there is / there are
A1 there is / there are 9 / 50
Em resumo
Usa-se there is / there are para dizer que algo existe ou está num lugar. Usa-se there is para uma coisa (ou um nome não contável) e there are para duas ou mais coisas.
Regra
There + be introduz algo novo.
- There is + nome singular ou nome não contável: There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
- There are + nome plural: There are two cafes near my house.
Acrescenta-se muitas vezes um lugar no fim (on the table, near my house, in the box), mas nem sempre é necessário: There is a problem.
Não confunda there com it. There diz que algo existe.
| Usa-se there (existência) | Usa-se it (identifica / remete) |
|---|---|
| There is a problem. | It is a big problem. |
| There is a dog in the garden. | It is a friendly dog. |

|---|---|---|
| Is there a lift? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn’t. |
| Are there any shops? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren’t. |
Não se repete o nome na resposta curta: Yes, there is. (não Yes, there is a lift.)
- There is a pen and two books on the desk. (primeiro elemento = a pen, singular)
- There are two books and a pen on the desk. (primeiro elemento = two books, plural)
Passado (mais na lição 14): usa-se there was (singular) e there were (plural): There was a party. There were many guests.
Exemplos

Erros frequentes
- There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk. — uma coisa exige is.
- There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes. — o plural exige are.
- It is a problem with the car. (para o introduzir) -> There is a problem with the car. — usa-se there para dizer que algo existe.
- There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats. / There are no seats. — uma só negação, não duas.
- Yes, there is a lift. (como resposta curta) -> Yes, there is. — não se repete o nome.
Dicas
- Repare no nome logo a seguir ao verbo: uma coisa ou não contável -> is; duas ou mais -> are.
- There’s no e there isn’t a / there aren’t any significam o mesmo; no soa um pouco mais forte.
- There = “existe”; it = “estou a falar desta coisa”.
- Para o passado, basta trocar is/are por was/were — tudo o resto fica igual.
