Prefixed verbs of motion

B1 Префіксовані дієслова руху (прийти, вийти, доїхати) 47 / 58

In short

Take a bare verb of motion (lesson 32) and glue a prefix onto its front, and you change two things at once. The prefix names the direction of the trip (при- = up to here, ви- = out, до- = as far as), and it flips the aspect: a prefix on the one-way (determinate) verb makes a perfective — one finished journey — while the same prefix on the round-trip (indeterminate) verb makes an imperfective. So прийти́ (perfective, “arrive once”) and прихо́дити (imperfective, “keep arriving”) are an aspect pair built from іти́ and ходи́ти.

The rule

The base verbs come in determinate / indeterminate pairs: іти́ / ходи́ти (on foot), ї́хати / ї́здити (by vehicle), and so on. A directional prefix does double duty.

  1. Direction. The prefix says which way the movement goes relative to a point: при- (arriving), ви- (going out), у-/в- (going in), до- (reaching), за- (dropping by), пере- (crossing), під- (approaching), від- (moving off), об- (going around), про- (passing through), по- (setting off).

  2. Aspect. Prefix + determinate verb → perfective (a single, completed trip): при- + іти́ = прийти́, до- + ї́хати = дої́хати. Prefix + indeterminate verb → imperfective (repeated, habitual, or in progress): при- + ходи́ти = прихо́дити, до- + ї́здити = доїжджа́ти.

Two spelling facts follow the base verb through every prefix. First, іти́ shrinks to -йти after a prefix (прийти́, ви́йти, зайти́), while ходи́ти keeps -ходити. Second, ї́хати stays -їхати in the perfective, but ї́здити normally appears as -їжджати in the imperfective (приїжджа́ти). And a prefix ending in a consonant needs the apostrophe before ї: в’їхати, під’їхати, об’їхати. The “in” prefix has two spellings, у- and в- — one prefix, not two, chosen by the euphony rule of lesson 3: у- after a consonant or a pause (Він увійшо́в), в- after a vowel (Вона́ ввійшла́); before ї only в’-, never *уїхати.

Forms & patterns

Perfective conjugation — the present-tense endings of a prefixed perfective read as a future (see lesson 27). Note the stress, which differs by verb: in прийти́ it sits on the prefix everywhere except the я-form (прийду́, but при́йдеш, при́йде), while дої́хати keeps its root stress on -ї- throughout:

Особаприйти́ (on foot)дої́хати (by vehicle)

Common mistakes

  • Щодня він прийде на роботу о восьмій. -> Щодня він прихо́дить на роботу о восьмій. — a repeated, habitual action needs the imperfective (прихо́дити), not the perfective.
  • Ми доходили до вокзалу за десять хвилин. -> Ми дійшли́ до вокзалу за десять хвилин. — one completed arrival is perfective; до- on the determinate verb gives дійти́.
  • Я вийшов з міста машиною. -> Я ви́їхав з міста машиною. — ви́йти is on foot; movement by vehicle takes the ї́хати-based ви́їхати.
  • обїхати, вїхати, підїхати -> об’їхати, в’їхати, під’їхати — a prefix ending in a hard consonant needs the apostrophe before ї.
  • приїзжа́ти на роботу -> приїжджа́ти на роботу — the usual imperfective of приї́хати is built on -їжджати; keep all of жджа.
  • пійти -> піти́ — по- + йти drops the о and gives піти́, not пійти.
  • вийшо́в пізно -> ви́йшов пізно — the prefix ви- is always stressed in the perfective (ви́йшов, ви́їхав).

Tips

  • Rule of thumb: prefix + one-way verb (іти́, ї́хати) = perfective; prefix + round-trip verb (ходи́ти, ї́здити) = imperfective. Learn each verb as a pair, e.g. прихо́дити / прийти́.
  • After any prefix, іти́ becomes -йти (прийти́, ви́йти, зайти́) and ходи́ти stays -ходити; ї́хати stays -їхати but ї́здити usually gives -їжджати.
  • Prefixes ending in a consonant insert -і- before -йти: віді-, піді-, зі-, обі-, розі- → відійти́, підійти́, зійти́, обійти́, розійти́ся.
  • Keep the apostrophe when a hard consonant meets ї: в’їхати, під’їхати, від’їхати, об’їхати, з’їхати.
  • Memorise the prefixes in opposite pairs: ви- (out) ↔ у-/в- (in); при- (arrive) ↔ від- (move off); під- (approach) ↔ від- (step away).
  • The prefix по- just means “set off”: піти́, пої́хати — an inceptive perfective with no round-trip partner.
