Textual connectors and discourse markers

B2 Conectores textuais e marcadores discursivos 52 / 55

In short

By B2 your individual sentences are correct, but they may still read as a list. Connectors (conectores) are the words that weld ideas into a paragraph - marking addition, contrast, cause, consequence and conclusion - while discourse markers (marcadores discursivos) manage the flow of speech: opening, sequencing, reformulating and softening. The two things to get right are register (a marker that fits a chat, like pronto or se calhar, ruins an essay) and the false friends (eventualmente, entretanto, atualmente) that mean something other than they look.

The rule

Connectors grouped by what they do

Learn them by function, not alphabetically:

  • Addition: além disso (besides), também, ainda por cima (on top of that), não só… mas também.
  • Contrast / concession: mas, porém, contudo, no entanto, todavia (all “however”); apesar de + infinitive/noun (despite); embora / ainda que + subjunctive (although - see Lesson 36).
  • Cause: porque, pois, visto que, dado que, uma vez que, já que, como (when it opens the sentence).
  • Consequence: por isso, portanto, logo, assim, por conseguinte, consequentemente.
  • Purpose: para + infinitive, para que / a fim de que + subjunctive.
  • Reformulation / conclusion: ou seja, isto é (that is), em suma, em resumo, enfim (in short).
  • Exemplification: por exemplo, nomeadamente (namely), tal como.
  • Sequencing: primeiro, em seguida, depois, por fim, finalmente.

Register: written connectors vs spoken markers

The same logical link has a formal and an informal wardrobe:

  • Formal / written: contudo, todavia, não obstante, por conseguinte, com efeito, ademais.
  • Neutral: mas, porém, no entanto, por isso, além disso, ou seja.
  • Spoken discourse markers: bem, então, pronto (right / OK, wrapping something up), quer dizer (I mean), lá está (that’s just it), se calhar (maybe), pois / pois é (agreement). Several of these - pronto, lá está, se calhar - are markedly European.

Keep the two apart: pronto and se calhar do not belong in a report, and não obstante does not belong in a coffee-break conversation.

Position and punctuation

  • A connector that opens a sentence normally takes a following comma: No entanto, o preço subiu.
  • The same connector can slot between commas after the subject: O preço, no entanto, subiu.
  • Causal pois follows the clause it explains: Fica em casa, pois está a chover (not fronted).
  • mas joins clauses inside a sentence; in careful writing, start a new sentence with Porém or Contudo rather than Mas.

Common mistakes

  • Eventualmente for English “eventually” -> in Portuguese eventualmente means “possibly / occasionally”; say acabar por or mais tarde for “eventually”.
  • Apesar de que está cansado -> Apesar de estar cansado or Embora esteja cansado - apesar de takes an infinitive or noun, not a que-clause.
  • Entretanto to mean “however” -> in EP entretanto mainly means “meanwhile”; for “however” use no entanto or contudo.
  • Atualmente for English “actually” -> atualmente means “currently”; for “actually” use na verdade or na realidade.
  • Starting every contrast with mas -> in writing, vary with porém, contudo, no entanto; a chain of mas reads as childish.
  • No entanto o preço subiu -> No entanto, o preço subiu - a fronted connector takes a comma after it.
  • Pois está a chover, fica em casa -> Fica em casa, pois está a chover - causal pois comes after the clause it justifies, never at the front.

Tips

  • Match the register: contudo, todavia, por conseguinte for formal writing; mas, por isso, então for everyday speech; never drop pronto or se calhar into an essay.
  • Own a few markedly European markers for conversation: pronto (right, that’s that), lá está (that’s exactly it), se calhar (maybe), pois é (yeah, true).
  • Concession, purpose and condition connectors (embora, para que, a não ser que) pull the subjunctive (Lesson 36); addition, cause and consequence connectors (além disso, porque, por isso) take the indicative.
  • Punctuate connectors: a fronted one takes a comma after it, and a mid-sentence one sits between two commas.
  • Watch the false friends: eventualmente (possibly), entretanto (meanwhile), atualmente (currently) - none mean what they look like.
  • In Brazil: everyday speech leans on aí and daí to sequence events and on tipo as a filler, where EP prefers então, depois and pronto; EP’s colloquial se calhar is not used there - Brazilians say talvez, which is also the neutral, written choice in EP.
