there is / there are
A1 there is / there are 9 / 50
W skrócie
Używaj there is / there are, aby powiedzieć, że coś istnieje lub znajduje się w jakimś miejscu. Używaj there is dla jednej rzeczy (lub rzeczownika niepoliczalnego) i there are dla dwóch lub więcej rzeczy.
Zasada
There + be wprowadza coś nowego. Prawdziwy podmiot stoi po czasowniku, a czasownik zgadza się właśnie z nim.
- There is + rzeczownik w liczbie pojedynczej lub rzeczownik niepoliczalny: There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
- There are + rzeczownik w liczbie mnogiej: There are two cafes near my house.
Często na końcu dodajemy miejsce (on the table, near my house, in the box), ale nie zawsze jest to konieczne: There is a problem.
Nie myl there z it. There oznacza, że coś istnieje. It identyfikuje rzecz lub odnosi się do czegoś, co już znamy.
| Użyj there (istnienie) | Użyj it (identyfikacja / odniesienie) |
|---|---|
| There is a problem. | It is a big problem. |
| There is a dog in the garden. | It is a friendly dog. |
Formy i schematy
Twierdzenie
| Podmiot po czasowniku | Forma | Przykład |
|---|---|---|
| liczba pojedyncza / niepoliczalny | there is (there’s) | There’s a key in the drawer. |
| liczba mnoga | there are | There are four chairs. |
Przeczenie
| Forma | Przykład |
|---|---|
| there is not / there isn’t | There isn’t a bus today. |
| there are not / there aren’t | There aren’t any seats. |
| there is no + rzeczownik | There’s no time. |
| there are no + rzeczownik | There are no windows. |
Pytania i krótkie odpowiedzi
| Pytanie | Krótka odpowiedź (tak) | Krótka odpowiedź (nie) |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a lift? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn’t. |
| Are there any shops? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren’t. |
Nie powtarzamy rzeczownika w krótkiej odpowiedzi: Yes, there is. (a nie Yes, there is a lift.)
Przy wyliczeniu czasownik zwykle zgadza się z pierwszym elementem:
- There is a pen and two books on the desk. (pierwszy element = a pen, liczba pojedyncza)
- There are two books and a pen on the desk. (pierwszy element = two books, liczba mnoga)
Formy ściągnięte: there’s jest bardzo częste zarówno w mowie, jak i w piśmie. There’re (zamiast there are) słyszy się w mowie, ale rzadko pojawia się w piśmie — pisz there are w pełnej formie.
Czas przeszły (więcej w lekcji 14): użyj there was (liczba pojedyncza) i there were (liczba mnoga): There was a party. There were many guests.
Przykłady
| English | Uwaga |
|---|---|
| There is a cat under the chair. | Jedna rzecz -> liczba pojedyncza is. |
| There’s some bread in the kitchen. | Rzeczownik niepoliczalny + forma ściągnięta there’s. |
| There are three messages for you. | Rzeczownik w liczbie mnogiej -> are. |
| There isn’t a clock in this room. | Przeczenie w liczbie pojedynczej. |
| There aren’t any clean cups. | Przeczenie w liczbie mnogiej z any. |
| There’s no reason to worry. | there’s no + rzeczownik = mocne „wcale nie ma”. |
| Is there a bank near here? | Pytanie ogólne, liczba pojedyncza. |
| There is a table and two lamps in the hall. | Wyliczenie: czasownik zgadza się z pierwszym elementem (a table). |
Typowe błędy
- There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk. — dla jednej rzeczy potrzebne jest is.
- There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes. — liczba mnoga wymaga are.
- It is a problem with the car. (żeby to wprowadzić) -> There is a problem with the car. — użyj there, aby powiedzieć, że coś istnieje.
- There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats. / There are no seats. — jedno przeczenie, a nie dwa.
- Yes, there is a lift. (jako krótka odpowiedź) -> Yes, there is. — nie powtarzaj rzeczownika.
Wskazówki
- Spójrz na rzeczownik zaraz po czasowniku: jedna rzecz lub niepoliczalny -> is; dwie lub więcej -> are.
- There’s no oraz there isn’t a / there aren’t any znaczą to samo; no brzmi trochę mocniej.
- There = „to istnieje”; it = „mówię o tej konkretnej rzeczy”. Jeśli możesz wskazać na coś już znanego, użyj it.
- Dla czasu przeszłego po prostu zamień is/are na was/were — wszystko inne zostaje bez zmian.
