Past Perfect (+ czasy narracji)

B1 Past perfect (+ narrative tenses) 33 / 50

When I arrived, the train had already left. > (Najpierw pociąg odjechał. Potem ja przyjechałem. Past Perfect pokazuje, co było pierwsze.)

Forma jest taka sama dla każdej osoby (I / you / he / she / it / we / they): po prostu had + imiesłów bierny. Nie zmieniasz had dla he/she/it.

Past Perfect bardzo często pojawia się z tymi słowami: already, just, never, ever, by the time, after, before, because.

Słowo-sygnałPrzykład
alreadyThe film had already started when we sat down.
justShe had just woken up when the phone rang.
never / everIt was the best meal I had ever eaten.
by the timeBy the time we got there, everyone had gone home.
becauseHe was tired because he hadn’t slept.

Przy after / before kolejność czasowa jest już jasna z samego słowa, więc Past Perfect jest opcjonalny — Past Simple często wystarcza.

After he had finished, he left. = After he finished, he left.

Czasy narracji (szerszy obraz). W opowiadaniu te trzy czasy współdziałają:

CzasRola w opowiadaniuPrzykład
Past Simpległówne wydarzenia, w kolejnościI opened the door and walked in.
Past Continuousscena / tłoIt was raining and the wind was blowing.
Past Perfectwcześniejsze tłoThe house had been empty for years.

Past Perfect Continuous (krótka dygresja): had been + -ing podkreśla długość wcześniejszej czynności. Her eyes were red because she had been crying. Zob. Present Perfect Continuous po tę samą ideę o jeden poziom do przodu.

Formy i schematy

FormaSchematPrzykład
Twierdzeniepodmiot + had + imiesłów biernyThey had eaten before we arrived.
Forma ściągniętapodmiot + ‘d + imiesłów biernyThey’d eaten before we arrived.
Przeczeniepodmiot + had not / hadn’t + imiesłów biernyI hadn’t met her before.
PytanieHad + podmiot + imiesłów bierny …?Had you seen it before?
Krótka odpowiedźYes, … had. / No, … hadn’t.Yes, I had. / No, I hadn’t.

Uwaga: ‘d może znaczyć had lub would. Jeśli po nim stoi imiesłów bierny, to had (She’d left = She had left). Jeśli po nim stoi forma podstawowa czasownika, to would (She’d leave = She would leave).

Imiesłów bierny to trzecia forma czasownika: czasowniki regularne dodają -ed (work -> worked), nieregularnych trzeba się nauczyć (go -> gone, see -> seen, write -> written, take -> taken, break -> broken). Zob. Past Simple — lista czasowników nieregularnych.

Typowe błędy

  • When I arrived, the train left. -> When I arrived, the train had left.
  • I had went home. -> I had gone home.
  • He has finished before I called. -> He had finished before I called. — przeszłość przed przeszłością wymaga had, a nie has.
  • First I had cooked, then I had eaten. -> First I cooked, then I ate. — jeśli kolejność jest już jasna (then, first), Past Simple wystarcza; nie nadużywaj Past Perfect.
  • She’d leave when I arrived. (znaczące, że wyszła) -> She’d left when I arrived.

  • Had nigdy nie zmienia się przez osobę: I/you/he/she/it/we/they had — jedna forma dla wszystkich.
  • W opowiadaniach: Past Simple = wydarzenia, Past Continuous = scena, Past Perfect = retrospekcja.
