B1 Dependent prepositions 43 / 50
요약
많은 동사, 형용사, 명사는 항상 정해진 하나의 전치사와 함께 쓰입니다(depend on, good at, a reason for).
- 동사: depend on, listen to, wait for, belong to, agree with, apologise for, believe in, concentrate on, succeed in.
- 형용사: good/bad at, interested in, afraid/scared of, keen on, proud of, married to, similar to, different from, responsible for, worried about.
- 명사: a reason for, an increase in, the answer to, a solution to.
- 전치사 뒤에 오는 동사는 -ing형(동명사)을 쓰며, 원형부정사는 절대 쓰지 않습니다: interested in learning, good at cooking, instead of waiting. 전치사 뒤에 의문사절(what, why, how, whether…) It depends on what the manager decides.
이는 구동사(29강)와 겹치는 경우가 많습니다: look at(눈길을 두다), look for(찾으려 하다), look after(돌보다); think about(생각하다, 고려하다), think of(의견·생각을 가지다); arrive at(장소·건물), arrive in(도시·나라).
|---|---|---|
| 동사 + 전치사 + 명사 | She depends on her sister.
| 동사 + 전치사 + -ing | He apologised for being late. | “for be late”이 아님 |
| 형용사 + 전치사 + 명사 | I’m worried about the exam.
| 형용사 + 전치사 + -ing | They’re keen on travelling.
| 명사 + 전치사 + 명사 | There’s a reason for the delay.
| 명사 + 전치사 + -ing | The key to passing is practice.
| 동사/형용사 + 전치사 + 절 | I’m worried about why she left.
조심하세요: to이 전치사로 쓰일 때(look forward to, the answer to처럼), 다음에 오는 동사는 -ing형입니다: I look forward to meeting you. 반면 to가 부정사의 일부일 때(want to go)는 동사원형을 씁니다.

- depend of -> depend on — 이 동사는 on로 고정되어 있으며, of는 절대 쓰지 않습니다.
- good in maths -> good at maths — 기술이나 능력에는 at을 씁니다.
- interested in to travel -> interested in travelling — 전치사 뒤의 동사는 반드시 -ing형이어야 합니다.
- different than / different to -> different from — 표준 B1 형태는 from입니다(영국식 영어에서는 to도 쓰이지만, from를 익히세요).
- married with -> married to — 사람과 결혼할 때는 to을 쓰며, with는 쓰지 않습니다.
- listen the radio / wait the bus -> listen to the radio, wait for the bus — 전치사를 빠뜨리지 마세요.
- 어떤 전치사 뒤든 동사는 -ing형을 씁니다(what / why / how / whether절은 자신의 동사 형태를 그대로 유지합니다). 어떤 단어를 명사로 바꿔 넣을 수 있다면 그 자리에도 -ing형이 어울립니다: good at chess -> good at playing chess.
