Subjuntivo y restos formales

C1 Subjunctive & formal remnants 50 / 50

En resumen

El inglés moderno apenas conserva el subjuntivo, pero quedan dos restos útiles: el subjuntivo de mandato —la forma base sin flexión tras palabras que piden algo o subrayan su importancia (I insist that he be on time)— y el subjuntivo con were en oraciones irreales (If I were you). Aparte de esto, un puñado de expresiones fijas (so be it, come what may) son simples fórmulas que se aprenden de memoria.

La regla

  • I suggest that he be on time. (no is)
  • It is essential that she arrive early. (no arrives)
  • They demanded that he leave. (no left / leaves)

  • They insisted that the door remain open.

Las negaciones simplemente colocan not delante del verbo en forma base, sin do/does/did:

  • We ask that visitors not touch the exhibits. (no do not touch)

La pasiva usa be + participio pasado: It is vital that the form be signed today.

  • I suggest that he should be on time. (brit.) = …that he be on time. (formal / amer.)

Atención: suggest y recommend tienen dos sentidos. La idea de mandato («deberías hacerlo») lleva la forma base: I recommend that she see a doctor. The data suggests that she is improving.

2. El subjuntivo con were usa were para todas las personas en situaciones irreales o hipotéticas: en condicionales, deseos y tras as if / as though y suppose:

  • If I were you, I’d accept. / I wish it were over. / He talks as if he were a child.

Solo el verbo be conserva esta forma especial; was es habitual en el habla cotidiana, pero were es la opción segura y formal (véase la lección 35).

Ejemplos

Errores frecuentes

  • I suggest that he is on time. -> I suggest that he be on time. — el subjuntivo de mandato usa be, no is.
  • It is vital that she arrives early. -> It is vital that she arrive early.
  • They demanded that he doesn’t leave. -> They demanded that he not leave. — se niega con not solo, sin do/does.
  • If I was rich, I’d help. -> If I were rich, I’d help.
  • He insisted that she left. (significa: le ordenó que se fuera) -> He insisted that she leave.

Consejos

  • El truco para recordar más fácil: tras demand / suggest / essential / important, usa la misma forma que usarías tras to: to be, to arrive, to pay -> quita to y te quedan be, arrive, pay.
  • ¿Te suena raro? En inglés británico casi siempre puedes cambiarlo por should + verbo en forma base (…that he should arrive). Es una opción segura y natural.
  • Para las situaciones irreales, basta con recordar una sola frase fija, If I were you: lleva el subjuntivo con were a todos los demás casos también.
  • Trata come what may, so be it y be that as it may como elementos de vocabulario independientes: apréndelos enteros, sin analizarlos.
