Verbs: infinitive, present tense & conjugation
A1 Глагол: инфинитив, настоящее время и спряжение 7 / 50
In short
The dictionary form (infinitive) ends in -ть / -ти / -чь (чита́ть, идти́, мочь). Russian has only ONE present tense, and only imperfective verbs use it. To conjugate, drop the ending and add personal endings of the first conjugation (-е-/-ё-: -ю -ешь -ет -ем -ете -ют) or the second conjugation (-и-: -ю -ишь -ит -им -ите -ат/-ят). The verb agrees with the subject in person and number - never in gender.
The rule
1. The infinitive. The dictionary form names the action without a subject. It ends in:
| Ending | Examples | English |
|---|---|---|
| -ть (most verbs) | чита́ть, говори́ть, рабо́тать | to read, to speak, to work |
| -ти | идти́, нести́ | to go, to carry |
| -чь | мочь, помо́чь | to be able, to help |
2. One present tense. There is a single present tense, used both for “I read” and “I am reading.” Only imperfective verbs have it; perfective verbs have no present (their similar-looking forms mean the future - see lesson 21).
3. Two conjugations. To put a verb in the present, drop the infinitive ending and add personal endings - some stems change first (see Forms & patterns). Which set you use depends on the conjugation:
| 1st conjugation (-е-/-ё-) | 2nd conjugation (-и-) | |
|---|---|---|
| я | -ю / -у | -ю / -у |
| ты | -ешь / -ёшь | -ишь |
| он / она́ / оно́ | -ет / -ёт | -ит |
| мы | -ем / -ём | -им |
| вы | -ете / -ёте | -ите |
| они́ | -ют / -ут | -ат / -ят |
Quick rule of thumb: infinitives in -ить are usually 2nd conjugation; most other infinitives are 1st - apart from a short list in -еть / -ать / -ять that is 2nd conjugation as well: смотре́ть, ви́деть, слы́шать, держа́ть, сиде́ть, стоя́ть, спать (я смотрю́, ты смо́тришь, они́ смо́трят). Their infinitive gives no clue, so learn them as a set.
4. Agreement. The verb changes for person (я / ты / он…) and number (singular / plural). In the present there is no gender: он чита́ет and она́ чита́ет are identical.
Forms & patterns
First conjugation - чита́ть (to read), жить (to live):
| Лицо / Person | чита́ть | жить |
|---|---|---|
| я | чита́ю | живу́ |
| ты | чита́ешь | живёшь |
| он / она́ | чита́ет | живёт |
| мы | чита́ем | живём |
| вы | чита́ете | живёте |
| они́ | чита́ют | живу́т |
Second conjugation - говори́ть (to speak), люби́ть (to love):
| Лицо / Person | говори́ть | люби́ть |
|---|---|---|
| я | говорю́ | люблю́ |
| ты | говори́шь | лю́бишь |
| он / она́ | говори́т | лю́бит |
| мы | говори́м | лю́бим |
| вы | говори́те | лю́бите |
| они́ | говоря́т | лю́бят |
Stem changes. Many verbs change the final stem consonant, insert -л-, or swap the suffix -ова-/-ева- for -у-/-ю-. With most 2nd-conjugation verbs the change is only in the я-form:
| Infinitive | Change | я-form | ты-form |
|---|---|---|---|
| писа́ть (write) | с → ш (all forms) | пишу́ | пи́шешь |
| люби́ть (love) | inserted -л- (я only) | люблю́ | лю́бишь |
| ходи́ть (walk) | д → ж (я only) | хожу́ | хо́дишь |
| рисова́ть (draw) | -ова- → -у- (all forms) | рису́ю | рису́ешь |
Verbs in -чь. These are 1st conjugation, and their stem consonant alternates the other way round: the я- and они́-forms keep г / к, the four forms in between take ж / ч - мочь: могу́, мо́жешь, мо́жет, мо́жем, мо́жете, мо́гут; печь: пеку́, печёшь, печёт, печём, печёте, пеку́т (so too бере́чь → берегу́, бережёшь, берегу́т; течь → течёт).
Irregular / разноспрягаемые verbs. A few common verbs mix the two patterns:
| Лицо / Person | хоте́ть (want) | есть (eat) |
|---|---|---|
| я | хочу́ | ем |
| ты | хо́чешь | ешь |
| он / она́ | хо́чет | ест |
| мы | хоти́м | еди́м |
| вы | хоти́те | еди́те |
| они́ | хотя́т | едя́т |
Note хоте́ть: the singular looks like the 1st conjugation (хо́чешь, хо́чет), the plural like the 2nd (хоти́м, хотя́т). The verb быть (to be) has no ordinary present - in the present it is simply left out (lesson 2). The verb дать (to give) is perfective, so its forms (я дам, ты дашь…) mean the future, not the present. Its imperfective partner дава́ть does have a present, and it drops -ва-: я даю́, ты даёшь, они́ даю́т - likewise встава́ть (я встаю́) and преподава́ть (она́ преподаёт).
Examples
| Русский | English |
|---|---|
| Я чита́ю интере́сную кни́гу. | I’m reading an interesting book. |
| Ты хорошо́ говори́шь по-ру́сски. | You speak Russian well. |
| Он живёт в Москве́. | He lives in Moscow. |
| Мы рабо́таем ка́ждый день. | We work every day. |
| Что вы де́лаете ве́чером? | What are you doing in the evening? |
| Они́ лю́бят ру́сский ко́фе. | They love Russian coffee. |
| Сейча́с я пишу́ письмо́. | Right now I’m writing a letter. |
| Ты хо́чешь чай и́ли ко́фе? | Do you want tea or coffee? |
Common mistakes
- Я есть рабо́таю -> Я рабо́таю - no “to be” is added in the present (lesson 2).
- Она́ чита́ла (meaning “she reads”) -> она́ чита́ет - the present has no gender; чита́ла is past tense.
- Он говори́ет -> он говори́т - 2nd-conjugation verbs take -ит, not -ет.
- Я писа́ю -> я пишу́ - the stem consonant mutates (с → ш) in писа́ть.
- Мы хочи́м / они́ хочу́т -> мы хоти́м / они́ хотя́т - in the plural хоте́ть follows the 2nd conjugation.
Tips
- To choose the conjugation, look at the infinitive: -ить usually means 2nd conjugation; almost everything else is 1st, except the short -еть / -ать / -ять list in the rule. When in doubt, memorize the он and они́ forms together.
- Spelling rule: after ж, ш, ч, щ never write -ю/-я - use -у/-а instead (пишу́, они́ пи́шут; учу́, они́ у́чат).
- Mutation and the inserted -л- in 2nd-conjugation verbs appear only in the я-form (люблю́ → but лю́бишь, лю́бит…), so learn that one form separately.
- One present form covers both English tenses: чита́ю = “I read” and “I am reading.”
