Structural particles 的, 地, 得

B1 结构助词(的、地、得) 41 / 56

In short

Three different characters - 的, 地, 得 - are all pronounced de (neutral tone) but do three different jobs. One test settles it: look at what sits next to de. A noun follows it -> write 的. A verb follows it -> write 地. A verb comes right before it -> write 得.

The rule

You already know each construction on its own. This lesson is only about which character to write, because in speech they sound identical and learners mix them up constantly. The distinction lives entirely on the page.

The whole decision is about position relative to a verb or noun:

Step 1 - 的 goes before a noun (describer -> thing). Anything describing a noun - an owner, an adjective, a whole clause - takes 的, and the noun follows: 红的花 (hóng de huā, “a red flower”), 老师的书 (lǎoshī de shū, “the teacher’s book”), 我买的东西 (wǒ mǎi de dōngxi, “the thing I bought”). This is the attributive/possessive/relative 的 owned by Lessons 4 and 32 - nothing new here except the spelling contrast.

Step 2 - 地 goes before a verb (manner -> action). When a describer tells you how an action is done and sits in front of the verb, it takes 地: 慢慢地走 (mànmàn de zǒu, “walk slowly”), 高兴地说 (gāoxìng de shuō, “say happily”), 认真地学习 (rènzhēn de xuéxí, “study diligently”). The frame is adverbial + 地 + verb. This is the one particle that is genuinely new at this level.

Step 3 - 得 goes after a verb (action -> result/degree). When the description of how an action turned out comes after the verb, it takes 得: 走得很慢 (zǒu de hěn màn, “walk slowly”), 说得很好 (shuō de hěn hǎo, “speak well”). The frame is verb + 得 + complement. This is the manner/state complement owned by Lesson 28.

The cleanest way to feel the split is to run the same describer through all three slots. Take 认真 (rènzhēn, “diligent, careful”):

  • 认真的学生 (rènzhēn de xuésheng) - “a diligent student” -> 的, because 学生 (a noun) follows.
  • 他认真地学习 (tā rènzhēn de xuéxí) - “he studies diligently” -> 地, because 学习 (a verb) follows.
  • 他学得很认真 (tā xué de hěn rènzhēn) - “he studies very diligently” -> 得, because 学 (a verb) comes before.

a verb right after de地de is marking manner in front of the action
a verb right before de得de is hanging a result behind the action

Examples

  • 这是老师的书。 (Zhè shì lǎoshī de shū.) - This is the teacher’s book.
  • 她是个漂亮的女孩。 (Tā shì gè piàoliang de nǚhái.) - She is a pretty girl.
  • 你写的字很漂亮。 (Nǐ xiě de zì hěn piàoliang.) - The characters you wrote are beautiful.
  • 他高兴地笑了。 (Tā gāoxìng de xiào le.) - He smiled happily.
  • 慢慢地吃,别着急。 (Mànmàn de chī, bié zháojí.) - Eat slowly, don’t rush.
  • 学生们认真地听老师讲课。 (Xuéshengmen rènzhēn de tīng lǎoshī jiǎngkè.) - The students listened attentively to the teacher’s lecture.
  • 他笑得很开心。 (Tā xiào de hěn kāixīn.) - He laughed very happily.
  • 他中文说得很流利。 (Tā Zhōngwén shuō de hěn liúlì.) - He speaks Chinese very fluently.
  • 你字写得很漂亮。 (Nǐ zì xiě de hěn piàoliang.) - You write characters beautifully.

Common mistakes

  • 漂亮地花 -> 漂亮的花 (piàoliang de huā) - A noun (花, “flower”) follows, so it is 的; 地 never sits before a noun.
  • 他高兴的说 -> 他高兴地说 (tā gāoxìng de shuō) - A describer standing in front of a verb (说, “say”) is manner, so it takes 地, not 的.
  • 他跑地很快 -> 他跑得很快 (tā pǎo de hěn kuài) - A description coming after the verb (跑, “run”) is a complement, so it takes 得; 地 goes before the verb, 得 after.
  • 你字写的很漂亮 -> 你字写得很漂亮 (nǐ zì xiě de hěn piàoliang) - After a verb the particle is 得; writing 的 here leaves the sentence dangling as an unfinished noun phrase (“the beautiful thing you wrote…”).

Tips

  • Memorize the split by position, not by meaning: 的 faces a noun, 地 faces a verb from the front, 得 trails a verb from behind. Compare the minimal pair 你写的字 (nǐ xiě de zì, “the characters you wrote” - a noun phrase) with 你字写得很漂亮 (nǐ zì xiě de hěn piàoliang, “you write characters beautifully” - a full sentence rating the action).
  • Character hooks: 的 carries 白 and is the everyday “‘s / adjective” marker for things; 地 also reads dì and means “ground / earth”, so tie it to standing on the ground to do an action (before the verb); 得 also reads dé “to get”, so tie it to getting a result out of the verb (after it).
  • All three are neutral tone (de) - never give them a tone mark in pinyin. In casual texting and handwriting many native speakers just write 的 for all three, but HSK and any formal writing keep them apart, so learn them as three.
  • 得 wears other hats with a real tone: 得 (děi) “must” (Lesson 26) and the potential 得 in 跑得动 (pǎo de dòng, “able to run”, Lesson 39). Here we only mean the toneless complement 得.
