There is / there are (il y a)
A1 there is / there are 9 / 50
En bref
Utilisez there is / there are pour dire que quelque chose existe ou se trouve quelque part. Utilisez there is pour une seule chose (ou un nom indénombrable) et there are pour deux choses ou plus.
La règle
There + be présente quelque chose de nouveau.
- There is + nom singulier ou nom indénombrable : There is a book on the table. There is some milk.
- There are + nom pluriel : There are two cafes near my house.
On ajoute souvent un lieu à la fin (on the table, near my house, in the box), mais ce n’est pas toujours nécessaire : There is a problem.
Ne confondez pas there et it. There dit que quelque chose existe. It identifie ou renvoie à une chose déjà connue.
| Utilisez there (existe) | Utilisez it (identifie / renvoie) |
|---|---|
| There is a problem. | It is a big problem. |
| There is a dog in the garden. | It is a friendly dog. |
Formes et structures
Affirmatif
| Sujet après le verbe | Forme | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| singulier / indénombrable | there is (there’s) | There’s a key in the drawer. |
| pluriel | there are | There are four chairs. |
Négatif
| Forme | Exemple |
|---|---|
| there is not / there isn’t | There isn’t a bus today. |
| there are not / there aren’t | There aren’t any seats. |
| there is no + nom | There’s no time. |
| there are no + nom | There are no windows. |
Questions et réponses courtes
| Question | Réponse courte (oui) | Réponse courte (non) |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a lift? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn’t. |
| Are there any shops? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren’t. |
On ne répète pas le nom dans la réponse courte : Yes, there is. (et non Yes, there is a lift.)
- There is a pen and two books on the desk. (premier élément = a pen, singulier)
- There are two books and a pen on the desk. (premier élément = two books, pluriel)
There’re (pour there are) s’entend à l’oral mais est rare à l’écrit — écrivez there are en toutes lettres.
Passé (plus dans la leçon 14) : utilisez there was (singulier) et there were (pluriel) : There was a party. There were many guests.
Exemples
| English | Remarque |
|---|---|
| There is a cat under the chair. | Une chose -> is au singulier. |
| There’s some bread in the kitchen. | Nom indénombrable + forme contractée there’s. |
| There are three messages for you. | Nom pluriel -> are. |
| There isn’t a clock in this room. | Négatif singulier. |
| There aren’t any clean cups. | Négatif pluriel avec any. |
| There’s no reason to worry. | there’s no + nom = « aucun » plus fort. |
| Is there a bank near here? | Question fermée (oui/non), singulier. |
| There is a table and two lamps in the hall. |
Erreurs fréquentes
- There are a book on the desk. -> There is a book on the desk. — une seule chose a besoin de is.
- There is two cafes. -> There are two cafes. — le pluriel a besoin de are.
- It is a problem with the car. (pour le présenter) -> There is a problem with the car. — utilisez there pour dire que quelque chose existe.
- There aren’t no seats. -> There aren’t any seats. / There are no seats. — une seule négation, pas deux.
- Yes, there is a lift. (comme réponse courte) -> Yes, there is. — ne répétez pas le nom.
Conseils
- There’s no et there isn’t a / there aren’t any veulent dire la même chose ; no sonne un peu plus fort.
- There = « cela existe » ; it = « je parle de cette chose ». Si vous pouvez montrer quelque chose déjà connu, utilisez it.
- Pour le passé, remplacez simplement is/are par was/were — tout le reste reste identique.
