要点

there is／there are を使って、何かが存在すること、あるいはある場所にあることを言います。1つのもの（または不可算名詞）には there is を、2つ以上のものには there are を使います。

規則

There＋be は、新しいものを紹介するときに使います。本当の主語は動詞の後に来て、動詞はその主語と一致します。

  • There is＋単数名詞または不可算名詞：There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
  • There are＋複数名詞：There are two cafes near my house.

文末に場所を表す語句を加えることがよくありますが（on the table, near my house, in the box）、必ず必要というわけではありません：There is a problem.

there と it を混同しないでください。There は何かが存在することを言います。It は、すでに知っているものを特定したり指し示したりします。

疑問文と短い答え方

短い答え方では名詞を繰り返しません：Yes, there is.（Yes, there is a lift. ではない）

列挙するときは、ふつう動詞は最初の項目に一致させます：

  • There is a pen and two books on the desk.（最初の項目＝a pen、単数）
  • There are two books and a pen on the desk.（最初の項目＝two books、複数）

短縮形：there’s は話し言葉でも書き言葉でもよく使われます。There’re（there are の短縮形）は話し言葉では聞かれますが、書き言葉ではまれです：there are は省略せずに書きます。

過去（詳しくはレッスン14）：単数には there was、複数には there were を使います：There was a party. There were many guests.

よくある間違い

  • There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk.：1つのものには is が必要です。
  • There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes.：複数には are が必要です。
  • It is a problem with the car.（紹介するために） -> There is a problem with the car.：何かが存在することを言うには there を使います。
  • There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats.／There are no seats.：否定は1つだけで、2つ重ねません。
  • Yes, there is a lift.（短い答え方として） -> Yes, there is.：名詞を繰り返しません。

ヒント

  • 動詞のすぐ後の名詞を見ます：1つのものや不可算名詞なら -> is、2つ以上なら -> are。
  • There’s no と there isn’t a／there aren’t any は同じ意味です。no のほうが少し強く聞こえます。
  • There＝「それが存在する」、it＝「私はこのものについて話している」。すでに知っている何かを指し示せるなら、it を使います。
  • 過去のことを言うには、is／are を was／were に入れ替えるだけです：それ以外は変わりません。
