Sentence-final 了 and change of state
A2 语气助词「了」(变化) 19 / 56
In short
At the very end of a sentence, 了 (le) means “things are different now.” It marks a new situation or a change of state, not a finished action. 下雨了 (xià yǔ le) = “it’s raining now” - it wasn’t a moment ago. This is a separate 了 from the completion 了 that hugs the verb: this one sits last and reports the change.
The rule
Chinese has two different 了 (le), and this lesson owns the second one - the sentence-final modal particle (语气助词, yǔqì zhùcí). It reports that a new state has arrived, measured against some earlier point. The core meaning is “now, and it’s different.” It goes at the very end of the whole sentence:
Subject + Predicate + 了
Both 了 are the neutral-tone particle le - never liǎo here. What tells them apart is position and job, not spelling (see the table below, and completion 了 in Completed-action 了 (verb + 了)).
Use 1 - a new situation. Something has come into being: 下雨了 (xià yǔ le, it’s raining now), 他是大学生了 (tā shì dàxuéshēng le, he’s a university student now), 我知道了 (wǒ zhīdào le, now I get it). English often carries this with “now,” “already,” or a fresh present tense.
Use 2 - an adjective “has become.” With a stative adjective, final 了 says the quality is newly true: 天黑了 (tiān hēi le, it’s gotten dark), 我饿了 (wǒ è le, I’m hungry now). No 是 (shì) here - the adjective is its own predicate, as in Adjectival predicate and degree adverbs.
Use 3 - a new quantity, age or time is reached. 我三十岁了 (wǒ sānshí suì le, I’ve turned thirty), 快十点了 (kuài shí diǎn le, it’s almost ten now).
Use 4 - a change of plan or habit, with 不…了. Put 了 after a negated verb to say “not anymore / not going to after all”: 我不去了 (wǒ bù qù le, I’m not going anymore), 他不抽烟了 (tā bù chōu yān le, he doesn’t smoke anymore). To say a thing has run out, use 没(有) + noun + 了: 没有钱了 (méiyǒu qián le, the money’s gone now). This is why 了 pairs so often with the negators from Negation with 不 and 没(有). (不 is written here with its citation tone bù; before a 4th-tone verb such as 去 (qù) or 饿 (è) it is spoken bú - that tone sandhi is covered in that lesson.)
Use 5 - “stop,” with 别…了. 别 + Verb + 了 tells someone to quit an action already in progress: 别说了 (bié shuō le, stop talking).
The 太…了 frame. The intensifier 太…了 (tài…le, “too / so…!”) always closes with this 了: 太贵了 (tài guì le, too expensive). Treat it as a fixed wrapper.
Note - the imminent 快要…了. The “about to happen” pattern 快要…了 / 就要…了 also ends in this 了, but it is developed in Conditions and immediacy; here just recognise that its final 了 is the same change-of-state particle.
Forms & patterns
What a sentence-final 了 signals:
| Use | Example | Pinyin | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| new situation / “now” | 下雨了 | xià yǔ le | it’s raining now |
| adjective “has become” | 天黑了 | tiān hēi le | it’s gotten dark |
| new quantity / age / time | 我三十岁了 | wǒ sānshí suì le | I’ve turned thirty |
| realization | 我知道了 | wǒ zhīdào le | now I get it |
| change of plan / habit (不…了) | 我不去了 | wǒ bù qù le | I’m not going anymore |
| stop an action (别…了) | 别说了 | bié shuō le | stop talking |
Two different 了 - position tells them apart:
| verb-suffix 了 (完成, completion) | sentence-final 了 (变化, change of state) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it sits | right after the verb | at the very end of the sentence |
| What it signals | the action was completed | a new situation - “now, it’s different” |
| Owned by | Completed-action 了 | this lesson |
| Example | 他睡了三个小时 (tā shuì le sān gè xiǎoshí) - he slept for three hours | 他睡了 (tā shuì le) - he’s gone to bed now |
Negating a change of state:
| Want to say | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| not anymore (habit/state changed) | 不 + V/Adj + 了 | 我不饿了 (wǒ bù è le) - I’m not hungry anymore |
| changed my mind, not going to | 不 + V + 了 | 我不去了 (wǒ bù qù le) - I’m not going after all |
| no longer have / ran out | 没(有) + N + 了 | 没有钱了 (méiyǒu qián le) - the money’s gone now |
Examples
- 下雨了。 (Xià yǔ le.) - It’s raining now.
- 天黑了。 (Tiān hēi le.) - It’s gotten dark.
- 我饿了。 (Wǒ è le.) - I’m hungry now.
- 我知道了。 (Wǒ zhīdào le.) - OK, I get it now.
- 他是大学生了。 (Tā shì dàxuéshēng le.) - He’s a university student now.
- 我三十岁了。 (Wǒ sānshí suì le.) - I’ve turned thirty.
- 我不去了。 (Wǒ bù qù le.) - I’m not going anymore.
- 他不抽烟了。 (Tā bù chōu yān le.) - He doesn’t smoke anymore.
- 太晚了。 (Tài wǎn le.) - It’s too late now.
- 别说了。 (Bié shuō le.) - Stop talking.
Common mistakes
- 了下雨。 -> 下雨了。 (Xià yǔ le.) - the change-of-state 了 goes at the very end of the sentence, never at the front.
- 天气是冷了。 -> 天气冷了。 (Tiānqì lěng le.) - an adjective is its own predicate; a change of state takes no 是.
- Meaning “I’ve quit smoking”: 我不抽烟。 -> 我不抽烟了。 (Wǒ bù chōu yān le.) - without 了, 我不抽烟 is just a habit (“I don’t smoke”); the final 了 is what adds “now / anymore.”
- Meaning “I’m not hungry anymore”: 我没饿了。 -> 我不饿了。 (Wǒ bù è le.) - the “not … anymore” change uses 不…了, not 没.
- 我每天喝咖啡了。 -> 我每天喝咖啡。 (Wǒ měitiān hē kāfēi.) - a timeless habit with no change needs no 了; add it only when something has actually become different.
Tips
- One mental test: does the sentence say something is different now than before? If yes, close it with 了. A timeless habit or fact (“I drink coffee every day”) takes none.
- Position sorts the two 了 apart: a verb-hugging 了 = completed action (Completed-action 了); an end-of-sentence 了 = “now, it’s changed.” When the verb is also the last word (他走了, tā zǒu le, he’s left now), a single 了 can carry both jobs at once.
- 不…了 is one of the most common spoken uses: 我不去了 = “I’ve decided not to go.” Hear it as “not … anymore / after all,” a change of mind.
- 我知道了 / 我懂了 (wǒ dǒng le, I get it now) with 了 marks the moment of realization - which is exactly why they are the standard reply to being told something. Plain 我知道 states you already know it.
