there is / there are

A1 there is / there are 9 / 50

Kurz gefasst

there is / there are wird verwendet, um zu sagen, dass etwas existiert oder sich an einem Ort befindet. there is steht für eine Sache (oder ein unzählbares Nomen), there are für zwei oder mehr Dinge.

Die Regel

There + be führt etwas Neues ein. Das eigentliche Subjekt steht nach dem Verb, und das Verb richtet sich nach diesem Subjekt.

  • There is + Nomen im Singular oder unzählbares Nomen: There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
  • There are + Nomen im Plural: There are two cafes near my house.

Oft wird am Ende eine Ortsangabe hinzugefügt (on the table, near my house, in the box), aber nötig ist das nicht immer: There is a problem.

Verwechsle there nicht mit it. There sagt, dass etwas existiert. It identifiziert etwas oder verweist auf etwas bereits Bekanntes.

There is a problem. It is a big problem.
There is a dog in the garden. It is a friendly dog.

Häufige Fehler

  • There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk. – eine Sache braucht is.
  • There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes. – Plural braucht are.
  • It is a problem with the car. (um es einzuführen) -> There is a problem with the car. – verwende there, um zu sagen, dass etwas existiert.
  • There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats. / There are no seats. – eine Verneinung, nicht zwei.
  • Yes, there is a lift. (als Kurzantwort) -> Yes, there is. – das Nomen nicht wiederholen.

Tipps

  • Schau dir das Nomen direkt nach dem Verb an: eine Sache oder unzählbar -> is; zwei oder mehr -> are.
  • There’s no und there isn’t a / there aren’t any bedeuten dasselbe; no klingt etwas stärker.
  • There = „es existiert“; it = „ich spreche von dieser Sache“. Wenn du auf etwas bereits Bekanntes zeigen kannst, verwende it.
  • Für die Vergangenheit einfach is/are durch was/were ersetzen – der Rest bleibt gleich.
