B1 Modals of deduction & speculation 42 / 50
- The light’s on, so she must be home.(根拠 -> 確信あり・はい)
- He can’t be hungry - he just ate.(根拠 -> 確信あり・いいえ)
- I’m not sure where Tom is; he might be at the gym.(可能性が開かれている)
重要: must be(本当だと確信している)の反対は can’t be(うそだと確信している)であり、mustn’t be ではありません。
| can’t have / couldn’t have + 過去分詞 | 起きなかったと確信している |
| might / may / could have + 過去分詞 | 起きたかもしれない |
*推量の場合、「they should have arrived by now」は「もう着いているはずだ」という意味です。
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 現在 | must be / do | can’t / couldn’t be / do | might / may / could be / do | should / ought to be / do |
| 過去 | must have done | can’t / couldn’t have done | might / may / could have done | should / ought to have done |
注:
- 法助動詞の後の動詞はつねに 原形(be、go、know)であり、to be や is にはなりません。
- 過去のことにはつねに have + 過去分詞(have gone、have known、have left)を使います。
She must be working late. / He might have been sleeping.
例文
| English | 注 |
|---|---|
| Their car’s in the drive, so they must be at home. | |
| You can’t be tired already - we’ve only just started! must be の反対であり、mustn’t ではない。 |
| The keys aren’t here; I might have left them at work. |
| Nobody’s answering. They could be asleep. | |
| She can’t have heard the news - she looks so happy. can’t + have + 過去分詞。 |
| The match started at six, so it should be finishing now. |
| He must have missed the bus; he’s never this late. | |
| They may not know the way - send them the map. | may not=たぶん〜ない(can’t とは違う)。 |
- She mustn’t be home. -> She can’t be home.:「うそだと確信している」場合は can’t を使い、mustn’t は使いません。
- He must left already. -> He must have left already.:過去の推量には have + 過去分詞が必要です。
- It might to rain.
- They can’t be missed the train. -> They can’t have missed the train.:過去のことには have + 過去分詞を使います。
- You must to be joking. -> You must be joking.:法助動詞と動詞の間に to は入れません。
- 覚え方:must と can’t は確信を持つ双子、might/may/could は自信のないほうです。
- 過去のことなら、同じ法助動詞の後に have + 過去分詞を入れるだけです:must be -> must have been。
- must(レッスン26では義務、ここでは確信)や can(レッスン17では能力、ここでは can’t が不可能を表す)の意味を混同しないでください。
