this/that/these/those를 사용해 사물을 가리키며 가까운지 먼지 나타냅니다. This와 these은 가까움(여기, 지금)을, that과 those은 멂(저기, 그때, 끝난 것)을 뜻합니다.
규칙
지시사는 두 가지 역할을 합니다:
- 한정사 — 명사 앞: this book, those cars.
- 대명사 — 단독으로, 뒤에 명사 없이: This is nice. What are those?
동시에 두 가지를 알려줍니다:
- 수: 단수인지 복수인지.
- 거리: 화자와 가까운지 먼지.

명사와 함께 쓸 때는 명사가 바로 뒤에 옵니다: this apple, these apples, that man, those men. 형태는 명사의 수와 일치해야 합니다: 단수 명사 -> this/that; 복수 명사 -> these/those.
일상에서 자주 쓰이는 용법:
- 가리키기: Look at that bird! I like these shoes.
- 사람 소개하기: This is my friend Sam. These are my parents.
- 전화 통화에서: Hello, this is Anna. Who’s that?(자기 자신은 this, 상대방은 that라고 말합니다.)
- 방금 말했거나 들은 생각을 다시 가리키기: That’s a good idea. That’s why I’m tired.
명사를 반복하지 않으려면 one(단수) 또는 ones(복수)을 씁니다: I like this one. The red ones are mine. Not that one - this one. 지시대명사는 명사 대신 뒤에 오는 구로도 한정될 수 있으며, 이때는 ones을 추가로 쓸 필요가 없습니다: These are mine; those on the shelf are yours. Those of us who cycle leave earlier.

자주 하는 실수
- I like these car. -> I like this car. — 단수 명사에는 this/that가 필요하며, these/those는 쓰지 않습니다.

- What is those? -> What are those? — 복수 지시대명사는 복수 동사를 씁니다.
- Is this John?(전화에서 상대방에 대해 물을 때) -> Is that John? — 전화선 저편에 있는 사람은 this가 아니라 that입니다.
- I want the red one.(여럿에 대해) -> I want the red ones. — 복수형에는 ones를 씁니다.
학습 팁
- 암기 도우미: this과 these는 here와, that와 those는 there와 짝을 이룹니다.
- 먼저 수를 세고 고르세요: 하나 = this/that; 둘 이상 = these/those.
- 전화 통화에서 나 자신은 항상 this(This is Anna)이고, 상대방은 that(Who’s that?)입니다.
