Compound sentences (і, але)

A2 Складносурядні речення (і, але) 33 / 58

In short

A compound sentence (складносуря́дне ре́чення) joins two or more equal clauses — neither depends on the other — with a coordinating conjunction. The workhorses at A2 are і (and, adds) and але (but, contrasts), plus а (and / whereas, compares) and або (or, offers a choice). The one habit to build now is punctuation: put a comma before а and але every time, and before і when it links two full clauses.

The rule

Coordinating conjunctions (сполу́чники суря́дності) connect clauses of equal rank. Each clause keeps its own subject and predicate and could stand alone as a sentence:

  • і / й — connective: adds a second fact or a next event. Use й after a vowel and і after a consonant (euphony).
  • а — adversative/comparative: sets two parallel facts side by side (English and in the sense of whereas).
  • але — adversative: signals a real obstacle or contradiction (English but).
  • та — mostly and (a bookish twin of і); sometimes but.
  • або — disjunctive: offers a choice (or). Ask for that choice instead of stating it and або becomes чи: Ти ли́шишся чи пі́деш?

Punctuation — the core A2 skill:

  • Always put a comma before а, але, та, або when they join two clauses — but a single чи between the halves of one question takes none.
  • Put a comma before і when it joins two clauses that each have their own subject: Іде́ дощ, і ста́ло хо́лодно.
  • Put no comma when і just links two verbs of the same subject — that is one simple sentence with homogeneous predicates, not a compound one: Я встав і відчини́в вікно́.

Forms & patterns

Common mistakes

  • Я читаю книжку і брат дивиться телевізор. -> Я чита́ю кни́жку, і брат ди́виться телеві́зор. — two clauses, each with its own subject, need a comma before і.
  • Погода була гарна але ми залишилися вдома. -> Пого́да була́ га́рна, але ми залиши́лися вдо́ма. — there is always a comma before але.
  • Я люблю чай, але брат любить каву. -> Я люблю́ чай, а брат лю́бить ка́ву. — comparing two parallel facts uses а (whereas); але would wrongly signal an obstacle.
  • Я хочу піти, і не можу. -> Я хо́чу піти́, але не мо́жу. — a contradiction (“want… but can’t”) is але, not і.
  • Було пізно, но ми пішли. -> Було́ пі́зно, але ми пішли́. — Ukrainian has no «но»; for but use але (or та / проте).
  • Сонце світить й пташки співають. -> Со́нце сві́тить, і пташки́ співа́ють. — use і after a consonant (світить); й goes after a vowel.

Tips

  • Coordinating conjunctions join clauses of equal rank; if one clause answers why / when / which about the other, you need a subordinate clause instead, not і/але.
  • Comma test for і: two subjects → comma; one subject with і linking two verbs → no comma (that is not a compound sentence).
  • Always place a comma before а, але, та, або between clauses — no exceptions to memorise at A2.
  • Pick by meaning: і to add, а to compare parallel facts (whereas), але to flag an obstacle, або to offer a choice, чи to ask for one.
  • Choose й after a vowel and і after a consonant — it keeps speech smooth (euphony).
  • Forget Russian «но»: Ukrainian says але (or проте / однак for a stronger however).
  • Word order inside each clause stays free; the conjunction simply sits between the two clauses.
