要点
this／that／these／those を使って物を指し示し、自分に近いか遠いかを表します。This と these は近い（ここ、今）ことを、that と those は遠い（あそこ、あのとき、終わったこと）ことを意味します。
規則
指示代名詞には2つの働きがあります。
- 限定詞（指示形容詞的用法）：名詞の前：this book、those cars。
- 代名詞：単独で、後に名詞をつけない：This is nice. What are those?
同時に2つのことを伝えます。
- 数： 単数か複数か。
- 距離： 話し手に近いか、話し手から遠いか。

名詞と一緒に使うときは、名詞がすぐ後に続きます：this apple、these apples、that man、those men。形は名詞の数に合わせなければなりません：単数名詞 -> this／that；複数名詞 -> these／those。
日常でよく使う場面：
- 指差すとき： Look at that bird! I like these shoes.
- 人を紹介するとき： This is my friend Sam. These are my parents.
- 電話で： Hello, this is Anna. Who’s that?（自分については this、相手については that と言います。）
- 直前に言ったり聞いたりした考えを指すとき： That’s a good idea. That’s why I’m tired.
名詞の繰り返しを避けるには、one（単数）や ones（複数）を使います：I like this one. The red ones are mine. Not that one - this one. 指示代名詞は、名詞の代わりに後ろに続く句によって限定することもできます：その場合 ones も一緒に必要ではありません：These are mine; those on the shelf are yours. Those of us who cycle leave earlier.

よくある間違い
- I like these car. -> I like this car.：単数名詞には this／that が必要で、these／those ではありません。
- Look at this birds. -> Look at these birds.：複数名詞には these／those が必要です。
- What is those? -> What are those?：複数の指示代名詞には複数形の動詞を使います。
- Is this John?（電話で相手について尋ねるとき） -> Is that John?：電話の向こうにいる相手は that であって、this ではありません。
- I want the red one.（複数について） -> I want the red ones.：複数には ones を使います。
ヒント
- 覚え方：this と these は here と、that と those は there と一緒に覚えましょう。
- まず数を数えてから選びます：1つ＝this／that；2つ以上＝these／those。日本語の「これ・それ・あれ」の3区分とは違い、英語は「近い（this/these）」と「それ以外すべて（that/those）」の2区分だけで、thatが日本語の「それ」と「あれ」の両方をカバーします。
- 電話では、自分は常に this（This is Anna）で、相手は that（Who’s that?）です。
- 考えに反応するときは that’s を使います：That’s true. That’s why. That’s a good question.
