Coordinating conjunctions
A1 Nebenordnende Konjunktionen 17 / 52
In short
Coordinating conjunctions join two equal main clauses without changing the word order: the verb stays in position 2. The five A1 words are und, aber, oder, denn, sondern (mnemonic: ADUSO). Use sondern only after a negation (“not X, but rather Y”).
The rule
A coordinating conjunction sits in “position 0” - in front of the second clause but outside it. It does not count as the first sentence element, so the verb of the second clause stays in position 2, exactly as if the clause stood alone.
| Position 0 | Position 1 | Position 2 (verb) | … |
|---|---|---|---|
| - | Ich | trinke | Kaffee, |
| und | ich | esse | ein Brötchen. |
| aber | ich | esse | kein Brötchen. |
Compare with subordinating conjunctions (weil, dass - lesson 28), which push the verb to the end, and with conjunctive adverbs (deshalb - lesson 44), which sit in position 1 and force inversion (verb before subject).
| Type | Example | Effect on word order |
|---|---|---|
| Coordinating | Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank. | none - verb stays in V2 |
| Subordinating | Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. | verb to the end |
| Conjunctive adverb | Ich bin krank, deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause. | inversion (verb - subject) |
denn and weil both mean because, but denn keeps normal main-clause order and weil sends the verb to the end. denn also never starts a sentence.
The meanings:
- und = and (adds)
- oder = or (alternative)
- aber = but (contrast)
- denn = because / for (reason; main-clause order)
- sondern = but rather (corrects a negation: nicht X, sondern Y)
Forms & patterns
Comma rules:
| Conjunction | Comma before? |
|---|---|
| aber | yes - Ich komme, aber später. |
| sondern | yes - nicht heute, sondern morgen. |
| denn | yes - Ich gehe, denn es ist spät. |
| und | usually no (short clauses) |
| oder | usually no (short clauses) |
Paired connectors (Doppelkonjunktionen) - link two equal parts:
| Pair | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| sowohl … als auch | both … and | sowohl Tee als auch Kaffee |
| entweder … oder | either … or | entweder heute oder morgen |
| weder … noch | neither … nor | weder Fleisch noch Fisch |
Note: weder … noch is already negative, so do not add nicht or kein.
Unlike the ADUSO five, entweder may also take position 1 itself. Left in front of the clause it changes nothing (Entweder wir nehmen den Bus …); in position 1 the finite verb follows it and the subject comes after the verb: Entweder nehmen wir den Bus oder wir gehen zu Fuß. Both orders are correct, and the oder half keeps normal main-clause order either way.
Examples
| Deutsch | English |
|---|---|
| Ich lerne Deutsch und ich höre Musik. | I learn German and I listen to music. |
| Er möchte kommen, aber er hat keine Zeit. | He would like to come, but he has no time. |
| Trinkst du Tee oder möchtest du Wasser? | Do you drink tea or would you like water? |
| Wir bleiben heute zu Hause, denn es regnet stark. | We are staying home today, because it is raining hard. |
| Das ist nicht mein Buch, sondern dein Buch. | That is not my book, but rather your book. |
| Sie kauft sowohl Äpfel als auch Bananen. | She buys both apples and bananas. |
| Entweder wir nehmen den Bus oder wir gehen zu Fuß. | Either we take the bus or we walk. |
| Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Alkohol. | I drink neither coffee nor alcohol. |
Common mistakes
- Ich bin müde, denn ich gehe schlafen (wrong meaning) -> Ich gehe schlafen, denn ich bin müde - denn gives the reason; put the reason after denn.
- Ich bleibe, weil ich bin krank -> …, weil ich krank bin - weil sends the verb to the end; denn keeps V2.
- Nicht Tee, aber Kaffee -> Nicht Tee, sondern Kaffee - after a negation use sondern, not aber.
- Deshalb ich bleibe zu Hause -> Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause - deshalb causes inversion; coordinating conjunctions do not.
- Ich esse weder Fleisch nicht noch Fisch -> Ich esse weder Fleisch noch Fisch - weder … noch is already negative.
Tips
- Remember ADUSO (aber, denn, und, sondern, oder) - these five never change the word order.
- Quick test: if you can swap in a conjunctive adverb and the verb moves, it was not coordinating.
- sondern = “no, the other one”: it only works after nicht or kein; otherwise use aber.
- denn vs weil: same meaning, but denn = comfortable V2 order, weil = verb kicked to the end.
