed on the third-from-last syllable the plural pulls the stress forward: το μέγεθος → τα μεγέθη → των μεγεθών.
3. Learned singletons. A small group keeps ancient stems: το οξύ “acid” (του οξέος, τα οξέα), το ήμισυ “half” - not really a noun but the neuter of the learned adjective ήμισυς, ημίσεια, ήμισυ, and alive only in fixed phrases (το έτερον ήμισυ, κατά το ήμισυ, εξ ημισείας, η αρχή είναι το ήμισυ του παντός) - το ήπαρ “liver” (του ήπατος - anatomical register; everyday Greek says το συκώτι), το πυρ “fire” (του πυρός, τα πυρά - military and figurative), and the feminine η πειθώ “persuasion” (της πειθούς), which has the company of η ηχώ “echo” (genitive της ηχούς or της ηχώς) and a few proper names. They are defective: learn the cells that actually occur rather than a full ancient chart.
4. Two-ending adjectives in -ης/-ης/-ες (δικατάληκτα). Masculine and feminine share one form, the neuter differs: ο διεθνής οργανισμός, η διεθνής κοινότητα, το διεθνές δίκαιο. The genitive singular is -ούς for all three genders (του/της διεθνούς), the plural nominative/accusative is -είς for masculine and feminine and -ή for the neuter, and the genitive plural ending is the same for all genders, -ων (accented on the ending in almost every member: των διεθνών, των ακριβών, των θορυβωδών; πλήρης is the exception that keeps its own accent: των πλήρων). Members of the class: ακριβής “exact”, συνεχής “continuous”, σαφής “clear”, ασφαλής “safe”, ευγενής “noble”, ειλικρινής “sincere”, επιμελής “diligent”, συνεπής “consistent”, πλήρης “full”, plus the whole family in -ώδης (θορυβώδης “noisy”, ογκώδης “bulky”).
5. Verbal adjectives. Three suffixes turn a verb into an adjective and all three decline like ordinary -ος adjectives (lesson 14):
- -τός states that the action has been or can be done: γραπτός “written”, ορατός “visible”, φορητός “portable”, ανεκτός “tolerable”, αγαπητός “dear”.
- -σιμος / -ιμος states possibility or suitability: φαγώσιμος “edible”, καύσιμος “combustible” (τα καύσιμα “fuel”), χρήσιμος “useful”, ωφέλιμος “beneficial”, νόμιμος “lawful”, κατορθώσιμος “achievable”.
- -τέος states obligation - “which must be …”. It is purely formal: η εξεταστέα ύλη “the syllabus to be examined”, η διδακτέα ύλη “the syllabus to be taught”, ο πληρωτέος φόρος “the tax payable”, plus the arithmetic terms ο προσθετέος, ο διαιρετέος.

Learned singletons. A dash marks a cell that the modern language does not use; a bracketed form is recorded but rare. ήμισυ is the emptiest of them: outside the fixed phrases only the bare neuter occurs, and its one oblique survival is the fossil εξ ημισείας.

Common mistakes
- οι συγγραφέες -> οι συγγραφείς - nouns in -έας do not add -ες; their learned plural is -είς, and it doubles as the accusative (τους συγγραφείς).
- των κράτων -> των κρατών - the genitive plural of neuters in -ος is -ών and is always stressed on that ending.
- του κράτου -> του κράτους - the genitive singular is -ους; -ου belongs to το βιβλίο, not to το κράτος.
- τα λάθια -> τα λάθη - το λάθος is a neuter in -ος like το κράτος, not a noun in -ι, so the plural is -η.
- του διεθνή προβλήματος -> του διεθνούς προβλήματος - διεθνή is the accusative masculine/feminine; the genitive of a δικατάληκτο adjective ends in -ούς for every gender.
- οι διεθνής οργανισμοί -> οι διεθνείς οργανισμοί - the plural of -ής is -είς; the singular form cannot stand next to a plural noun.
- της πειθώς -> της πειθούς - πειθώ makes its genitive in -ούς and in nothing else. Its neighbour η ηχώ is freer: both της ηχούς and της ηχώς are current.
- των οξών -> των οξέων - το οξύ keeps the learned stem οξε- outside the nominative and accusative singular.
Tips
- Two endings do all the work in the neuter -ος class: -ους in the genitive singular and -η / -ών in the plural. If you can say το κράτος, του κράτους, τα κράτη, των κρατών, you can decline μέλος, έθνος, μέγεθος, λάθος, ύψος, είδος and πλήθος without thinking.
- Watch the stress, not just the letters: μέγεθος but μεγέθη and μεγεθών. The three-syllable rule from lesson 27 is what moves it.
- These words are frequent enough to attract a clitic, so remember the second accent: το μέγεθός του, το έθνος μας (no extra accent here - έθνος is only two syllables).
- A quick test for δικατάληκτα: if the neuter of an adjective ends in -ές, the genitive is -ούς and the masculine/feminine plural is -είς. διεθνές → διεθνούς → διεθνείς.
- A few members of the class are stressed on the stem, not on the ending. πλήρης and the whole -ώδης family leave the accent where it is (το πλήρες, το θορυβώδες, το ογκώδες); what is worth memorising there is the genitive plural των πλήρων, which stays on the stem while θορυβωδών, ογκωδών move to the ending. In the compounds of the κακοήθης type the neuter singular really does pull the accent back a syllable: συνήθης → το σύνηθες, αυτάρκης → το αύταρκες, κακοήθης → το κακόηθες, επιμήκης → το επίμηκες. The rest stress the ending throughout (ακριβής → ακριβές, των ακριβών).
- Keep the -τέος forms for formal writing only. In speech you say η ύλη που θα εξεταστεί, τα χρήματα που πρέπει να πληρωθούν - να + subjunctive (lesson 25), not an adjective.
- If you are unsure whether a plural is learned, check the singular ending first: -έας and neuter -ος always are; a noun in -ι or -ος masculine never is.
