의무와 조언을 나타내는 조동사: must / have to / should
A2 Modals of obligation & advice: must / have to / should 26 / 50
요약
must과 have to는 어떤 일이 필요하다고 말할 때 쓰고, should / ought to는 조언할 때 씁니다.
이 동사들은 모두 다른 동사의 동사원형 앞에 옵니다(have to, ought to, need to를 제외하면 to를 쓰지 않습니다).
You must wear a seatbelt. / I must call her.
- have to / has to = 외부에서 오는 의무(법, 직장, 상황 등): I have to work on Saturday.
|---|---|---|
| mustn’t | 금지되어 있다. | You mustn’t smoke here. |
| don’t / doesn’t have to | 필요하지 않다. | You don’t have to come. |
- should / shouldn’t = 조언, 권유: You should rest. / You shouldn’t worry.
You ought to see a doctor.
You’d better hurry.
I had to leave early yesterday.
- need to = 필요하다: I need to buy milk.(부정형: don’t need to)
We’re supposed to wear black.

- You don’t must smoke. -> You mustn’t smoke. — must은 do를 절대 쓰지 않습니다; 금지형은 mustn’t입니다.
- You mustn’t pay, it’s free. -> You don’t have to pay, it’s free. — ‘필요 없음’은 don’t have to이고, mustn’t(금지)가 아닙니다.
- Does she must work today? -> Does she have to work today? — 의문문에는 must이 아니라 (do/does와 함께) have to를 씁니다.
- I must to call him. -> I must call him. — must, should, mustn’t 뒤에는 to를 쓰지 않습니다.
- Yesterday I must leave early. -> Yesterday I had to leave early.
- You should to rest. -> You should rest.
- 암기 도우미: mustn’t = 멈춰!(금지), don’t have to = 편하게(선택 사항).
You’d better save your work (or you’ll lose it).
