Separable verbs (离合词)
B1 离合词 50 / 56
In short
Many two-syllable Chinese “verbs” are secretly verb + object pairs called 离合词 (líhécí, “separable words”): 见面 (jiàn miàn, “meet” = see-face), 睡觉 (shuì jiào, “sleep”), 帮忙 (bāng máng, “help out”), 结婚 (jié hūn, “get married”). Because the object slot is already full, you cannot bolt another object on (见面他); you split the word instead and drop 了/过, counts and durations inside the gap: 见了一次面 (jiàn le yí cì miàn) = met once.
The rule
A separable verb looks like one word but behaves like a tiny Verb + Object phrase. 见面 is literally “see + face,” 睡觉 is “sleep + a sleep,” 结婚 is “tie + marriage.” Once you see the hidden object, every quirk follows.
Step 1 - Never add a second object. The noun slot is taken, so a real-world object cannot follow the verb. Introduce it before the verb with a coverb - usually 跟 (gēn) or 和 (hé) for “with,” 给 (gěi) or 对 (duì) for “to/at”:
Subject + 跟 + Person + Separable-Verb
我跟他见面。 (Wǒ gēn tā jiàn miàn.) = I meet him. Not 我见面他.
Step 2 - Split the word to add aspect. The markers 了 and 过 attach to the verb half, landing between the two characters: 见了面 (jiàn le miàn, “met”), 结过婚 (jié guo hūn, “have been married”). Durative 着 goes there too: 聊着天 (liáo zhe tiān, “chatting away”).
Step 3 - Counts and durations also go inside. A frequency count or a time span slots in front of the object half - this is the pattern from Duration and frequency complements, just applied inside the word:
Verb-half + 了 + count / duration + Object-half
见了一次面 (jiàn le yí cì miàn) = met once. 睡了三个小时觉 (shuì le sān ge xiǎoshí jiào) = slept for three hours.
Step 4 - Modifiers become possessors. To aim the verb at someone, turn them into a possessor with 的 in front of the object half: 帮我的忙 (bāng wǒ de máng) = do me a favor; 生他的气 (shēng tā de qì) = be angry at him. A “one” quantifier works the same way: 帮你一个忙 (bāng nǐ yí ge máng). In everyday speech that 一 drops, leaving the bare measure word in the gap for a one-off or brief action: 帮个忙 (bāng ge máng), 洗个澡 (xǐ ge zǎo), 道个歉 (dào ge qiàn) - and with 了 in front of it you get the commonest shape of all, the 她洗了个澡 of the examples below.
Step 5 - Reduplication doubles only the front half. To soften a separable verb into “do a bit of,” repeat the verb character, not the whole word: 见见面 (jiàn jian miàn), 散散步 (sàn san bù, “take a little walk”), 聊聊天 (liáo liao tiān) - never 见面见面.
One thing that does not move inside: sentence-final 了 for change of state stays at the very end. 他们结婚了 (Tāmen jié hūn le) = They got married - nothing follows 婚.

Examples
- 我们明天见面。 (Wǒmen míngtiān jiàn miàn.) - We’ll meet tomorrow.
- 我跟他见了一次面。 (Wǒ gēn tā jiàn le yí cì miàn.) - I met with him once.
- 昨晚我睡了八个小时觉。 (Zuó wǎn wǒ shuì le bā ge xiǎoshí jiào.) - Last night I slept for eight hours.
- 你能帮我一个忙吗? (Nǐ néng bāng wǒ yí ge máng ma?) - Can you do me a favor?
- 他们去年结婚了。 (Tāmen qùnián jié hūn le.) - They got married last year.
- 别生我的气。 (Bié shēng wǒ de qì.) - Don’t be angry at me.
- 我想跟你聊聊天。 (Wǒ xiǎng gēn nǐ liáo liao tiān.) - I’d like to chat with you a bit.
- 我今天想请一天假。 (Wǒ jīntiān xiǎng qǐng yì tiān jià.) - I’d like to take one day off today.
- 她洗了个澡就睡了。 (Tā xǐ le ge zǎo jiù shuì le.) - She took a bath and then went to sleep.
- 我们已经见过面了。 (Wǒmen yǐjīng jiàn guo miàn le.) - We’ve already met.
Common mistakes
- 见面他。 -> 跟他见面。 (gēn tā jiàn miàn) - The object slot is filled by 面, so a person can’t follow; bring them in before the verb with a coverb 跟/和.
- 我睡觉了八个小时。 -> 我睡了八个小时觉。 (wǒ shuì le bā ge xiǎoshí jiào) - 了 and the duration split the word; they go between 睡 and 觉, not after the whole thing.
- 他结婚了小李。 -> 他跟小李结婚了。 (tā gēn Xiǎo Lǐ jié hūn le) - Same rule: the spouse takes 跟, and 了 stays at the end as change-of-state with nothing after 婚.
- 你能帮忙我吗? -> 你能帮我的忙吗? (nǐ néng bāng wǒ de máng ma) - Make the person a possessor inside 帮…忙 (or use plain non-separable 帮我, “help me”).
- 我见过面他两次。 -> 我跟他见过两次面。 (wǒ gēn tā jiàn guo liǎng cì miàn) - 过 and the count 两次 go before 面; the person still needs 跟 out front.
Tips
- The one fact that fixes most errors: the second character is already the object. If you can’t say “*Verb-him” straight (帮忙他, 结婚她), the word is separable - move the person to the front with 跟/和/对/给, or make them a possessor with 的.
- Everything grammatical squeezes into the gap: 了、过、着, counts (见一次面), durations (睡三个小时觉) and 的-modifiers (帮我的忙). Only sentence-final change-of-state 了 stays outside, at the very end (结婚了).
- Reduplication doubles the front half only: 散散步, 聊聊天, 帮帮忙 - never the whole word. The repeated syllable is neutral tone: sànsanbù.
- Watch 一 tone sandhi inside these splits: 一次 is yí cì (before 4th tone), 一个 is yí ge, but 一天 is yì tiān (before 1st tone). Same 一, different tone by what follows.
