Ordinal numerals

In short
Ordinal numerals name a position in a sequence — first, second, third — and answer the question «котри́й?» (“which one in order?”), as opposed to cardinals, which answer «скі́льки?» (“how many?”). In Ukrainian every ordinal is grammatically an adjective: пе́рший, дру́гий, тре́тій… take adjective endings and must agree with their noun in gender, number and case. This one fact — decline them like adjectives — carries the whole topic, and it is also how Ukrainian says dates and clock hours.
The rule
- They are adjectives. пе́рший behaves exactly like the hard-stem adjective до́брий; тре́тій is the only soft-stem ordinal and behaves like си́ній. So they inflect for gender (пе́рший / пе́рша / пе́рше), number (пе́рші) and all seven cases (the vocative repeats the nominative, as it does for до́брий and си́ній in lesson 22).
- Agreement. The ordinal copies the gender, number and case of the noun it modifies: дру́гий по́верх (nom. m.), на дру́гому по́версі (loc. m.), дру́га спро́ба (nom. f.), з дру́гої спро́би (gen. f.).
- Compound ordinals: only the LAST word is ordinal, all earlier parts stay cardinal and do not decline. So 21st = два́дцять пе́рший (cardinal два́дцять + ordinal пе́рший), 125th = сто два́дцять п’я́тий. Compare cardinal два́дцять оди́н (“twenty-one”).
- Dates. The day is a neuter ordinal, the month goes in the genitive: Сього́дні пе́рше тра́вня (“Today is the first of May”). To say on a date, shift the ordinal to the genitive: пе́ршого тра́вня (“on the first of May”). The year is a locative ordinal (last word only): у дві ти́сячі два́дцять шо́стому ро́ці (“in 2026”).
- Clock hours use a feminine ordinal in the locative after о(б): о пе́ршій, о дру́гій, о деся́тій (годи́ні) — “at one / two / ten o’clock”.
- Rank. With result or place, Ukrainian often uses the instrumental: він фіні́шував во́сьмим (“he finished eighth”), вона́ ста́ла пе́ршою (“she became first”).
Forms & patterns
Most ordinals are hard-stem adjectives. The full paradigm of пе́рший:
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nom. | пе́рший | пе́рша | пе́рше | пе́рші |
| Gen. | пе́ршого | пе́ршої | пе́ршого | пе́рших |
| Dat. | пе́ршому | пе́ршій | пе́ршому | пе́ршим |
| Acc. | пе́рший / пе́ршого* | пе́ршу | пе́рше | пе́рші / пе́рших* |
| Instr. | пе́ршим | пе́ршою | пе́ршим | пе́ршими |
| Loc. | (на) пе́ршому / пе́ршім | (на) пе́ршій | (на) пе́ршому | (на) пе́рших |
* animate accusative copies the genitive.
тре́тій is the sole soft-stem ordinal — note ь and the vowels -є/-і:
| Case | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nom. | тре́тій | тре́тя | тре́тє | тре́ті |
| Gen. | тре́тього | тре́тьої | тре́тього | тре́тіх |
| Dat. | тре́тьому | тре́тій | тре́тьому | тре́тім |
| Acc. | тре́тій / тре́тього* | тре́тю | тре́тє | тре́ті / тре́тіх* |
| Instr. | тре́тім | тре́тьою | тре́тім | тре́тіми |
| Loc. | (на) тре́тьому / тре́тім | (на) тре́тій | (на) тре́тьому | (на) тре́тіх |
The lemmas 1–12, plus 20 and 100 (nominative masculine):
| # | Ordinal | # | Ordinal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | пе́рший | 8 | во́сьмий |
| 2 | дру́гий | 9 | дев’я́тий |
| 3 | тре́тій | 10 | деся́тий |
| 4 | четве́ртий | 11 | одина́дцятий |
| 5 | п’я́тий | 12 | двана́дцятий |
| 6 | шо́стий | 20 | двадця́тий |
| 7 | сьо́мий | 100 | со́тий |
Everything above 12 is derived: add -ий to the cardinal, first dropping a final ь or -о if it has one — трина́дцять -> трина́дцятий, сімна́дцять -> сімна́дцятий, п’ятдеся́т -> п’ятдеся́тий, дев’яно́сто -> дев’яно́стий; the teens keep the cardinal’s stress, but 20 and 30 shift it (два́дцять -> двадця́тий, три́дцять -> тридця́тий). Between 13 and 100 only two break the pattern: соро́к -> сороко́вий and сто -> со́тий.

Common mistakes
- два́дцять оди́н ли́пня -> два́дцять пе́рше ли́пня — a date takes the (neuter) ordinal, never the cardinal.
- двадця́тий пе́рший -> два́дцять пе́рший — in a compound ordinal only the LAST word is ordinal; the earlier parts stay cardinal.
- на дру́гий по́версі -> на дру́гому по́версі — the ordinal must agree in case (locative) with its noun.
- тре́того / тре́тому -> тре́тього / тре́тьому — тре́тій is soft-stem, so its endings carry ь: -ього, -ьому.
- пе́рший ли́пня (“on July 1st”) -> пе́ршого ли́пня — “on a date” needs the genitive of the ordinal.
- второ́й по́верх / пе́рвий день -> дру́гий по́верх / пе́рший день — use the Ukrainian ordinal, not the Russian look-alike.
Tips
- Ordinals answer «котри́й?»; cardinals answer «скі́льки?». If English has -th / -st / -nd, you need an ordinal.
- They decline exactly like adjectives — make them agree in gender, number and case with the noun, the same agreement as in Adjective declension & agreement.
- Only третій is soft-stem (тре́тього, тре́тьому, тре́тя, тре́тє, тре́ті); everything else is hard-stem like до́брий.
- Dates in three moves: neuter ordinal for the day, genitive for the month, and switch the ordinal to the genitive for “on that day”: пе́рше тра́вня -> пе́ршого тра́вня.
- In compounds, make ordinal and decline only the final word: сто два́дцять п’я́тий, сто два́дцять п’я́того.
- Clock hours are feminine locative ordinals after о: о пе́ршій, о дру́гій, о деся́тій.
- Mind the spellings: во́сьмий and сьо́мий have ь; п’я́тий and дев’я́тий keep the apostrophe.
