Irregular verbs
B2 Czasowniki nieregularne 50 / 52
In short
Polish has far fewer truly “irregular” verbs than English, but a handful of very common ones refuse to follow the tidy conjugation groups from Lesson 5. Some rebuild their stem in the present (brać -> biorę), some have an unpredictable 3rd-person plural (dać -> dadzą), and a few switch to a completely different stem in the past tense (iść -> szedł). Because these verbs are among the most frequent words in the language, memorising their principal parts is more useful than any rule.
The rule
A Polish verb is “irregular” when you cannot reliably predict all its forms from the infinitive. In practice this shows up in three places.
1. The present stem is reshaped
Many high-frequency verbs keep a regular set of endings but alter the stem vowel or consonant, sometimes differently in the 1sg/3pl than in the middle of the paradigm. The classic case is the o / e alternation in brać (biorę / bierzesz) and prać (piorę / pierzesz), or the vowel swap in jechać (jadę / jedziesz).
2. The 1sg and 3pl are unpredictable
A small closed set of athematic verbs - być, jeść, wiedzieć, dać and relatives - takes the archaic 1sg ending -m and a special 3pl in -dzą / -są: jem … jedzą, wiem … wiedzą, dam … dadzą, są. mieć shares the -m of the 1sg (mam) but keeps a regular 3pl mają. Nothing in the infinitive warns you about the -dzą plural, so learn it as a fact.
3. The past tense uses a different stem (suppletion)
The most genuinely irregular verbs change stem between present and past. iść “to go” has present idę but past szedł / szła; móc “can” has mogę but mógł / mogła; -ąć verbs like wziąć show the ą / ę nasal alternation in the past (wziął / wzięła). Remember from Lesson 21 that the past-tense personal ending is mobile - it can slide onto an earlier word (ja szedłem = jam szedł).
The most suppletive verb of the language is być: present jest, future będzie, past był - three different stems, and the present shares nothing with the infinitive.
Forms & patterns
być (to be) - the most suppletive verb (three stems: jest- / będ- / by-):
| Person | Present | Future | Past (m / f) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ja | jestem | będę | byłem / byłam |
| ty | jesteś | będziesz | byłeś / byłaś |
| on/ona/ono | jest | będzie | był / była / było |
| my | jesteśmy | będziemy | byliśmy / byłyśmy |
| wy | jesteście | będziecie | byliście / byłyście |
| oni/one | są | będą | byli / były |
The athematic -m / -dzą group (irregular 1sg in -m and 3pl in -dzą):
| Person | jeść (eat) | wiedzieć (know) | dać (give, pf) | mieć (have) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ja | jem | wiem | dam | mam |
| ty | jesz | wiesz | dasz | masz |
| on/ona/ono | je | wie | da | ma |
| my | jemy | wiemy | damy | mamy |
| wy | jecie | wiecie | dacie | macie |
| oni/one | jedzą | wiedzą | dadzą | mają |
Reshaped present stems (regular endings, alternating stem):
| Person | brać (take) | jechać (ride) | chcieć (want) | móc (can) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ja | biorę | jadę | chcę | mogę |
| ty | bierzesz | jedziesz | chcesz | możesz |
| on/ona/ono | bierze | jedzie | chce | może |
| my | bierzemy | jedziemy | chcemy | możemy |
| wy | bierzecie | jedziecie | chcecie | możecie |
| oni/one | biorą | jadą | chcą | mogą |
iść / wziąć - present (or perfective future) vs. suppletive or nasal past (compare the two stems):
| Person | iść present (go) | iść past (m/f) | wziąć future (take, pf) | wziąć past (m/f) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ja | idę | szedłem / szłam | wezmę | wziąłem / wzięłam |
| ty | idziesz | szedłeś / szłaś | weźmiesz | wziąłeś / wzięłaś |
| on/ona | idzie | szedł / szła | weźmie | wziął / wzięła |
| my | idziemy | szliśmy / szłyśmy | weźmiemy | wzięliśmy / wzięłyśmy |
| wy | idziecie | szliście / szłyście | weźmiecie | wzięliście / wzięłyście |
| oni/one | idą | szli / szły | wezmą | wzięli / wzięły |
Suppletive / stem-changing past tenses (3rd person, all four gender-number forms):
| Infinitive | Present (pf.: future) 1sg | Past m. sg | Past f. sg | Past virile pl | Past non-virile pl |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| iść (go) | idę | szedł | szła | szli | szły |
| móc (can) | mogę | mógł | mogła | mogli | mogły |
| jeść (eat) | jem | jadł | jadła | jedli | jadły |
| znaleźć (find, pf) | znajdę | znalazł | znalazła | znaleźli | znalazły |
| wziąć (take, pf) | wezmę | wziął | wzięła | wzięli | wzięły |
| zacząć (begin, pf) | zacznę | zaczął | zaczęła | zaczęli | zaczęły |

Common mistakes
- ja bierę -> biorę - the 1sg (and 3pl) of brać take the back vowel: biorę, biorą, but bierzesz in between.
- oni dają for “they will give” -> dadzą - dają is the present of imperfective dawać; the perfective dać has 3pl dadzą.
- on idł / on iszedł -> szedł - the past of iść is built on the suppletive stem sz-, not on the present id-.
- ona mógła -> mogła - the ó of mógł appears only in the masculine singular; every other past form has plain o.
- ja wziąłem is right, but ona wziąła -> wzięła - the nasal ą stays only before the hard masc. -ł; elsewhere it softens to ę.
- oni wiedą / oni jedą -> wiedzą / jedzą - these athematic verbs form the 3pl in -dzą, never plain -ą.
- chcę je for “I want to eat” -> chcę jeść - after a modal use the infinitive jeść, not a conjugated form.
Tips
- Learn every irregular verb by its three principal parts: infinitive, 1sg present, and 3sg past (iść - idę - szedł). From those three you can rebuild the whole paradigm.
- The -dzą plural clusters in one tiny family - jeść, wiedzieć, dać and their compounds (zjeść -> zjedzą, sprzedać -> sprzedadzą). Recognise the family and the ending comes for free.
- For -ąć verbs, the past-tense rule is mechanical: ą before the masculine -ł (wziął, zaczął), ę everywhere else (wzięła, wzięli, zaczęło).
- The ó -> o shortening in mógł -> mogła and niósł -> niosła is the same alternation you met in noun declension (stół -> stołu); see Lesson 44.
- być is worth over-learning: its future będę… is also the auxiliary for the whole compound future (Lesson 22), so one irregular verb powers a large chunk of the tense system.
