Extended participial attributes & passive alternatives

C1 Erweiterte Partizipialattribute & Passiversatz 52 / 52

In short

An extended participial attribute packs a whole participle phrase between the article and the noun, doing the job of a relative clause. It is mostly a reading skill of formal written German. Separately, passive alternatives (sein + zu, sich lassen, man, -bar adjectives) let you express a passive idea without the werden-passive.

The rule

Extended participial attribute (das erweiterte Partizipialattribut). A participle used as an adjective (lesson 46) can carry its own modifiers - objects, prepositional phrases, adverbs. In German this whole bundle is placed in front of the noun, framed by the article on the left and the declined participle on the right:

das von dem berühmten Architekten im 19. Jahrhundert erbaute Haus = the house that was built by the famous architect in the 19th century

The same idea as a relative clause would be: das Haus, das von dem berühmten Architekten im 19. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde. The participle agrees with the noun exactly like a normal adjective (lesson 25): here erbaute = neuter, nominative, weak ending after das.

Reading strategy: (1) spot the article, (2) jump straight to the head noun on the right, (3) then unpack the material in between, (4) and read the participle as a mini relative clause. This structure is common in academic, legal and journalistic prose and rare in speech.

Which participle? Partizip II (transitive verbs) = passive / completed: das reparierte Auto. Partizip I (-end) = active / ongoing: die spielenden Kinder. Partizip I + zu (Gerundiv) = passive necessity/possibility: die noch zu lösende Aufgabe (= the task that still has to be solved).

Passive alternatives (Passiversatzformen). Four common ways to dodge the werden-passive (lesson 38):

FormMeaningExample
sein + zu + Infinitivmust / can be doneDas ist noch zu machen.
sich lassen + Infinitivcan be doneDas lässt sich machen.
man + Aktivone does itMan kann das machen.
Adjective on -bar-able / -ibleDas ist machbar / lösbar.

The participle takes normal adjective endings (lesson 25):

TypeParticipleExample
Partizip II (passive)repariert -> repariertedas reparierte Auto
Partizip I (active)spielend -> spielendendie spielenden Kinder
Partizip I + zu (Gerundiv)lösend -> zu lösendedie zu lösende Aufgabe

sein + zu with a separable verb: zu slips between prefix and stem -> Der Antrag ist einzureichen (einreichen).

Common mistakes

  • das von ihm gebaut Haus -> das von ihm gebaute Haus - the participle still needs an adjective ending.
  • das Haus von dem Architekten erbaute -> das von dem Architekten erbaute Haus - the whole phrase sits before the noun, not after it (English order).
  • Das lässt machen. -> Das lässt sich machen. - sich lassen is reflexive; never drop the sich.
  • Das ist machen. -> Das ist zu machen. - the sein + zu form needs zu and carries a passive (must/can) meaning.
  • die spielten Kinder (a finite Präteritum form) -> die spielenden Kinder (Partizip I) - an attribute must be a participle, and an active, ongoing action takes Partizip I (spielend), not Partizip II (gespielt).

Tips

  • Read right-to-left: lock onto the head noun first, then peel back the phrase - the declined participle is your signpost that the noun is coming.
  • These attributes are for understanding texts; in your own writing a clear relative clause (lesson 39) is usually the better, more natural choice.
  • sein + zu = müssen/können + passive; sich lassen ≈ können + passive. Use them to vary style and avoid endless werden-passives.
  • A handy -bar test: many transitive verbs form an adjective meaning “-able”: lösen -> lösbar, essen -> essbar, lesen -> lesbar, trinken -> trinkbar.
