Locative case

A2 Місцевий відмінок 20 / 58

In short

The locative (Місцевий відмінок) is the case of place and topic: it tells you where something is, or what a statement is about. Its one defining habit is that it never stands alone — it always follows a preposition. Because of that, this is the natural place to meet the core spatial prepositions в/у (in), на (on, at), при (by, attached to) and по (around; after). Its default ending is -і, and it answers the questions (на/у) ко́му? / (на/у) чо́му? — “on/in whom?”, “on/in what?”.

The rule

  • A bound case. Unlike the nominative or accusative, the locative can never appear without a preposition in front of it. If you form a locative and there is no в, на, при, по (or о/об for clock time) before it, the phrase is broken.
  • Core meaning: static location. в/у for being inside something, на for being on a surface or at an open place or event: у кімна́ті (in the room), на столі́ (on the table), на робо́ті (at work).
  • Location vs. direction. The same prepositions в/на take the accusative for motion towards a goal and the locative for being there. Ask куди́? “where to?” (accusative) vs. де? “where?” (locative): йти в шко́лу (going to school, acc.) but бу́ти в шко́лі (being at school, loc.).
  • в or у is a matter of euphony (sound flow), not meaning — both mean “in”; pick the one that reads smoothly (see Euphony: у/в, і/й, з/зі/із).
  • Topic and time too. The locative also expresses the field you are versed in (розумі́тися на му́зиці — to know about music), clock time with о/об (о сьо́мій), months (у сі́чні), and “after” with по (по обі́ді).

Forms & patterns

Singular. The default ending is -і. Watch the consonant swaps it triggers on the stem — г→з, к→ц, х→с — and note that masculine animates often take -ові/-еві, masculine stems in -к/-г/-х often take -у, and feminine nouns in -ія take -ії.

Common mistakes

  • Я в Украї́на. -> Я в Украї́ні. — after в/у the noun must take the locative ending (-і), never stay in the nominative.
  • Я йду в шко́лі. -> Я йду в шко́лу. — motion towards a goal is accusative (в шко́лу); в шко́лі (locative) means being at school.
  • у кни́ги (“in the book”) -> у кни́зі — the feminine stem in -га softens to -зі (г → з) before the locative -і.
  • на робо́та -> на робо́ті — “at work” needs the locative на робо́ті, not the base form.
  • Ми живемо́ Ки́єві. -> Ми живемо́ в Ки́єві. — the locative can never appear without a preposition, so в is obligatory.
  • на руки́ (“on the hand”) -> на руці́ — remember к → ц before -і (the stress stays on the ending).

Tips

  • The locative is the only case that is never bare: if you see an -і/-у/-ах form with no в, на, при, по or о in front of it, a preposition is missing.
  • The default ending is -і; drill the three stem swaps that come with it — г→з, к→ц, х→с (кни́га→у кни́зі, рука́→на руці́, ву́хо→у ву́сі).
  • в vs. у carries no meaning — it is pure euphony; choose whichever flows better with the surrounding sounds (see lesson 3).
  • One preposition, two cases: на/в + locative = where you are; на/в + accusative = where you are going. Test with де? (locative) vs. куди́? (accusative).
  • Clock time uses о (об before a vowel) + locative: о пе́ршій, о во́сьмій годи́ні, об одина́дцятій.
  • The locative also covers months and “after”: у сі́чні (in January), по обі́ді (after lunch).
  • при means “attached to / in the presence of”: при шко́лі (attached to the school), при мені́ (in my presence).
