Impersonal constructions (-но/-то; one-member sentences)

B2 Безособові конструкції (форми на -но/-то; односкладні речення) 54 / 58

In short

Ukrainian very readily builds sentences with no grammatical subject. Two families do most of the work. First, the -но/-то predicative (зро́блено, напи́сано) — an agentless “it has been done” statement in which the doer is deliberately left out and the object stays in the accusative. Second, the one-member sentence (односкладне речення), where the subject slot is structurally absent: weather verbs (Світа́є), state predicatives with a dative experiencer (Мені́ хо́лодно), and “someone did it” verbs in the 3rd-person plural (Мене́ запроси́ли). Where English reaches for a dummy it, there, they or one, Ukrainian simply leaves the subject unspoken.

The rule

The -но/-то form. Take a passive participle and swap its ending: -ний → -но, -тий → -то (зро́блений → зро́блено, розби́тий → розби́то). The result is a fixed predicative that behaves quite differently from the participle it came from:

  • It is invariant — it never changes for gender or number. One form fits any object.
  • The logical object stays in the accusative (Робо́ту зро́блено), not the nominative. This is the single clearest signal that you are looking at the impersonal construction and not the adjectival passive (Робо́та зро́блена).
  • It is agentless: the sentence states that something got done without naming who did it. To name the doer, you switch to an ordinary personal sentence (Я зроби́в робо́ту).
  • Tense is carried by an invariant бути: zero copula in the present, було́ for the past, бу́де for the future — always the neuter form, never була́ in agreement with the object.

This construction is the natural voice of signs, notices, reports and results: Вхід заборо́нено, Ремо́нт закі́нчено, Квитки́ про́дано.

One-member sentences. Ukrainian grammar sorts subjectless (and subject-only) sentences into a small set of types. Knowing the labels helps you hear the “missing” subject:

  • Definite-personal — the verb is 1st/2nd person, so the pronoun is redundant: Люблю́ весну́.
  • Indefinite-personal — 3rd-person plural marks a doer who is unknown or irrelevant: Мене́ запроси́ли.
  • Generalized-personal — a 2nd-person-singular (or 3rd-plural) verb stating a general truth; the home of proverbs: Що посі́єш, те й пожне́ш.
  • Impersonal — no subject is even possible: weather verbs, reflexive states (не спи́ться), dative-experiencer predicatives (Мені́ хо́лодно), нема́є + genitive, modal predicatives (тре́ба, мо́жна), and the -но/-то form.
  • Nominal — a bare nominative that names a scene or thing: Ніч. Ти́ша.

Common mistakes

  • Робо́та зро́блено -> Робо́ту зро́блено — the logical object stays in the accusative, not the nominative.
  • Робо́ту зро́блена -> Робо́ту зро́блено — the -но/-то form is invariant; it never agrees in gender or number.
  • Робо́ту є зро́блено -> Робо́ту зро́блено — there is no copula in the present; use було́/бу́де only for past/future.
  • Робо́ту зро́блено мно́ю -> Я зроби́в робо́ту — the -но/-то statement is agentless; name the doer with a personal sentence instead.
  • Воно́ світа́є -> Світа́є — impersonal verbs take no subject; there is no Ukrainian equivalent of English “it”.
  • Нема́є час -> Нема́є ча́су — after нема́є the missing thing goes in the genitive.
  • Я хо́лодно -> Мені́ хо́лодно — the person who feels a state is in the dative, not the nominative.

Tips

  • Reach for -но/-то on signs, notices and reports: Вхід заборо́нено, Ремо́нт закі́нчено, Квитки́ про́дано. It is the crisp, official-sounding voice of results.
  • The one visible clue that separates this from the adjectival passive is the case of the object: Ха́ту збудо́вано (accusative — impersonal) vs Ха́та збудо́вана (nominative — passive).
  • Don’t hunt for a word to translate English “it” or “there”: Світа́є = “it’s getting light”, Надво́рі ти́хо = “it’s quiet outside” — both are completely subjectless.
  • Learn the dative-experiencer frame Мені́ + predicative: Мені́ хо́лодно / ва́жко / ціка́во / шкода́.
  • Modal predicatives тре́ба, потрі́бно, мо́жна, слід, ва́рто take a bare infinitive: Тре́ба йти, Мо́жна ввійти́?
  • To shift any -но/-то statement in time, add the invariant було́ or бу́де — never була́: Усе́ бу́де зро́блено.
