Prepositions (case government)

A2 Прийменники (керування відмінками) 23 / 58

In short

Every Ukrainian preposition demands a particular case from the noun that follows it — this is called case government. Some prepositions always take the same case (біля + genitive), while the spatial ones switch case depending on whether you mean location (де? — where?) or motion (куди? — where to?). This lesson pulls the whole case block together: once you know which case each preposition governs, you already know most of the endings.

The rule

A preposition never stands alone: it forces its noun (and any adjective agreeing with it) into a fixed case. Learn the preposition and its case as one unit.

Fixed-case prepositions. Some govern only one case:

  • біля, коло, поблизу (near) + genitive: біля вікна́.
  • над, перед, за (above / in front of / behind, as a static position) + instrumental: над столо́м.
  • о / об (at, with clock time) + locative: о шо́стій.

Two-case (spatial) prepositions. в/у, на, під answer two different questions with two different cases:

  • де? (location) → locative after в/у, на; instrumental after під: у кімна́ті, на столі́, під столо́м.
  • куди? (motion toward) → accusative: у кімна́ту, на стіл, під стіл.

Note on в vs у. These are the same preposition with the same government; the choice between в and у is pure euphony (see the euphony lesson) — it never changes the case.

Time and date. Ukrainian sorts time words by unit:

  • days of the week → в/у + accusative: у понеді́лок, у се́реду.
  • months and years → у + locative: у сі́чні, у 2025 ро́ці.
  • weeks → на + locative: на цьо́му ти́жні.
  • clock hours → о (об before a vowel) + locative: о дев’я́тій годи́ні, об одина́дцятій годи́ні.

To ask and tell the time, use the feminine ordinal: Котра́ годи́на? (“Which hour is it?”) is answered in the nominative (тре́тя), while “at what time” uses the locative: о котрі́й? — о тре́тій.

Common mistakes

  • Я йду в шко́лі -> Я йду в шко́лу — motion (куди?) takes the accusative, not the locative.
  • в сі́чень -> у сі́чні — months answer коли? with в/у + locative, not accusative.
  • в шо́сту годи́ну -> о шо́стій годи́ні — clock time uses о + locative (о котрі́й?).
  • біля вікно́ -> біля вікна́ — біля always governs the genitive.
  • над стіл -> над столо́м — над names a static position, so it needs the instrumental.
  • у цей ти́ждень -> на цьо́му ти́жні — “this week” takes на + locative, not в/у + accusative.

Tips

  • Bind each preposition to its case as a single chunk: “біля + genitive”, “під + instrumental”. Memorising them apart is what causes errors.
  • For the spatial trio (в/у, на, під) ask де? or куди? first: location keeps the “resting” case, motion switches to the accusative.
  • в and у are the same word — pick whichever sounds smoother; it never affects the case. See the euphony lesson.
  • Time units each have their own pattern: days = accusative (у вівто́рок), months/years = locative (у бе́резні, у 2025 ро́ці), weeks = на + locative (на цьо́му ти́жні).
  • Clock hours use о + feminine ordinal in the locative; switch о to об before a vowel (об одина́дцятій).
  • Beware Russian look-alikes: it is під, not под — Ukrainian keeps і where Russian has о.
