Alternative and preference (要么…要么, 与其…不如)

B2 选择复句(要么…要么、与其…不如) 53 / 56

In short

Chinese uses separate words for listing choices and for stating a preference. 要么……要么 (yàome…yàome, “either … or”) offers two exclusive alternatives, 或者 (huòzhě, “or”) is the plain “or” that joins options inside a statement, and 与其……不如 (yǔqí…bùrú) rejects the first option in favour of the second (“rather than A, better B”). One trap up front: the “A or B?” question uses 还是, not 或者 - that belongs to Question-word, A-not-A and alternative questions.

The rule

These three frames all set two options side by side, but they do different jobs: 要么 forces a choice, 或者 just lists, and 与其 picks a winner.

Step 1 - 要么……要么 (yàome…yàome): the exclusive “either … or”. It lays out two mutually exclusive options - one or the other, not both - and often carries the weight of a decision or ultimatum. Each option gets its own 要么.

要么 + Clause A,要么 + Clause B

要么你去,要么我去。 (Yàome nǐ qù, yàome wǒ qù.) - Either you go, or I go. You can extend the list (要么…要么…要么…) and 要么 may sit before or after the subject (要么你去 = 你要么去).

Step 2 - 或者 (huòzhě): “or” in a statement. This is the everyday “or” that joins alternatives inside a declarative sentence - after a modal, a verb, or two nouns. It does not force a choice; all the options are acceptable. It can pair as 或者……或者……, and the terse one-syllable form 或 (huò) is used in formal writing.

我们坐地铁或者坐公交都行。 (Wǒmen zuò dìtiě huòzhě zuò gōngjiāo dōu xíng.) - We can take the subway or the bus, either is fine.

The boundary that matters: a choice question (“tea or coffee?”) uses 还是 (háishi), never 或者. Statement = 或者; question = 还是. See Question-word, A-not-A and alternative questions.

Step 3 - 与其……不如 (yǔqí…bùrú): “rather than … better to”. It weighs two options and comes down for the second one. The trap is the order: 与其 introduces the option you REJECT, 不如 introduces the one you PREFER. Where both options belong to one subject, 与其 may sit after it, exactly as 要么 does: 他与其一个人搬桌子,不如等人来帮忙。 (Tā yǔqí yí ge rén bān zhuōzi, bùrú děng rén lái bāngmáng.)

与其 + [rejected option],不如 + [preferred option]

与其抱怨,不如想办法。 (Yǔqí bàoyuàn, bùrú xiǎng bànfǎ.) - Rather than complain, better to find a way. Add 倒 for a “might as well” flavour (倒不如 dào bùrú), and note the “would rather … than” cousin 宁可/宁愿……也不 (nìngkě/nìngyuàn…yě bù), which keeps one option and flatly refuses the other.

Examples

  • 要么你现在走,要么等我一起走。 (Yàome nǐ xiànzài zǒu, yàome děng wǒ yìqǐ zǒu.) - Either you leave now, or you wait and we go together.
  • 这件事要么成功,要么失败,没有别的可能。 (Zhè jiàn shì yàome chénggōng, yàome shībài, méiyǒu bié de kěnéng.) - This will either succeed or fail; there’s no other possibility.
  • 你要么打电话,要么发消息,总得联系他一下。 (Nǐ yàome dǎ diànhuà, yàome fā xiāoxi, zǒng děi liánxì tā yíxià.) - Either call or message him - you’ve got to get in touch somehow.
  • 你可以用现金或者信用卡付款。 (Nǐ kěyǐ yòng xiànjīn huòzhě xìnyòngkǎ fùkuǎn.) - You can pay with cash or a credit card.
  • 我们星期六或者星期天见面都行。 (Wǒmen xīngqīliù huòzhě xīngqītiān jiànmiàn dōu xíng.) - Saturday or Sunday both work for us to meet.
  • 与其在家等,不如出去找工作。 (Yǔqí zài jiā děng, bùrú chūqù zhǎo gōngzuò.) - Rather than wait at home, better to go out and look for work.
  • 与其买新的,不如把旧的修好。 (Yǔqí mǎi xīn de, bùrú bǎ jiù de xiūhǎo.) - Rather than buy a new one, better to fix the old one.
  • 与其在这里等,倒不如自己去看看。 (Yǔqí zài zhèlǐ děng, dào bùrú zìjǐ qù kànkan.) - Rather than wait here, we might as well go and take a look ourselves.
  • 他宁可自己吃亏,也不愿麻烦别人。 (Tā nìngkě zìjǐ chīkuī, yě bú yuàn máfan biéren.) - He’d rather take a loss himself than trouble others.

Common mistakes

  • 你喝茶或者咖啡? -> 你喝茶还是咖啡? (Nǐ hē chá háishi kāfēi?) - In a question that offers a choice, use 还是; 或者 joins alternatives only in a statement.
  • 与其想办法,不如抱怨。 -> 与其抱怨,不如想办法。 (Yǔqí bàoyuàn, bùrú xiǎng bànfǎ.) - 与其 marks the option you REJECT and 不如 the one you PREFER; swapping them reverses your meaning.
  • 要么你去,你留下。 -> 要么你去,要么你留下。 (Yàome nǐ qù, yàome nǐ liúxià.) - 要么……要么 comes as a pair; each alternative needs its own 要么.
  • 与其坐车,但是走路更好。 -> 与其坐车,不如走路。 (Yǔqí zuò chē, bùrú zǒulù.) - The fixed frame is 与其……不如……; don’t finish it with 但是 or 而是.

Tips

  • Decision vs list: 要么……要么 is “pick exactly one” (often an ultimatum), while 或者 just lists options that are all fine (“A or B, either works”). If both choices are acceptable, use 或者; if it’s strictly one-or-the-other, use 要么.
  • The one-line rule for “or”: statement -> 或者, question -> 还是. English uses “or” for both, so this is a classic false friend - a question that offers a choice takes no 吗, just 还是.
  • Word order for preference: read 与其 A,不如 B as “rather-than A, not-as-good-as B” - whatever follows 不如 is the choice you’re recommending. Reach for 倒不如 when you mean “might as well”.
  • Tone note: in 不如 the 不 stays bù (before the 2nd-tone 如), but in 也不愿, 也不去 it flips to bú before a 4th-tone verb - as in the example 也不愿 (yě bú yuàn).
