there is / there are
A1 there is / there are 9 / 50
In het kort
Gebruik there is / there are om te zeggen dat iets bestaat of ergens is. Gebruik there is voor één ding (of een ontelbaar zelfstandig naamwoord) en there are voor twee of meer dingen.
De regel
There + be introduceert iets nieuws.
- There is + enkelvoudig zelfstandig naamwoord of ontelbaar zelfstandig naamwoord: There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
- There are + meervoudig zelfstandig naamwoord: There are two cafes near my house.
We voegen vaak een plaats toe aan het eind (on the table, near my house, in the box), maar dat is niet altijd nodig: There is a problem.
Verwar there niet met it. There zegt dat iets bestaat.
| Gebruik there (bestaat) | Gebruik it (identificeert / verwijst) |
|---|---|
| There is a problem. | It is a big problem. |
| There is a dog in the garden. | It is a friendly dog. |
Vormen en patronen
Bevestigend
| Onderwerp na het werkwoord | Vorm | Voorbeeld |
|---|---|---|
| enkelvoud / ontelbaar | there is (there’s) | There’s a key in the drawer. |
| meervoud | there are | There are four chairs. |
Ontkennend
| Vorm | Voorbeeld |
|---|---|
| there is not / there isn’t | There isn’t a bus today. |
| there are not / there aren’t | There aren’t any seats. |
| there is no + zelfstandig naamwoord | There’s no time. |
| there are no + zelfstandig naamwoord | There are no windows. |
Vragen en korte antwoorden
| Vraag | Kort antwoord (ja) | Kort antwoord (nee) |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a lift? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn’t. |
| Are there any shops? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren’t. |
(niet Yes, there is a lift.)
- There is a pen and two books on the desk. (eerste item = a pen, enkelvoud)
- There are two books and a pen on the desk. (eerste item = two books, meervoud)
Samentrekkingen: there’s komt heel vaak voor in spreek- en schrijftaal. There’re (voor there are) hoor je wel in gesproken taal, maar het is zeldzaam in geschreven taal — schrijf there are voluit.
Verleden tijd (meer in les 14): gebruik there was (enkelvoud) en there were (meervoud): There was a party. There were many guests.
Voorbeelden
| English | Opmerking |
|---|---|
| There is a cat under the chair. | Eén ding -> enkelvoud is. |
| There’s some bread in the kitchen. | Ontelbaar zelfstandig naamwoord + samentrekking there’s. |
| There are three messages for you. | Meervoudig zelfstandig naamwoord -> are. |
| There isn’t a clock in this room. | Ontkenning, enkelvoud. |
| There aren’t any clean cups. | Ontkenning, meervoud met any. |
| There’s no reason to worry. | there’s no + zelfstandig naamwoord = sterk „geen”. |
| Is there a bank near here? | Ja/nee-vraag, enkelvoud. |
| There is a table and two lamps in the hall. |
Veelgemaakte fouten
- There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk. — één ding vraagt om is.
- There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes. — meervoud vraagt om are.
- It is a problem with the car. (om iets te introduceren) -> There is a problem with the car.
- There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats. / There are no seats. — één ontkenning, niet twee.
- Yes, there is a lift. (als kort antwoord) -> Yes, there is. — herhaal het zelfstandig naamwoord niet.
Tips
- There’s no en there isn’t a / there aren’t any betekenen hetzelfde; no klinkt iets sterker.
