Further and compound prepositions

In short

Beyond the everyday σε, από, με, για, Modern Greek has a second set of prepositions — ως/έως, μέχρι, χωρίς/δίχως, προς, κατά, παρά, σαν, αντί (για), εκτός από — and they all govern the accusative.

Everything more precise than that is built from an adverb plus a linker: δίπλα σε, κάτω από, μαζί με. The adverb alone says where; the adverb plus its linker says where relative to what. English hides this (“next to”, “in front of” are compounds too), so the trap is not the meaning but the missing linker: δίπλα στον Νίκο, never δίπλα τον Νίκο.

Two extra habits complete the picture: σε fuses with the article (κοντά στη θάλασσα, πάνω στο τραπέζι), and with a pronoun these same words take a weak genitive clitic instead — δίπλα μου, μαζί της, μπροστά μας.

The rule

1. The remaining prepositions take the accusative. Like the basic ones, none of them ever takes a genitive in ordinary demotic; the genitive versions you meet in formal writing (αντί στεφάνων, κατά του νόμου) are learned survivals and belong to lesson 63.

2. Compound prepositions = adverb + σε / από / με. The adverb is a real adverb: it can stand alone with nothing after it. Add a complement and you must add the linker that word selects. A few take either linker with a small shift of sense: πάνω σε = resting on (contact), πάνω από = above (no contact), and also “more than”: πάνω από εκατό άτομα.

3. σε fuses with the definite article. σε + τον → στον, σε + την → στην/στη, σε + το → στο, and likewise in the plural. The compound is written as two words plus the fused form: μέσα στο σπίτι, ανάμεσα στα δέντρα.

4. With a pronoun, the same words take a weak genitive clitic. Greek does not say δίπλα σε εμένα as the default; it says δίπλα μου. The strong form is available for contrast (δίπλα σ’ εμένα, όχι σ’ εσένα), and the local words in από have their own idiom: από πάνω μου, από κάτω μας, από πίσω σου. Only the non-local πριν από, μετά από, εκτός από keep the strong accusative: πριν από μένα, εκτός από εμένα; μαζί takes the clitic (μαζί μου), with μαζί με εμένα kept for emphasis.

5. Adverb against preposition. Κάθισε δίπλα (“sit next to me / nearby”, complement understood) versus Κάθισε δίπλα στον Νίκο. Nothing changes in the word itself — only whether a complement follows.

6. σαν against ως. σαν compares (“like, as if”); before a noun that carries the definite article it takes the accusative: Τρέχει σαν τον αέρα. With a bare noun it simply matches the term compared, usually the subject: Σου μιλώ σαν φίλος. ως states a real capacity or role (“as, in the capacity of”) and its noun agrees in case with the word it describes, which is normally the nominative subject: Δουλεύει ως δάσκαλος.

Note the second accent on απέναντί μου: απέναντι is stressed on its third-from-last syllable, so the clitic forces an extra accent on the final one. The same happens with ανάμεσά μας. Words stressed on the last two syllables (δίπλα, κοντά, μαζί, πίσω, γύρω, μπροστά) need no second accent.

Common mistakes

  • Κάθισε δίπλα τον Νίκο. -> Κάθισε δίπλα στον Νίκο. A compound preposition is incomplete without its linker; δίπλα on its own is only an adverb.
  • Το βιβλίο είναι πάνω το τραπέζι. -> Το βιβλίο είναι πάνω στο τραπέζι. Same gap: πάνω needs σε (fused into στο), or από for “above”.
  • Μένει μακριά το κέντρο. -> Μένει μακριά από το κέντρο. μακριά, έξω, κάτω, πίσω and μετά select από, not σε.
  • δίπλα εμένα -> δίπλα μου (or, for contrast, δίπλα σ’ εμένα). With a pronoun these words take the weak genitive clitic, not a bare strong form.
  • μαζί με μου -> μαζί μου. The clitic already contains the relation; the linker με is dropped before it.
  • πριν από μου -> πριν από μένα. πριν από, μετά από and εκτός από keep the strong accusative pronoun instead of a clitic (the local words in από do take the clitic: από πάνω μου).
  • Μένω κοντά στη σταθμό. -> Μένω κοντά στον σταθμό. ο σταθμός is masculine: the masculine στον keeps its -ν, which is what tells it apart from the feminine στη(ν).
  • Πάμε στη Αθήνα. -> Πάμε στην Αθήνα. στην/την keep the -ν before a vowel and before κ, π, τ, ξ, ψ, γκ, μπ, ντ, τσ, τζ.
  • Δουλεύει σαν οδηγός. -> Δουλεύει ως οδηγός. In careful usage a real job takes ως; σαν suggests he merely resembles one (speech does use σαν here, but ως is the safe choice).
  • Είναι ψηλός σαν ο πατέρας του. -> Είναι ψηλός σαν τον πατέρα του. When the noun after σαν carries the definite article, both go into the accusative.

Tips

  • Learn each compound as a two-word unit — “δίπλα σε”, “κάτω από”, “μαζί με” — exactly as you learn English “next to”. Storing the adverb alone is what produces the missing linker later.
  • A rough rule of thumb: contact and enclosure take σε (πάνω σε, μέσα σε, δίπλα σε, κοντά σε, ανάμεσα σε), while separation and vantage take από (κάτω από, έξω από, μακριά από, πίσω από, γύρω από, μετά από). μπροστά and απέναντι also accept σε (μπροστά στο σχολείο, απέναντι στην τράπεζα); γύρω keeps από for place, because γύρω σε means “about, approximately” (γύρω στις πέντε).
  • Swapping a noun for a pronoun changes the shape of the phrase, not just the word: κοντά στον Νίκο → κοντά του. Practise the pairs together so the switch becomes automatic.
  • For the από-compounds the idiomatic pronoun pattern puts από first: από πάνω μου, από κάτω μας, από πίσω σου — very common in speech.
  • Say the phrase aloud before writing στη or στην: if the next word begins with a vowel or with κ, π, τ, ξ, ψ, γκ, μπ, ντ, τσ, τζ, the -ν stays (στην Αθήνα, στην πόρτα) — otherwise it goes (στη θάλασσα, στη δουλειά).
  • Test ως against σαν with the question “is it true?” — if the person really holds that role, use ως; if it is only a comparison, use σαν.
  • πάνω από and μέσα σε double as quantity and time expressions: πάνω από χίλια ευρώ, μέσα σε δύο μέρες. Same forms, no new rule.
