Contrast connectives (却/而/不过/然而)

B1 转折连词(却、而、不过、然而、反而) 43 / 56

In short

Chinese marks contrast with two different kinds of word, and the trap is where each one sits. 却 (què, “yet”) and 反而 (fǎn’ér, “on the contrary”) are adverbs - they go after the subject. 不过 (búguò, “but”, soft) and 然而 (rán’ér, “however”, formal) are conjunctions - they open the second clause. 而 (ér) links two contrasting parts. Pick the right position and the right register.

The rule

You already have 但是 / 可是 (dànshì / kěshì, “but”) from Conditional, cause and concession. This lesson adds the five words that colour a contrast: how strong, how formal, and - crucially - where they stand in the clause.

Step 1 - Sort them into adverbs vs conjunctions. This one split decides word order.

  • Adverbs (却, 反而) behave like every other Chinese adverb: they stand after the subject and before the verb, never at the head of the clause - that is, never in front of an expressed subject. When clause 2 shares clause 1’s subject, that subject is simply dropped and the adverb then follows the comma directly (他不但没生气,反而笑了。); the slot is still the subject’s, not the head of the clause.
  • Conjunctions (不过, 然而, and contrastive 而) stand at the head of the second clause, before its subject - just like 但是.

Step 2 - 却 (què): “yet”, against expectation. An adverb of contrast. Put it after the subject of the second clause.

Clause A,Subject + 却 + Verb / Adjective

他很有钱,却不快乐。 (tā hěn yǒu qián, què bú kuàilè.) - He’s rich, yet he isn’t happy. Note 却 sits after 他, not before it.

Step 3 - 反而 (fǎn’ér): “on the contrary”, the opposite result. Also an adverb, also after the subject - but stronger than 却: the outcome is the reverse of what you’d expect. It often pairs with 不但 (búdàn, “not only”) in the first clause: 不但……反而 (“not only not X, but instead Y”).

吃了药,病反而更重了。 (chī le yào, bìng fǎn’ér gèng zhòng le.) - He took the medicine, but instead the illness got worse.

Step 4 - 不过 (búguò) and 然而 (rán’ér): head-of-clause “but”. Both open the second clause like 但是, but differ in register: 不过 is soft and conversational (a gentle “but, though”), 然而 is formal and written (“however, nevertheless”).

这个菜好吃,不过有点贵。 (zhège cài hǎochī, búguò yǒudiǎn guì.) - This dish is tasty, but a bit pricey.

Step 5 - 而 (ér): contrastive “whereas”. A conjunction that joins two parallel parts with opposite qualities - two adjectives, or two short clauses. Its additive “and” use belongs to Coordinate and additive clauses; here it means “yet / whereas”.

哥哥高,而弟弟矮。 (gēge gāo, ér dìdi ǎi.) - The older brother is tall, whereas the younger one is short.

Examples

  • 他很努力,却没有成功。 (Tā hěn nǔlì, què méiyǒu chénggōng.) - He worked hard, yet he didn’t succeed.
  • 这么重要的事,你却忘了。 (Zhème zhòngyào de shì, nǐ què wàng le.) - Such an important matter, and yet you forgot it.
  • 天气预报说有雨,天却一直很晴。 (Tiānqì yùbào shuō yǒu yǔ, tiān què yìzhí hěn qíng.) - The forecast said rain, yet the sky stayed clear all day.
  • 他不但没生气,反而笑了。 (Tā búdàn méi shēngqì, fǎn’ér xiào le.) - He wasn’t angry; on the contrary, he laughed.
  • 我以为他会同意,他反而拒绝了。 (Wǒ yǐwéi tā huì tóngyì, tā fǎn’ér jùjué le.) - I thought he would agree; instead, he refused.
  • 哥哥高,而弟弟矮。 (Gēge gāo, ér dìdi ǎi.) - The older brother is tall, whereas the younger one is short.
  • 这件衣服便宜,不过质量不太好。 (Zhè jiàn yīfu piányi, búguò zhìliàng bú tài hǎo.) - This piece of clothing is cheap, but the quality isn’t great.
  • 我很想帮你,不过今天实在没空。 (Wǒ hěn xiǎng bāng nǐ, búguò jīntiān shízài méi kòng.) - I’d love to help you, but I really have no time today.
  • 他答应了,然而始终没有做到。 (Tā dāying le, rán’ér shǐzhōng méiyǒu zuòdào.) - He promised, however he never actually did it.
  • 计划看起来很好,然而问题很多。 (Jìhuà kànqǐlai hěn hǎo, rán’ér wèntí hěn duō.) - The plan looks good; nevertheless, there are many problems.

Common mistakes

  • 却他没来。 -> 他却没来。 (tā què méi lái.) - 却 is an adverb, so it must follow the subject, not open the clause the way 但是 does.
  • 反而价格更高了。 -> 价格反而更高了。 (jiàgé fǎn’ér gèng gāo le.) - 反而 is also an adverb; keep it after the subject and before the verb.
  • 这个菜好吃,但是不过有点贵。 -> 这个菜好吃,不过有点贵。 (búguò yǒudiǎn guì.) - Don’t stack two contrast conjunctions; 不过 already means “but” on its own.
  • 他不但没道歉,却更生气了。 -> 他不但没道歉,反而更生气了。 (fǎn’ér gèng shēngqì le.) - A reversed, backfired result takes 反而 (contrary to expectation), and 不但……反而 is the set pair; plain 却 loses the “instead” force.

Tips

  • Position mnemonic: 却 and 反而 are 副词 (fùcí, adverbs) - they cling to the verb, so they hide after the subject. 不过 / 然而 / 而 are conjunctions - they open the clause. If a word can start clause 2, it’s a conjunction; if it sits next to the verb, it’s an adverb.
  • 却 vs 反而: both say “against expectation,” but 反而 goes further - the outcome is the opposite of what you’d predict (the medicine made it worse). Reach for 反而 whenever you could say “instead” or “on the contrary” in English, and remember its partner 不但……反而.
  • Register ladder for “but”: 不过 (soft, spoken) < 但是 / 可是 (neutral) < 然而 (formal, written). Use 然而 in an essay, 不过 in a chat message.
  • False friend for 而: English “and” and “but” are separate words, but one 而 covers both the additive “and” (lesson 42) and the contrastive “whereas” here; it is bookish, so in speech people prefer 却 or 不过.
